Legspinner handed chance for game-time as stand-in for injured Matt Kuhnemann
ESPNcricinfo staff26-Apr-2023
Matt Parkinson has switched to Durham on a short-term loan deal•Getty Images
Matt Parkinson will feature for Durham against Derbyshire in the LV= County Championship on Thursday, after joining the club from Lancashire on a two-week loan.Legspinner Parkinson, 26, has featured in just one of Lancashire’s three Championship fixtures to date, taking 5 for 120 in the second innings against Surrey, and comes into the Durham line-up as a replacement for the injured Australia spinner, Matt Kuhnemann. The extra game-time is opportune for Parkinson, who was surplus to international requirements this winter and was also overlooked in last month’s Hundred draft. He has featured 12 times for England across formats, including a solitary Test appearance against New Zealand at Lord’s last summer, when he was called up as a concussion substitute for Jack Leach.”Following conversations between Matt and the club’s coaching staff, it was agreed that game time in the County Championship would be preferable,” Mark Chilton, Lancashire director of cricket performance, said.”Earlier this week, an opportunity arose for Matt to join Durham on loan and the deal has been agreed between both counties and the player.”This is a great opportunity for him to get some more overs under his belt in a more competitive environment. We are looking forward to seeing how he performs and to welcoming him back into the squad.”Kuhnemann had himself replaced fellow Australian Todd Murphy at Durham, but was unable to take the field on the final day of their drawn match against Durham after suffering a back problem, and will continue to be assessed by the club’s medical staff.Parkinson’s two-week stint covers a solitary Championship game. Durham are one of ten teams in action this week, with Lancashire sitting out the round prior to their match against Nottinghamshire starting at Trent Bridge on May 4, for which he will now be ineligible.
Newcastle United fans had been here before way back in 2023 when Manchester United ran out 2-0 victors over the Magpies in the EFL Cup final.
Thankfully, history didn’t manage to repeat itself two years on from this sobering defeat at Wembley, as Eddie Howe’s Toon shocked Arne Slot’s Liverpool late on Sunday evening to lift the honours as deserved 2-1 winners.
Alexander Isak showed off his class once more in the forward positions to hand his side a famous Cup win, with the Swedish sharpshooter no doubt topping even more shopping lists this summer off the back of his sensational showing in the final.
The latest on Isak's future after Wembley heroics
If Isak is to depart this approaching summer, popping up with a golden strike to hand his side a 2-1 win at Wembley is quite the parting gift.
There are rumours suggesting that the ex-Real Sociedad striker could attempt to negotiate a new St James’ Park deal too, so it remains up in the air as to whether he will stick it out on Tyneside, but his goalscoring prowess cannot be questioned.
The Toon would race into a two-goal lead on the day courtesy of this thumping finish from Isak, with this priceless strike taking his goal haul for the season all the way up to a bumper 23.
Arsenal might well be viewing his expertise in-front of goal as a major plus to fix their striker issues, but whatever comes will come on the end of Newcastle who will bask in the glory of having Isak around for the time being, as his crucial contribution ensured his side finally picked up some significant silverware.
Newcastle also wouldn’t allow the sharp shooter to leave for a small amount – considering he’s being touted to exit for around the £130m mark – which would obviously be the same for this modern day great on Tyneside who solidified his status as a legend even more when holding the EFL Cup aloft.
Newcastle's £100m sale in the making
So many reliable faces in Howe’s camp have now immortalised themselves in Newcastle folklore, with Joelinton a battler from minute one to help his team get over the line, alongside Dan Burn producing the goods with a bullet header.
But, Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes also stood out throughout as a livewire in the middle of the park, with the Toon number 39 winning himself nine duels among other standout numbers.

It was an incredible very well-rounded display from the midfield stalwart at Wembley with a grit present in his game that saw him win five tackles alongside his nine duels, but also an awareness to push forward and help out the likes of Isak bursting through on goal with two key passes registered, on top of tallying up two efforts of his own.
Shields Gazette journalist Dominic Scurr would gift Guimaraes a high 9/10 rating post-match subsequently, with Scurr impressed by how composed the 27-year-old was across the full frantic contest, even when the pressure was ramped up for Newcastle to get over the line.
While Isak has been talked about as the Toon’s next big sale, Guimaraes too could end up banking Howe’s men some serious cash if he can keep up these top-drawer displays, with the Brazilian once rumoured to be valued around the £100m mark, just £30m shy of Isak’s wild price tag.
With an impressive 44 goal contributions next to his name from 144 games at Newcastle, this hefty valuation hasn’t just come out of thin air, with his confidence to dominate up against a star-studded Liverpool midfield further showing off his ability.
But, as can be seen in his emotional post-match celebrations, Guimaraes truly feels connected to the Toon, with many more happy years on the horizon if he manages to stay put.

Me dá muita confiança para crescer e fazer do Corinthians sempre protagonista – recordou o Gigante.
Cássio ainda deve chegar a segunda colocação entre os atletas com mais jogos do Timão. Atualmente, o posto é ocupado por Luizinho, ‘O Pequeno Polegar’, com 606 partidas disputados.
Nottingham Forest are enjoying their best season in the Premier League for decades with Nuno Espírito Santo’s surprise outfit on course to qualify for the Champions League after a very memorable campaign, and they’re already making summer transfer plans to help maintain their lofty status.

Only lead title contenders Liverpool have won more games than Forest this season, which is testament to the fine job done by Nuno, who’s also resurrected his managerial career after failed stints at Tottenham and the Saudi Pro League.

The flair of Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi, combined with Elliot Anderson’s reliability in midfield, has also seriously contributed to Forest’s race for Europe – and there is every chance Nuno’s side will do the unthinkable and finish in a top-four place.
If they manage to find themselves in next season’s Champions League draw, Forest could benefit from a major cash windfall, which may even greatly assist them in the transfer market.
If they’re to carry on at this level, Forest will need to reinvest into the squad and keep up their evolution. Reports suggest Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham is a target for Nuno, following his excellent campaign with Sunderland in the Championship, while there are even rumours of a potential Forest move for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.
Nottingham Forest plan "audacious" move for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz
Now, as per GiveMeSport, £150,000-per-week midfielder Douglas Luiz is back on Forest’s radar as well – after they expressed interest in January.
Douglas Luiz for Juventus.
Luiz, who bagged 10 goals and 10 assists for Aston Villa in all competitions last season before joining Juve in the summer, hasn’t exactly set the world alight in Turin and could now leave at a “reduced rate”.
That is according to GMS, which also writes that Forest are plotting an “audacious” move for Luiz as a result, and could well look to tempt him with a return to the Premier League just one year after he departed for Italy.
“Influential figures” at Forest are seriously considering an approach to the Brazilian, with Juve willing to sell for below £40 million after previously demanding north of that asking price.
Despite impressing for Villa last season, Luiz has started just three Serie A games during his time at Juve, with recently dismissed boss Thiago Motta seemingly not fancying the South American.
It is unclear whether Igor Tudor has different plans for Luiz, but Forest appear to be making their interest known ahead of the summer.

Here’s how ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary has covered those moments since the start of the epic summer of 2005Lord’s, 2005 0.1, Harmison to Langer, no run Just short of a good length and outside the off stump, Langer watches the ball carefully and lets it go through to the wicketkeeper, and with that the Ashes are finally underway! The Gabba, 2006-07 0.1, Harmison to Langer, 1 wide And it’s wild and woolly, a massive wide taken by first slip.

Hosts picked up 65 for 5 to dismiss Australia for 416 after Smith 110 and are only 138 behind

You cannot win a Test match in an hour’s play on day two. Nor can you lose it. But as observers at Lord’s on Thursday can now attest to, you can certainly loosen your grip on proceedings much to the relief of your opponents, as England did.A collapse of 34 for 3 in 7.3 overs saw the hosts cede control of the first innings of this second Test. Having dismissed Australia outright for 416, taking the final five wickets for the addition of just 65 runs, England conspired amongst themselves to turn 188 for one into 222 for 4.This was far from terminal. Stumps arrived with no further losses, Harry Brook unbeaten on a flighty 45 and Ben Stokes playing the part of the adult in the room with a measured 17 not out off 57. Australia’s lead is now just 138.The unnecessary cascade was layered. Steven Smith had “only” made it to 110 for his 32nd Test hundred, four years after a bumper double on this very ground. Midway through the 37th over of England’s response, Nathan Lyon pulled up with a calf injury that will be assessed overnight but almost certainly rules him out of bowling in the rest of this match. And to have lost a dynamic trio of Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett and Joe Root – all to the hook shot – felt deeply unnecessary from England, especially with a tail elongated by the presence of Josh Tongue as the extra seamer.Related

Tongue, though, has been far from an inconvenience. He justified selection as the best on show on Wednesday with the wickets of openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner, and then prised out Smith on Thursday morning. An attempt to drive the seamer on the up was caught superbly by Duckett at gully. It was the second time this summer the Worcestershire quick has seen off the 34-year-old following an lbw decision in his favour when Smith was moonlighting as Sussex’s overseas player in May.Stuart Broad was the first to strike, trapping Alex Carey leg before, only confirmed with a DRS review at his insistence. James Anderson then picked up his first wicket of the match as Mitchell Starc swiped to first slip, with Jonny Bairstow diving across to claim the catch.Tongue’s dismissal of Smith made it 393 for 8 – the same score on which England declared at the end of the first day at Edgbaston. And while Australia were never going to reciprocate a decision that felt like generosity as time wore on, Ollie Robinson’s double strike of No. 10 and 11 – Lyon caught in the deep; Josh Hazlewood scuffing to first slip – meant only 19 came from the final two stands. There was enough time for a four-over spell before lunch, but not one that proved particularly taxing for Zak Crawley and Duckett. And while Crawley did not join his partner in traipsing into the tea interval unbeaten, he could claim plenty of credit for the 132 added in the 26 overs of the middle session.A typically classy 48 in an opening stand of 91 took England into the 18th over before the Kent opener ran inside the line of a Lyon delivery that turned up the slope. Carey, unsighted, did superbly to take cleanly and affect the off-spinner’s fourth stumping already this series. With all the build-up centred around the robustness of the 35-year-old playing his 100th consecutive Test match, here was a cruel irony when he pulled up during the 37th over. He was haring in from the leg side fence attempting to intercept an uppish pull from Duckett played off a short ball from Cameron Green. Lyon grimaced at the end of his chase, and eventually limped off the field before being helped back to the away dressing room by Australia’s team physiotherapist.Given such a high-profile injury, both of a man just four away from 500 career dismissals and the only bowler travelling under three runs an over, the nature of the delivery was in danger of getting lost. The short ball was starting to provide a whiff of opportunity. Duckett looked a tad scratchy after shedding early nerves to reach an eighth fifty-plus score from 84 deliveries. At the time of Lyon’s injury, Duckett had moved to 87, and Pope was on 39. And as their stand eventually swelled to 97 a couple of overs later, the “smart” move was to milk the pace attack, particularly the expensive Starc who was going at close to eights. Evidently, this England team regarded it as too “old-fashioned”.Pope tried to hit Green over Old Father Time but found Smith a fair few feet under him. Duckett, having made it to 98, played his fourth and final uncontrolled hook off Hazlewood to David Warner around the corner. Root, having survived on 1 when a swipe off the same bowler caught behind was ruled out for a front-foot no ball, then completed a dismal three-peat by scuffing Starc to Smith around the corner at square leg. That catch was put under the microscope but was fine. The only thing unclean about it was the connection.England’s vice-captain, their banker of an opener on the cusp of his first Ashes century and their standout batting great, throwing away their wickets through commitment to the bit. And as Lord’s scoffed, they were thankful it was not so much worse. Brook, on 25, swiped Pat Cummins straight to square leg, only for Marnus Labuschagne to tip the ball over the bar.As much as England shot themselves in the foot, Australia deserve credit. They provided the shotgun, reloaded the bullets and played to the vanity of a punchy middle order by constantly telling them how cool they looked pulling the trigger. Short bowling is hard enough at the best of times, but it was a credit to an attack who stepped up and rallied through to the 6:30pm close. Tomorrow will ask a great deal more of them. How Brook and Stokes approach matters on Friday morning remains a mystery. They could take a page out of Smith’s book, who may have needed 169 deliveries to reach three figures, but still offered enough attacking threat, notably with a glorious drive to reach the milestone, followed by a flick through midwicket to celebrate.England, though, will no doubt approach day three with the same vim. Perhaps even more, knowing their main suppressor Lyon will not be there to stop them.
