Ed Barnard's big day out gives Warwickshire win in Bristol

Allrounder takes 3 for 16 in eight overs then hits unbeaten 152 in run chase

Ed Barnard was outstanding with bat and ball as Warwickshire beat Gloucestershire by six wickets at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium to extend their winning start to five matches in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.Having claimed 3 for 16 to help dismiss Gloucestershire for 267 in 49.4 overs, the in-form allrounder posted a brilliant match-winning knock of 152 not out from 134 balls as the Bears chased down their target with 2.1 overs to spare. He dominated stands of 79 and 135 with Hamza Shaikh and Chris Benjamin for the third and fifth wickets respectively and helped himself to two sixes and 14 fours as Warwickshire continued to match joint-leaders Glamorgan blow for blow at the top of Group B.Jack Taylor had earlier done his utmost to make a game of it, Gloucestershire’s skipper scoring a brilliant unbeaten 139 from 115 balls with eight sixes and 10 fours. He shared partnerships of 101 and 54 with Ben Charlesworth and Graeme van Buuren for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively to rescue Gloucestershire from the wreckage of 43 for 4.But Gloucestershire were kept in check by the irrepressible Barnard, who took his wicket tally in the competition to 13, while teenage legspinner Tazeem Ali returned career-best figures of 3 for 55.Now unbeaten in their last five outings in the 50-over competition, Warwickshire can virtually guarantee a place in the quarter-finals by defeating nearest rivals Glamorgan at Edgbaston on Thursday. Beaten in three of their five outings, Gloucestershire will almost certainly have to beat Sussex in their next game at Bristol on Wednesday to keep alive their chances of making the knockout stages.Gloucestershire won the toss and elected to bat, but might well have been regretting that decision after Barnard made early inroads. He found early movement off the pitch to remove Cameron Bancroft without scoring and account for Ollie Price and James Bracey in single figures. Michael Booth had Miles Hammond caught at the wicket for 15 as Gloucestershire were reduced to 43 for 4.Relieved to finally see the back of Barnard, Charlesworth and Taylor launched a recovery, staging an unbroken stand of 50 from 65 balls and forcing Will Rhodes, who conceded 22 runs in three overs, out of the attack. Pulling and driving with refreshing freedom, Charlesworth was first to 50, attaining that landmark via 68 balls with his first six, lofted over long-off at the expense of Tazeem.Tazeem had his revenge when Charlesworth, who had accrued six fours and a six, holed out to midwicket with the score on 144 for 5 in the 31st over. Warwickshire’s three spinners sent down 22 overs between them, Tazeem, Jake Lintott and Rob Yates conceding a combined total of 116 runs.Tazeem had some success, having van Buuren held on the long-off boundary, but only after he had contributed 18 in a crucial stand of 54 for the sixth wicket with Taylor. Warwickshire’s 18-year-old legspinner also sent back Tom Smith, but the visitors were unable to take the prized wicket of Taylor.Gloucestershire’s captain certainly exacted a heavy price, going to his first hundred of the season from 101 balls, and then orchestrating a late flurry that saw the home side plunder 52 runs in 3.4 overs at the death. Taylor’s onslaught reached a climax when he smashed former team-mate Craig Miles for three successive sixes in the penultimate over.Mindful that Warwickshire had chased 328 to defeat Essex at Chelmsford last month, Gloucestershire were aware of the importance of taking early wickets. Matt Taylor obliged, persuading Yates to hole out to midwicket for 16, while Josh Shaw had Rhodes caught at the wicket without scoring as the visitors slipped to 46 for 2.But Barnard and Shaikh provided much-needed reassurance. Having already posted a career-best knock of 173 in this competition this season, Barnard went to his latest 50 from 52 balls, finding the boundary with sufficient regularity to keep the required rate below six an over.Appointed captain of the England Under-19 side in June, Shaikh is enjoying a breakthrough season, and he further enhanced his burgeoning reputation here, making 37 in a stand of 79 for the third wicket. Content to play second fiddle to Barnard, the 18-year-old demonstrated his quality on occasions, caressing van Buuren’s slow left-arm over square leg for six before slicing the same bowler high to cover and departing in the 25th over.Price then bowled the reverse-sweeping Michael Burgess, at which point the visitors were 136 for 4, requiring a further 132 runs from 22.2 overs. But they were unable to unseat Burgess, whose serene progress saw him go to three figures from 99 balls. He found a willing ally in Benjamin, these two making 50 from 56 balls to keep the chase on track. Playing within himself, Benjamin rotated the strike beautifully in making a valuable 45 not out from 59 balls, while Barnard displayed impressive concentration to see the job through, carrying his bat for a second time in five innings to break Gloucestershire resolve.

Alexa Stonehouse four-for powers Stars to a home semi-final

Diamonds fold with little fight in disappointing dead-rubber display

New-ball seamer Alexa Stonehouse returned a career-best four for 27 to help South East Stars clinch a home semi-final in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy as they crushed already confirmed group stage winners Northern Diamonds by 156 runs at Durham.A season’s best run-a-ball 79 from Alice Davidson-Richards anchored the Stars’ imposing 275 for eight in a final round group clash between first and second in the table at the Seat Unique Riverside before left-armer Stonehouse’s opening seven-over burst was key in bowling the Diamonds out for 119 inside 37 overs. The Diamonds disappointed in what was essentially a dead-rubber fixture for them. They failed to match the intensity of the Stars, for whom all-rounder Emma Jones also impressed with a career best 47.Both regions, who finished with nine wins from 14 games, will find out next Saturday’s semi-final opponents later today.Having elected to bowl following a half-hour delay because of morning mist, the Diamonds failed to utilise helpful conditions despite an encouraging start.Left-arm seamer Rachel Slater struck with the new ball when she had Stonehouse caught at mid-on before Abi Glen’s seam accounted for the other opener, Chloe Hill, for 25 as the score fell to 53 for two in the 12th over. The Hill wicket owed much to a sharp midwicket catch by Australian Erin Burns, who also claimed two wickets caught and bowled with her off-spinners.From there, the Stars asserted their authority in overcast conditions.Phoebe Franklin scorched a couple of cover driven boundaries off seam and hoisted Katie Levick for six over long-off in a useful 32 before being bowled by Phoebe Turner, who also trapped captain Kira Chathli lbw – 123 for four in the 24th.A 50-stand between Aylish Cranstone and Davidson-Richards gave the Stars a platform heading into the final 20 overs, and the visitors were helped by a combination of sloppy ground fielding and some loose bowling.Burns caught well, though, and took a skied return catch to remove Cranstone for 28.Davidson-Richards, a former Yorkshire Diamond, hit nicely in the V en-route to a 56-ball fifty and became increasingly adventurous.Towards the end of her 64-stand with sixth-wicket partner Jones, she pulled Beth Langston over deep midwicket for six but skied the same bowler to mid-on next ball – 237 for six in the 44th.Jones drove well before falling just short of a maiden senior fifty, drilling another return catch to Burns in the penultimate over. Then came the game’s defining period as Diamonds slipped to an unrepairable 30 for five inside seven overs of their chase, played out in bright sunshine. That collapse was sparked by Tilly Corteen-Coleman taking the new ball with her left-arm spinners and getting linchpin opener Lauren Winfield-Hill caught at short midwicket for two.Rebecca Duckworth was then lbw to 19-year-old Stonehouse, who had opener Emma Marlow caught at square-leg and Langston lbw. The latter two came in the space of three balls in the 10th over.Franklin’s seam bowled Sterre Kalis in between.Stars could now start planning for a home semi-final, while the Diamonds were contemplating a fourth defeat in 14 games.Stonehouse had Burns caught behind added to two wickets in an over for off-spinner Kalea Moore.Unbeaten Turner resisted for a career best 49 as Stonehouse returned to complete her 10-over allocation. But spinners Dani Gregory and Moore – three for 10 from 6.1 overs – wrapped up the Stars’ victory.

West Ham make contact to sign £300k-p/w ace who's scored at London Stadium

In a move that would instantly replace Mohammed Kudus, West Ham United are now reportedly in contact to sign a Premier League-winning attacker who Graham Potter wants at the London Stadium.

Potter "very pleased" to sign Diouf

It may have taken the sale of Kudus to Tottenham Hotspur for them to get going on the transfer front, but get going West Ham have. The Hammers announced the arrival of El Hadji Malick Diouf to welcome their first big signing of the summer and Potter instantly expressed his delight.

Now that they’ve got going with their spending, West Ham may not stop there. Reports are now indicating that those at the London Stadium have made their first move to sign the £300,000-a-week attacker on loan.

West Ham make contact to sign Grealish

According to The Boot Room’s Graeme Bailey, West Ham have now made their first approach to sign Jack Grealish, who has been shown the door at Manchester City this summer. Potter is reportedly a fan of the £300,000-a-week international and the Hammers could yet welcome his arrival in what would be an excellent addition.

West Ham have experienced Grealish’s quality first-hand more times than they’ll care to admit and the London Stadium even saw him find the back of the net for Man City in a frantic 2-2 in the 2021/22 campaign.

Although Grealish has struggled in the last 12 months at Manchester City, he is still very much a player capable of making all the difference when at his best.

Even as he has continued to fall down the pecking order at The Etihad, Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for the West Ham target. The Spaniard previously told reporters last season: “I’m pleased for Jack.

An Enzo Le Fee repeat: Sunderland favourites to sign £26m "warrior"

Sunderland fans who have headed out to watch their side play in Portugal during pre-season were treated to some new faces in action against Sevilla.

From the get-go against their Spanish opponents, Regis Le Bris handed Chemsdine Talbi, Simon Adingra, and Noah Sadiki their Black Cats debuts, as the Wearside outfit put in a good account of themselves to walk away from the runout in the Algarve heat with a respectable 1-1 draw.

Yet, away from all the fanfare surrounding new signings, Enzo Le Fee also showed off his class once more with Sunderland’s only goal of the night when the silky Frenchman capitalised on a Sevilla error at the back.

Le Bris will be hopeful that a number of his fresh signings can go on to be as impactful as Le Fee after arriving from Europe, with another statement deal now potentially on the table.

Sunderland very interested in £26m star

Whilst Sunderland have bolstered their attack with some standout purchases, the time is now approaching when the Black Cats will have to improve their defensive personnel, too, with equally high-profile buys.

Indeed, recent reports have suggested that Le Bris and Co. are going after both Brighton and Hove Albion defender Igor Julio and ex-Aston Villa centre-back Diego Carlos to do just that, alongside also looking at the likes of both Bologna titan Jhon Lucumi and Lille ace Bafodé Diakité from further afield.

Jhon Lucumi slide tackles Tijjani Reijnders.

However, there is a name that hasn’t been mentioned much, but stands out, with the Black Cats reportedly very interested in a £26m deal for Sevilla star Loic Bade, according to a new report by El Chiringuito TV via X.

AFC Bournemouth is also noted as being another interested party, alongside Marseille, Tottenham, and Villarreal, who have allegedly lodged enquiries about the conditions involved in signing the one-time France international.

A separate report from French publication, Foot Mercato, suggests the Cherries and Sunderland are in pole position to sign the centre-back this summer.

This might well be a tough race for Sunderland to win, but the Black Cats should not be underestimated when assessing their whirlwind business so far this summer, on top of the fact that Le Fee decided to call the Stadium of Light his home in a similarly out-there deal last year.

How Bade can be Le Bris' next Le Fee

Before making the unexpected switch, the ex-Lorient midfielder was more used to the luxuries of the top French division than the hustle and bustle of the Championship, with nine Europa League appearances also next to his name.

Still, he managed to instantly settle in as an enigmatic presence from midfield, leading to Le Fee chipping in with two key assists during Sunderland’s playoff journey to help make their surreal promotion dreams a reality.

Bade will hope he can enter the building and be just as impactful, only this time around in the bright lights of the Premier League, having been a consistent battler for Sevilla over many a season now.

In total, the 6-foot-3 “warrior” – as he’s been glowingly labelled in the past by football analyst Ben Mattinson – has 79 La Liga appearances under his belt for Matías Almeyda’s men, with the same level of standout experience also on his side in European competitions, having lined up for three Champions League clashes across his varied career to date, away from also proudly lifting the Europa League in 2023.

While he proudly demonstrates prowess in the air, winning 4.3 aerial duels per game last season in La Liga, which could come in handy for a relegation dog-fight, Bade also possesses a calmness with the ball at his feet that is similar to his compatriot in Le Fee, with a high 86% pass accuracy averaged per top-flight clash across the same period.

The 25-year-old just about did enough at the back to ensure Sevilla beat the drop, as the Rojiblancos finished in a precarious 17th spot, with Bade now tasked with ensuring another lowly side can stave off relegation if he relocates to Sunderland.

Loic Bade for Sevilla.

Hailed as being a potential “great” signing by U23 scout Antonio Mango for a team in need of experience, this might well be a golden deal for Le Bris and Co. to sign off on, with the hope he can look a cut above, much like Le Fee did on his arrival.

Root and Brook hit big centuries to make Pakistan's 556 look inadequate

The third day ended with England only 64 behind Pakistan’s 556 with seven first-innings wickets in hand

Stumps Responding to Pakistan’s mammoth first-innings score of 556 after the best part of two days in the dirt was always going to require something special from England. Not only did they respond emphatically to end day three of this first Test on 492 for 3, trailing by just 64, but they did so in historic fashion.Joe Root became England’s leading Test run-scorer, passing Sir Alastair Cook’s record of 12,473 runs on his way to a 35th Test hundred. It was typical Root, unassuming and busy with just 12 fours, set against Harry Brook’s boisterous 141* from 173 deliveries, picking up where he left off from a Player-of-the-Series performance on the 2022 tour of Pakistan, with his fourth century against them in as many matches. As it happens, this is Root’s first on these shores. And it has come after spending all day at the crease – he was the last England batter to achieve that feat, against Sri Lanka in Galle three years ago – meaning he has been absent for just eight deliveries of the 250 overs of this match so far.Related

Pope succumbs to the chaos as batting questions refuse to abate

Carse takes pride in the grind after claiming maiden Test wickets

Salman, from pressure absorber to pressure transmitter

No wonder he struggled with cramps for the last half of the day. Having come to the crease on Tuesday following the dismissal of stand-in skipper Ollie Pope with just four on the board, resuming on Wednesday with England 96 for 1, he will mark his guard with 176 against his name on Thursday morning with his side holding all the aces. The Yorkshire duo of Root and Brook combined for 243 (and counting), a third successive century stand in the innings after Zak Crawley’s 78 and Ben Duckett’s 84 provided the guts for 109- and 136-run stands for the second and third wickets, respectively. As it has been for most of the last 12 years in English cricket, Root was the glue throughout. Starting day three with 32 to his name, he made the final ascent to the top of the England run-scorers’ pile 15 minutes before lunch when, on 67, he leaned into another compact drive for four to march along to 12,473 career runs, overtaking Cook as England’s most prolific Test batter, and the fifth overall, behind only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.Root was always going to mark the occasion with three figures, especially on a pitch that remains interminably dull, with just two wickets falling all day, and none in the final session. He moved to a crisp 100 with a reverse sweep off his 167th ball for a fifth century in 2024. It was the third time he has struck as many in a calendar year, after 2021 and 2022. Only Ricky Ponting (four) and Matthew Hayden (four) scored five or more Test centuries in more calendar years.Aamer Jamal was by far the most impressive of Pakistan’s bowlers on the day•Getty Images

Root was finding matters so easy that he even took to batting left-handed against legspinner Abrar Ahmed, who was hiding the ball outside leg stump as much to slow the game down as to protect himself. Two years after marking his Test debut with 11 wickets against England at this very ground, he currently nurses grim figures of 0 for 174 from 35 overs. That Root only struck one of his fours off Abrar – a full toss dispatched through midwicket off the opening ball of the 92nd over of the innings – spoke to the punishment meted out by Crawley, Duckett and, latterly, Brook.Indeed Crawley and Duckett should have got three figures themselves. But within the first hour of play, Crawley flicked uppishly across a full-length delivery from Shaheen Shah Afridi and picked out Aamer Jamal at midwicket. Jamal’s second catch of the innings wasn’t a patch on the screamer with which he had dismissed Pope on the second evening, however. The ball looped straight to him, and he all but dropped it before scooping it up at the second attempt.Either way, Crawley was gone for his sixth score between 60 and 80 this year. Duckett strode in at No. 4 and motored on, showing no ill-effects from a thumb injury that prevented him from opening the batting. He had one life on 37, when Naseem Shah found his outside edge only for the ball to bisect keeper and a wide first slip. But with the ball reversing enough for Jamal to trap the left-hand batter on the crease from around the wicket, Duckett was dismissed for the fourth time between 70 and 90 since his third Test hundred back in February, against India in Rajkot.Brook, however, naturally assumed the mantle of aggressor immediately upon his arrival with the score 249 for 3. It was on the previous Pakistan tour that Brook announced himself to the world with 468 runs at 93.60, with centuries in all three Tests. A guided four to third from his second delivery showed he was back to inflict more upon the hosts two years on.Harry Brook continued his love affair with the Pakistan bowlers•Getty Images

Despite a hint of reverse swing on offer – first with Jamal, then Afridi – Brook’s speed out of the blocks could not be tempered. Afridi felt the full force of that when a short delivery was smashed back down the ground like a tennis forehand for the first of consecutive boundaries. Brook made it to his half-century in 49 deliveries, his fifth 50-plus score in six innings against Pakistan.Brook’s next fifty took a little longer – 69 balls – in part because the field was spread, the bowling lines negative, and his own battles with cramp, which meant neither he nor Root could push for singles or fully commit to attacking strokes that required extra stretching. But having consumed plenty of gels and isotonic drinks, he struck Abrar down the ground in the 83rd over for the first six of the innings, which took him to 98. A misfield for two cut to point brought up his sixth career century. He could have been on his way back on 75 when a block off the impressive Jamal – comfortably the pick of the bowlers – ricocheted off his grille and rolled on to his stumps without dislodging the bails. Root, similarly, could have been seen off on 168 had umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised the finger following a strong lbw shout from Naseem, after rare seam movement pinned the batter in front with the second new ball. Shan Masood opted to use Pakistan’s last review to double-check, which was retained after DRS came back with an umpire’s call on the impact into leg stump. It summed up a torturous time for Pakistan, who conceded 4.83 an over across today’s 82 overs, watching on powerlessly as their opening effort was made to feel under par. With a night’s rest for Root and Brook, and Jamie Smith waiting in the wings, a first innings lead of note feels inevitable.

Lukas Nmecha is the only final third arrival, joining on a free transfer at the beginning of the window after leaving Wolfsburg. Leeds were ready to splash the cash on Igor Paixao, however, the Brazilian decided to join Marseille from Feyenoord.

Talking after the 1-1 draw with Villarreal at Elland Road on the weekend, Farke admitted that Leeds “are not ready for Premier League level” in the final third.

Rodrigo Muniz of Fulham has been Leeds’ top centre-forward target, and now, a versatile attacking midfielder is being linked with a move to Yorkshire.

Leeds eyeing Oxlade-Chamberlain on free transfer

According to The Sun, Leeds are a possible destination for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is on course to become a free agent in the coming days.

Currently on the books at Besiktas, the former Arsenal and Liverpool star is set to have his deal terminated by the Turkish side, who will ‘pay his exit fee in full’.

The 31-year-old, capable of playing as a winger earlier in his career, has been playing as a central midfielder in recent years and is looking to return to the Premier League. He was previously a part of a Liverpool team who defeated Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side 3-0 at Elland Road in 2021.

Despite playing in a deeper role, he has been compared to ex-Liverpol attacker Firmino by Football Transfers, boasting a versatile skill-set of pace, trickery, goals and assists from anywhere across the attack or midfield – Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored 60 senior goals for club and country over the years.

A versatile option for Farke, he could be a shrewd pick up by Leeds if his wages are right, potentially challenging Brenden Aaronson in an attacking role or Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Sean Longstaff, Anton Stach and Ao Tanaka in a deeper role.

Smith, 26, made his international debut in the first ODI against Sri Lanka earlier this week. In last season’s Plunket Shield he was the leading wicket-taker with 33 at 17.18 and in September was awarded a central contract. He also took 27 wickets at 21.14 for Worcestershire in last season’s County Championship alongside scoring three half-centuries.Ajaz Patel, who claimed 15 wickets against India, has not been included which means his record of taking all 85 of his Test wickets away from home will remain intact for now.Williamson’s return to fitness could put pressure on Will Young, player of the series in India, to retain his place in the XI.It was announced earlier on Friday that Tim Southee would retire from Test cricket after the England series unless New Zealand make the World Test Championship final. The 3-0 win in India has given them a chance of reaching the final again although even with a whitewash of England would not guarantee it.”It’s obviously a big series for the side in terms of the World Test Championship and to also now be farewelling someone like Tim Southee, only raises it up further,” Sam Wells, the New Zealand selector, said. “Tim has had a fabulous career and will go down as one of the great Black Caps.”I am sure the team and the public will want to give Tim a fitting send-off in what is a highly anticipated series. It’s also an exciting time for Nathan to be brought into the Test squad for the first time. Nathan is an exciting talent with a proven first-class record and I’m sure he will bring a lot of skill and energy to the group.”New Zealand Test squad vs EnglandTom Latham (capt), Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner (Tests 2 and 3), Nathan Smith, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson, Will Young
