Underperforming batters find form after tough seasons to take command against Gloucestershire

It’s been a disappointing season for Sussex County Cricket Club – and their two left-handers, Ali Orr and Tom Clark, have suffered more than most.Orr has missed almost the entire season through injury and though Clark has played he has consistently struggled to find his best form. But against Gloucestershire, on the second day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match, the pair shared a joyous second-wicket stand of 120 to suggest there will be better times ahead.Their partnership formed the foundation stone of a Sussex second-innings score of 256 for three, placing them 263 runs ahead of Gloucestershire with two days remaining.Orr made a quite return to the side at Derby last week, scoring 10 and 12. But here he scored an impressive 67, while Clark, who was Sussex’s best batsman in Derby, with 71 runs for once out, maintained his form with a fine 72, though he will be disappointed not to have gone on to make his first century of the season.Sussex went in to bat a second time 50 minutes before lunch, with a slender first-innings lead of seven runs. Tom Haines – yet another Sussex left-hander who would like to move on from 2023 – fell for four, caught in the gully as he attempted to run the ball down to third man, a soft dismissal. At lunch Sussex were 29 for one, with Orr on 14, from 41 deliveries, and Clark on five, off 18.But after the interval Ali Orr suddenly remembered that he was Ali Orr. He hoisted Zafar Gohar over wide mid-on for six to raise the Sussex fifty. In the next over he struck Ollie Price for a straight six and then cut him for four before pulling a short one from Zafar over midwicket for another four to reach his half-century. He hit Josh Shaw for another six over midwicket before he played on to the same bowler. There were seven fours and four sixes in his knock.There were no sixes for Clark. But there were eleven fours in his measured innings and he scored almost as fluently as Orr, though he became becalmed after the loss of his partner and was then bowled by one that came in from Matt Taylor, who once again bowled impressively after his starring role on the opening day.Tom Alsop dropped anchor for a solid and unbeaten 46 but at the other end James Coles, after a quiet start, outdid both Orr and Clark in terms of strike rate, thumping Zafar for 14 in three balls and reaching his fifty off 39 balls before the players came off for bad light with 15 overs remaining.In the morning, Gloucestershire had batted for another hour, effectively transforming the match into a one-innings affair.Resuming on 136 for six, still 66 runs behind, they initially struggled with the heaving clouds and bad light. They had added just one when, in the second over of the day, Zafar edged Brad Currie to Clark at second slip. And in the following over Clark was again the catcher as Ed Middleton edged Sean Hunt.But then, in an echo of the Sussex first innings, there was a late-order revival. Taylor and Shaw added 54 for the ninth wicket in ten overs before the belated introduction of off-spinner Jack Carson, who wrapped up the innings with two wickets in as many overs.

INÍCIO DE JOGO EQUILIBRADO

Jogando sob seus domínios, o Goiás, logo nos primeiros minutos, foi para cima do Juventude em busca de abrir o placar rapidamente. Entretanto, o rival se mostrou atento aos lances, conseguindo uma boa sequência de finalizações com Yuri Lima e Felipe Pires, porém ambas sem sucesso.

Até meados dos 30 minutos, o panorama em campo era basicamente o mesmo. Com o Verdão conseguindo aparecer em seu campo de ataque, desperdiçou uma boa oportunidade com Pedro Raul, enquanto o Ju, momentos antes com Vitor Gabriel, também não teve êxito em sua tentativa com a defesa da equipe mandante levando a melhor no lance.

PLACAR SEM ALTERAÇÕES NA PRIMEIRA ETAPA

Na insistência de levar uma vantagem mesmo que mínima para os vestiários, o Goiás seguiu martelando. E quase se deu bem. Aos 31 minutos, Lucas Halter acertou a trave para desespero do jogador.

Não conseguindo aproveitar a melhor chance até então, o Verdão viu o adversário se fechar até os últimos momentos, garantindo 0 a 0 parcial.

JUVENTUDE TEM GOL ANULADO

Voltando para a segunda etapa sem alterações, os times, assim como no primeiro tempo, apostavam no ataque. Entretanto, apesar de boas oportunidades criadas dos dois lados, nenhuma foi o suficiente para balançar as redes.

Com a partida se encaminhando para sua reta final, o técnico Jair Ventura promoveu mais algumas trocas, entre elas a entrada de Nicolas no lugar de Marquinhos Gabriel. E o atacante não demorou muito para deixar sua marca. Aos 36 minutos, praticamente em seu primeiro toque na bola, aproveitou cruzamento na medida de Diego e, de cabeça, abriu a contagem na Serrinha.

Em desvantagem na partida, próximo dos acréscimos, o técnico Celso Roth optou por algumas trocas dando chances aos jovens Ruan e Rafinha. Mesmo não conseguindo criar muito, ambos viram Paulo Miranda quase encontrar o empate, mas Tadeu acabou salvando o Goiás no último minuto, dando a deixa para a arbitragem encerrar o duelo em Goiânia.

As Sereias da Vila estrearam na segunda edição da Brasil Ladies Cup com vitória por 5 a 0 no clássico contra o Palmeiras, na tarde desta quarta-feira (9). No Estádio Zezinho Magalhães, em Jaú (SP), os cinco primeiros gols santistas na competição internacional foram marcados por Thaisinha (duas vezes), Cristiane (duas vezes) e Ana Carla.

O próximo compromisso das Sereias da Vila pela competição sediada no interior paulista está marcado para às 21 horas da próxima sexta-feira (11), contra o Internacional (RS). Desta vez, a partida será disputada na Arena Fonte Luminosa, em Araraquara (SP) e mais uma vez, contará com transmissão ao vivo do SporTV.

O jogo

Aos treze minutos, as Sereias da Vila abriram o placar com gol da camisa 10, Thaisinha. Pela linha de fundo, próxima ao escanteio esquerdo, Bia Menezes passou para trás, de onde Fernanda chegava para cruzar para a área. A bola chegou a Jane, no segundo pau e, de cabeça, ela ajeitou para a pequena área, de onde Thaisinha só teve o trabalho de completar para as redes.

Pouco depois, aos 19, as Sereias chegaram novamente com perigo, desta vez pela direita. Gi Fernandes recebeu lançamento e levou a bola até a linha de fundo. Com cruzamento para trás, ela encontrou Brena na entrada da área. Sem força, a capitã do Peixe finalizou rasteiro, para defesa segura de Jully.

Com 24 minutos, as Sereias tiveram falta perigosa para cobrar pela direita da entrada da grande área. Cristiane foi para a bola e arriscou batida colocada, mas mandou sobre o travessão, em tiro de meta.

Dois minutos depois, foi a vez de Fernanda ter falta para cobrar, dessa vez pela meia lua da grande área adversária. Com chute muito forte, ela fez a bola explodir a junção das traves no ângulo esquerdo. No rebote, a bola sobrou para Cristiane, que acabou finalizando para fora, à direita do gol.

Aos 38, Thaisinha marcou mais uma vez e ampliou a vantagem santista. A defesa do Palmeiras não conseguiu afastar tentativa de infiltração na grande área e a bola sobrou nos pés da camisa 10. Da entrada da área, ela soltou uma bomba de pé direito para guardar a bola no ângulo esquerdo, sem chances de defesa a Jully.

Na segunda etapa, com sete minutos, Fernanda invadiu a área pela esquerda e chutou com força para o gol, parando em defesa de Jully. No minuto seguinte, Jane aproveitou lançamento pela direita e invadiu a grande área para ficar cara a cara com a goleira. Com finalização forte e cruzada, ela parou em novo bloqueio da arqueira adversária.

Aos 11, mais uma vez, Fernanda foi acionada pela direita e próxima à linha de fundo, mesmo sem ângulo, viu Jully adiantada e arriscou por cobertura. A finalização da camisa 32, no entanto, saiu em tiro de meta, sobre o travessão.

Pakistan’s preparations for the second Test in Melbourne have been dealt a setback after Khurram Shahzad became a significant doubt for the game. Shahzad complained of discomfort in his left side while bowling during the first Test, and has now been sent for an MRI scan. The results for which will come back on Thursday, but ESPNcricinfo understands the his participation in the second is on balance unlikely.While Shahzad was never an express fast bowler, his speeds were down slightly in the second innings. This did not prevent him from being effective, however, as he was Pakistan’s most prolific bowler in the innings, taking 3 for 45 in his 16 overs.Shahzad, alongside fellow debutant Aamer Jamal, was among the few bright sparks for Pakistan in an otherwise miserable performance from the visitors, who slumped to a 360-run defeat with a day to spare. He took five wickets across the Test, including the removal of Steven Smith in each innings. He found more sideways movement through the air than any other Pakistan bowler, and offered control more reliably than any other frontline bowler; he was the most economical of the four over the Test.Shahzad’s doubt adds to Pakistan’s growing bowling injury woes. Naseem Shah was ruled out of the tour with a long-term injury, while Abrar Ahmed missed the first Test with discomfort in his right leg. He is a significant doubt for the whole tour.His replacement Noman Ali sustained a finger injury according to head coach Mohammad Hafeez. Sajid Khan, flown in as cover, arrived too late to play the first Test, and is expected to take his place in the second with Pakistan seeking to play a specialist spinner.Should Shahzad miss out, Pakistan have Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim Jnr in the squad. The second Test starts on December 26 in Melbourne. Pakistan will play a two-day game against a Victorian XI side at the Junction Oval starting December 22. It will not be a first-class game, allowing Pakistan to give a run to as many players as they need.
