Man Utd interested in "pure difference maker" as dream Rashford replacement

Manchester United have made an impressive start to 2025. The Red Devils have not lost yet, drawing away to Liverpool in the Premier League and Arsenal in the FA Cup, which they proceeded to win on penalties. Most recently, Ruben Amorim’s side got a 3-1 home win against Southampton, who are bottom of the Premier League.

The star of the show has been Amad. The Ivorian scored the equaliser at Anfield, scored his penalty against the Gunners and, most recently, bagged a 12-minute hattrick against the Saints from the 82nd to 94th minute to earn his side all three points.

However, United clearly feel Amad cannot bear the responsibility all on their own, given they are reportedly targeting an attacking addition.

Man United target new attacker

The player in question here is Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The Englishman, who has yet to be capped by his country, has been superb for the German side this season and is now a target for some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

According to a report from Florian Plettenberg, reporting for Sky Sports, the Red Devils are believed to be ‘seriously interested’ in making a move to sign the 20-year-old, with a move in the summer potentially on the cards.

However, they are not the only side interested in signing him. United are set to go head-to-head with German giants Bayern Munich, and Gittens ‘remains a top transfer target’ for the Bundesliga side.

Plettenberg adds that the former Manchester City youngster is likely to become available if Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Why Gittens would be a good signing

It has been a very impressive season so far for former Manchester City academy player Gittens. The 20-year-old has become a key player for Dortmund this term, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 26 games for the club.

That includes an impressive four goals and one assist in six Champions League appearances. The winger scored away to Real Madrid in a 5-2 defeat, but actually made it 2-0 to Dortmund at the time, bursting to the back post and getting on the end of Donyell Malen’s cross.

It is clear to see why football talent scout Jacek Kulig described Gittens as a “pure difference-maker”. Like Amad does for United, the Dortmund star is someone who can pop up with a big goal or assist to change a game for his side. A goal at the Bernabeu is a perfect example of that.

In fact, he could be the perfect long-term replacement for Marcus Rashford. It seems like his time at United might be over, with Plettenberg reporting on Thursday that Dortmund, and AC Milan, are showing interest in the winger.

If United view Gittens as their replacement for Rashford, the Dortmund number 43 will have to perform superbly if he wants to match the numbers of the Wythenshawe-born star. The United number 10 has 138 goals and 63 assists in 426 games for the club.

To get an idea of how good of a replacement Gittens might be for Rashford, statistical comparisons can be drawn. These particular stats on the pair’s FBref numbers from 2021/22, the Dortmund winger’s first season, up to the 2024/25 campaign.

You can clearly see how good of a ball carrier Gittens is. Per 90 minutes, he averages 5.41 progressive carries, compared to 3.06 for Rashford. He also averages slightly more key passes per game, with 1.10, as opposed to 0.94 for the United star. However, Rashford does come out on top in goals per 90 minutes, with 0.39 compared to Gittens’ 0.34.

It certainly seems like Gittens would be an excellent Rashford replacement if the United academy graduate were to leave Old Trafford, given the quality he can provide as a ball carrier, a creator, and a goalscorer on the left flank.

He is statistically able to hold his own against the United ace, and for the right price, could be a fantastic signing as the long-term replacement for Rashford.

Worcestershire 141 for 5 (Kashif 52) lead Derbyshire 130 (Dal 55, Pennington 4-36) by 11 runsDillon Pennington’s burst with the new ball and Kashif Ali’s half-century on his first-class debut earned Worcestershire the initiative on the opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Derbyshire at New Road.Pennington reduced Derbyshire to 14 for 5 with four wickets in the space of 18 balls after they had been put into bat and, despite a half-century from Anuj Dal, they were bowled out for 130 in 51.1 overs. He clearly enjoys bowling against Derbyshire after registering career-best figures of 5 for 32 and a match return of 9 for 76 in the corresponding game last season.Worcestershire also had initial problems when they launched their reply but Kashif seized his chance following a mountain of runs for the second XI and they closed on 141 for 5 when bad light and then rain halted play at 5.35pm.Related

Kashif was the first product of the South Asian Cricket Academy to sign a professional contract with a first-class county earlier this season. Three hundreds and four fifties in his last seven knocks for the seconds was a testament to his potential and he reached a 72-ball half-century.But he became one of several players during the day who surrendered their wicket to careless shots although there was enough movement on a greenish pitch to keep the seamers interested.Worcestershire handed a debut to Pakistan pace bowler, Mohammad Hasnain. Club captain Brett D’Oliveira was ruled out with a back injury and vice-captain, Jake Libby, led the side while Derbyshire were unchanged from the team which drew with Nottinghamshire.Libby won an important toss on a green tinged wicket and his bowlers soon justified his decision to put Derbyshire into bat. Joe Leach struck with the last ball of the opening over as Harry Came was plumb lbw to a ball of full length. But it was Pennington who broke the back of the Derbyshire top order with a superb opening burst of 4-2-3-4. Brooke Guest was bowled offering no shot to a ball angled in and then Wayne Madsen, who began the day needing 32 runs to reach 1,000 for the season, did not reduce that tally as he edged as delivery which nipped away to Josh Baker at fourth slip.Luis Reece and Hilton Cartwright were both caught behind by Gareth Roderick, after pushing forward to Pennington. Derbyshire captain, Leus du Plooy, opted for an aggressive response and dominated the scoring during a sixth-wicket stand of 39 with Dal.But Ed Barnard, who is to join Warwickshire on a three-year deal from next season, made further inroads with wickets in successive overs.Du Plooy, on 38, played with an angled bat at a delivery and gave Baker another catch, this time at third slip, and Mattie McKiernan offered no shot but inside edged onto the stumps. Derbyshire were then 53 for 7 and in danger of being bowled out before lunch but resistance came from Dal and Ben AitchisonThey added 56 in 22 overs before Barnard came back into the attack and had Aitchison nibbling at a delivery which was safely pouched by Roderick. Dal mixed solid defence with some classy shots and two cuts for four off spinner Josh Baker enabled him to complete a 104-ball halfpcentury with eight boundaries.Hasnain had bowled two threatening spells without any luck but cleaned up the tail in classic fast bowler’s fashion as he yorked both Sam Conners and Dal.Worcestershire also ran into trouble against the new ball and found themselves 23 for 3 in the fifth over. Conners knocked out Libby’s off stump with a ball which nipped back and Ed Pollock, having struck Aitchison for six over midwicket, tried to upper cut his next ball and was caught behind.Taylor Cornall flicked at a leg-side delivery from Conners and also found the gloves of Guest. But the momentum of the game switched into Worcestershire’s favour as Jack Haynes and Kashif counter-attacked during a stand of 97 in 18.4 overs.Haynes reeled off a succession off delightful cover drives and flicks off his legs why Kashif produced a series of back foot punches which pierced the field. The pair took Worcestershire into the lead only to then both surrender their wickets to loose shots.

Man Utd now eye late move for £80k-p/w Rashford replacement from elite club

Manchester United have now been tipped to make a late move to land a wantaway star in the final days of the winter transfer window as they look to replace their own wantaway star in the shape of Marcus Rashford.

Amorim closes door to Rashford again

Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Marcus Rashford is not in his plans despite the Englishman scoring the first goal of his Premier League reign.

Speaking after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Fulham, Amorim doubled down on that fact, claiming that he would rather have his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench ahead of the club’s highest earner.

“If you do the maximum, if you do the right things – we can use every player. You can see it today [Sunday] on the bench – we miss a little bit of pace to go, to change the game, to move some pieces, but I prefer [it] like that. I will put Vital [on the bench] before I put a player that doesn’t give the maximum every day so I will not change that.”

Indeed, The Guardian report that their relationship has devolved to the point that they are no longer on speaking terms, though Rashford is yet to find a route to leave Old Trafford this month and there is a growing possibility that he will remain at his boyhood club after the transfer window slams shut.

However, his role in the squad will have to be replaced, and with speculation also swirling about the future of Alejandro Garnacho, a new forward is key in the final days of the winter window.

Manchester United eye late move for "extraordinary" Bayern star

Now, the Red Devils are keeping an eye on making a late move for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel after he became available this month, it has been reported. Tel has struggled for gametime under Vincent Kompany and has now decided to leave Bavaria, it has been reported, with several clubs interested in his services either on loan or permanently.

Chelsea are one of the sides pushing to sign the forward, who was labelled “extraordinary” by former France youth coach and Premier League legend Thierry Henry.

Now, Sky Sports report that Manchester United are also eyeing a potential late swoop for Tel, with the club remaining “very well informed” on the Frenchman’s situation as they head into the final days of the transfer window.

Tel still has four and a half years left on his £80,000 a week deal in Bavaria, and as a result a loan is possible as well as a potential permanent deal.

It is added that the Red Devils are “considering entering the race” to sign the teenage forward should either Rashford or Garnacho depart, while Tel’s availability on loan could allow the club a little more financial leeway elsewhere as they look to complete a deal to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel.

Capable of playing either as a striker or on the wing, Tel could add some much-needed firepower to Amorim’s ranks, with neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee having impressed under the new manager in the months since his arrival.

Dream Choudhury partner: Sheffield United could land "outstanding" star

Chris Wilder has now penned a new deal to extend his Sheffield United stay until 2028, with the Blades faithful no doubt pleased by this news when you consider their current high standing in the Championship.

Indeed, the South Yorkshire club look revitalised this season under the popular boss despite a troubling relegation having the potential to leave a hangover, with the second automatic promotion spot in the division in their clutches.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Regardless of these many positives, Wilder will want to see some more activity in through the door between now and Monday’s final day of the transfer window to aid his team’s promotion chances, with one midfield recruit being eyed up to potentially link up with Hamza Choudhury.

What Hamza Choudhury brings to Sheff Utd

Before delving deeper into who could line up next to Choudhury, the 27-year-old is more than a welcome addition to Wilder’s ranks.

The promotion hopefuls are somewhat threadbare in the holding midfield positions with Ollie Arblaster out with a serious injury, whilst the likes of ex-Everton man Tom Davies battles with his own fitness concerns.

Therefore, Choudhury’s addition would have been received with open arms when the loan signing was officially confirmed, with Wilder already familiar as to what the midfield battler will offer his team having previously managed him at Watford.

Whilst he didn’t contribute with a single goal or assist in the league during the 2022/23 season, Choudhury shone with his grit and determination more than anything else for the Hornets, with 5.1 duels won on average per league contest.

Last season before his Leicester City journey went south, the 27-year-old also played his part in the Foxes winning promotion up to the Premier League, with those at Bramall Lane hopeful he can add another to his CV in the near future.

He could line up next to a fresh midfield partner too if a move gets over the line before deadline day, as the Blades continue to flex their muscles in the market.

Former Watford loanee Hamza Choudhury.

Sheff Utd could land dream Choudhury partner

As reported earlier this week, the promotion chasers could be back in for Beskitas ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the Blades previously linked with the ex-Liverpool man earlier in the window.

The report states that Oxlade-Chamberlain would be keen on returning to England with both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City pondering a loan-to-buy deal alongside Wilder’s men.

With such a lack of game time coming his way in Turkey as of late, with just two league starts tallied up for his current employers during 2024/25, he could look to the Championship side as a way to boost his confidence and minutes over a Premier League switch.

After all, despite struggling for action this campaign, Oxlade-Chamberlain has shone previously at Beskitas with his Super Lig numbers last season sticking out.

Looking at the table above, Oxlade-Chamberlain could come in and be an experienced and composed head in the middle of the park with an 87% pass accuracy average, on top of the fact he also helped himself to an impressive five goal contributions.

The “outstanding” – as he was once labelled by Jurgen Klopp – 31-year-old could also complement Choudhury’s more attritional game well, with both loanees linking up to gift the Blades more steel but further quality centrally.

Liverpool's former midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The former Champions League winner might not immediately break into the starting XI but adding in the versatile figure feels like a smart buy to make, as Wilder goes about adding in quality here and there to give his side the best fighting chance at an instant promotion.

Phil Salt assault leads Manchester Originals to Hundred record total

Headingley witnesses feast of six-hitting as Originals keep knockout hopes alive

Manchester Originals wreaked havoc at Headingley on Sunday evening as they hammered a record score in 8he Hundred’s short history – 208 for 5 – on the way to a 23-run win over Northern Superchargers.Phil Salt and Laurie Evans mounted a blistering opening attack, scoring 94 off the first 35 deliveries including seven sixes and nine fours as they obliterated the Superchargers bowling. The home side clawed their way back into contention after the opening blitz but Tristan Stubbs and Paul Walter saw Originals to only the competition’s second total of 200 or more with 16 maximums, taking their side past the record number of sixes hit in an innings with ease.Superchargers couldn’t match the demolition job of the Originals batters and despite Adam Hose’s best efforts in scoring 59 off 27, he could only lift his side to a total of 185 for 7.In a new-look opening partnership in the absence of captain Jos Buttler who sustained a calf injury last time out, Salt and Evans set about causing mayhem from the off. Salt climbed into David Willey hitting him for two boundaries in the first set. After Salt was dropped by Dwayne Bravo on 15, a difficult high chance that just slipped through his hands near the boundary edge, Evans punished the allrounder by hitting him for four consecutive boundaries and finishing with a six into the crowd over deep midwicket. With the Superchargers’ bowling attack rapidly falling apart after Salt bludgeoned Adil Rashid for three consecutive sixes, captain Faf du Plessis called an early timeout to attempt to regain control. The tactic worked with first Evans holing out to Harry Brook at long-on for 45 off Bravo, then Salt caught out in the same area off David Wiese for 55, Brook taking a superb catch diving forwards full length.A period of calm followed for the Superchargers with Rashid finding his rhythm to limit the flow of boundaries, Andre Russell in particular finding it hard to score. The momentum switched once again when Stubbs decided to tee-off, scything boundaries off first Craig Miles and then Wiese, the latter picking up the most expensive bowling figures in the competition’s history with 53 coming off his 20.After Stubbs was caught from a Bravo slower-ball for 46 off 23, Walter’s 26-run cameo finished the innings for Originals and left Superchargers with a monstrous chase of 209.Despite Adam Lyth getting the innings off to a good start, repaying Stubbs for some of the treatment he dished out while batting by hitting him for a boundary in the first set, the chase rapidly lost momentum for Superchargers, who themselves had posted 200 for 5 in winning last year’s fixture here.Lyth whacked two sixes and five fours in his 46 off 24 but couldn’t repeat the feats of the openers earlier in the day. When Walter picked up two wickets in two balls, first Lyth caught at mid-off and then Brook first ball caught at deep backward square, the result looked a near-formality.Late thrills from Hose, who scored a boundary-fuelled 23-ball fifty, and sixes from Wiese kept the crowd cheering late into the evening, and Originals were hampered by missing the cut-off and being required to have an extra fielder in the ring for the last 11 balls – but Superchargers always looked like falling short. The result ends their eliminator hopes with Originals still in contention.
