O JOGO
Tottenham Hotspur showed why, under Ange Postecoglou, that at their best they are a force to be reckoned with on Sunday afternoon.
Spurs have flattered to deceive at points this term, notably losing to a winless Crystal Palace a week ago, but since then have shown why teams should be scared of them, beating Manchester City in the cup and then smacking four past Aston Villa in a 4-1 victory.
No team in the Premier League up to this point have scored more than their 22 goals. They are full of life and can outscore pretty much any team they face.
Dominic Solanke – who scored twice at the weekend – will no doubt take the plaudits but another face was just as good, if not better, than the striker. It was a display that had shades of a certain Mousa Dembele.
Why Mousa Dembele was so loved at Spurs
“Dembele was probably the best player I’ve ever seen play football,” remarked Kyle Walker many moons ago. He was “a freak of nature” in the words of Eric Dier.
Gain such fine praise from your pears and it’s hardly a surprise that he was so loved at White Hart Lane.
adam-wharton-mousa-dembele-tottenham-opinion
Dembele had the poise and grace of the finest footballers in the game but he combined that with a steely physical nature. In essence, he had it all. He could score goals, he could tackle ruthlessly and he could pick a pass.
One of his finest campaigns on English shores came in 2015/16 and to give credence to the claims we’ve just offered, he was involved in four goals, registered 2.9 successful dribbles per game and won 3.6 tackles per match. Yeah, he was everywhere, he did it all.
So, when the Belgian decided to leave for China in 2019, it was a sad day for Spurs supporters. Arguably since that day, they have struggled to find a player with similar qualities. That’s perhaps until the win over Aston Villa.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Tottenham's new Mousa Dembele
There were a number of key performers in that win over Unai Emery’s team on Sunday, not least Solanke who was the scorer of two goals.
However, Pape Matar Sarr deserves an equal amount of praise for a display that Football.London felt obliged to hand a 9/10 rating.
In the words of GOAL’s Mitch Fretton, the Senegalese was a “monster” in the middle of the park and although he perhaps didn’t show the same level of drive with the ball, failing to attempt a single dribble, he was very much Dembele-esque in a lot of the work he got through.

In the process of winning three duels, completing a supremely impressive 92% of his passes and boasting more touches (80) than anyone on the field, his finest action came when helping Spurs score their third goal of the game.
If the fact he had more touches than anyone else didn’t give you Dembele vibes then the way he broke up the play for Solanke’s second of the day should.
Sarr pounced on Pau Torres’ loose ball before darting forward with his great lengthy strides and sending it through to Richarlison who laid it on a plate for the £65m signing to score from. It was one of two interceptions from the young 22-year-old who should now be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
He drives his team forward, breaks up the play brilliantly and covers so much ground for his team. All of a sudden he is vital to the way Postecoglou wants his team to play.
Spurs thought they'd signed the new Mousa Dembele, then he left for free

The Brisbane Heat keeper-batter has had another impressive season

Jess Jonassen believes her Brisbane Heat team-mate Georgia Redmayne should be in the Australia side after another prolific WBBL campaign where she has excelled in front and behind the stumps.Redmayne, who has yet to be capped at international level, made 436 runs at 36.33 in the regular season while claiming a tournament-leading 17 dismissals with the gloves to help Heat into the finals where they will face Adelaide Strikers in the Eliminator on Wednesday. She was part of the Australia squad for the multi-format series against India earlier in the season but could not break into the XI even when Rachael Haynes was ruled out with injury. She will again be pushing hard for inclusion when the selectors pick an Ashes squad in January.”Being a fellow Queenslander, she should be in that side,” Jonassen said. “She was part of the series against India and my opinion she is probably the form keeper-batter in the competition at this stage. It’s no surprise to anyone in the Brisbane Heat set-up with the amount of work she has put in.”Her leg-side stumping to remove Ella Hayward against Melbourne Renegades was one of the standout moments of the competition. Redmayne credited the work she had done with former England keeper Sarah Taylor while with Welsh Fire in the Hundred with Taylor noting her excitement at the piece of work on Twitter.”I was at mid-off and it was incredible. She’s tidied up a few of those balls down the leg side and that stumping was probably one of the quickest I’ve seen,” Jonassen said. “It’s really exciting for us that she’s producing the level of cricket that we know she’s capable of and it’s no surprise.”Heat and Strikers will have to take the long route if they want to claim the WBBL title. The winner of their match faces Melbourne Renegades in the Challenger final on Thursday to decide who takes on Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium on Wednesday. Of the four sides still in contention only the Heat are previous winners.Jonassen had no qualms about facing Strikers on their own patch despite finishing above them in the table. Renegades, who finished second, nominated Adelaide as their preferred venue for the Challenger final with border restrictions meaning Melbourne wasn’t an option.”It’s probably a good thing for us that we will be playing against the Strikers,” Jonassen said. “There will be a really good atmosphere. Sometimes you can use that to your advantage if you are the away side and use it to fuel the drive to come out on top. With South Australia’s borders opening to Victoria on Tuesday it means friends and family of players from the state should be able to travel for the Challenger.”Not being able to get to Victoria wasn’t ideal but with the borders opening, get some family over here and it will feel like home I think,” Renegades captain Sophie Molineux said. “A lot of us haven’t been home for a long time so just being able to see parents, sisters, brothers, partners, it’s a bit of a motivator for us. Will be really cool over the next few days to reengage with them and hopefully have them at the ground.”
Seamer hopes lessons of 2019-20 Lions tour will serve him well in maiden Ashes series
Andrew Miller04-Dec-2021As a 13-year-old in 2006-07, Ollie Robinson bunked off a week of school to spend Christmas out in Australia and watch Andrew Flintoff’s team get crushed in three of the five Tests of that winter’s Ashes whitewash. He’s back 15 years later with rather more uplifting recent memories of life Down Under, after his starring role in England Lions’ victory over Australia A two winters ago, a performance which he hopes can help him continue an impressive start to his Test career.Memories are all that any of England’s players have got to fall back on ahead of the Brisbane Test on Wednesday, after an extraordinary build-up – dominated on the one hand by their quarantine period on the Gold Coast, and by torrential rain on the other, as their intended seven days of intra-squad practice were reduced to two and a bit of glorified nets. And yet, Robinson believes his 12 wicketless overs on the penultimate day of that warm-up period will stand him in good enough stead for the Gabba, and better even than their Australian opponents, who have yet to have any meaningful red-ball cricket since their white-ball players returned from victory in the T20 World Cup last month.Related

Squad vs Squad: how do Australia and England stack up?
Broad relishing 'insight' into Australia as Troy Cooley joins England Ashes preparations
“It’s obviously not ideal preparation but, as a group, we feel we’ve made do with what we’ve been given,” Robinson said. “We feel in a good place, and we feel ahead of the Aussies which is the main thing. They were at the World Cup and in quarantine so they are probably a few weeks behind us. We feel like we have some good work in us since being here and hopefully that will give us the edge in the first Test.”Though he is still a rookie in international terms – and certainly compared to his senior seam partners, James Anderson and Stuart Broad – Robinson nevertheless turned 28 at the start of the month, and believes he’s long enough in the tooth to know his own game in spite of the limited preparation time.”It’s changed as I’ve got older,” he said. “I’ve learnt about my body and that I can get bowling ready in different ways. I’ve done a lot more running here than bowling outdoors just because of the weather, and I feel like I’ve learnt a bit more about how to get ready, really. I’ve taken note from Jimmy and Broady, they have done a lot of Test series and situations like this. I’ve done it differently this time but I feel ready to take it on.”Although England’s original bowling plans for the Ashes have had to be scrapped due to the absence of prospective pace spearheads such as Jofra Archer and Olly Stone, Robinson has long seemed assured of a starting berth at the Gabba – both due to the excellence of his maiden summer in England colours, in which he claimed 28 wickets at 19.60 in five Tests against New Zealand and India, and due to his seven-wicket showing in the unofficial Test win over Australia A at Melbourne in March 2020.
“It’s massive,” he said. “I didn’t think at one stage I was going to be playing for England again. So it’s been quite a rollercoaster over the last six to eight months, and to be here with the team, it’s quite an emotional time for me. To hopefully play the first Test is going to be huge for me and a massive achievement, and something that I’ll never forget.”I don’t feel as though [last summer] took a huge amount out of me,” he added. “It was obviously a tough series but I felt mentally fresh and, physically, it probably took me a week to get back to normal after the series, once the emotions died down. I felt like I could go again quite soon. Hopefully that’s a positive to take from that. Look at Jimmy and Broady: they’ve done it for years and years, and they have to be physically and mentally capable and fit to do that, so it makes me feel like I am in a better place after the summer and what I experienced.”Robinson’s two stints in Australian grade cricket, alongside Josh Hazlewood and Trent Copeland for Sydney and St George, have also helped to hone him as a bowler, while more recently he has been picking the brains of Troy Cooley, the former England and Australia bowling coach, who has been recruited by the ECB as a consultant for this opening portion of the tour.”When I came my second time at St George I really spoke to them [Hazlewood and Copeland] in depth about how they bowled in Australia,” he said. “I was actually a professional cricketer the second time out. So I knew that I was trying to make it at a higher level and any information they could give me would help. Hopefully it helps me with the Test series.”One area, however, where he believes he will need no Australian instruction is in the matter of on-field verbals. “The Aussie chat is pretty horrendous if I’m honest, so not really,” he said. “I don’t think me as a person could keep my head down if I tried. I’m definitely going to be trying to get under their skins and try and unsettle them as it were, batters and bowlers really.”If I can get them off their rhythm then we’re winning, so it’s something you’ll definitely see and hopefully we will come out on top.”

Looking to get one over on Chelsea off the pitch, Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly among the clubs that could sign a struggling Stamford Bridge midfielder in January.
Brighton transfer news
Just when Roberto De Zerbi’s exit looked to be the final straw for a Brighton side who have been forced to bid farewell to a number of star men in recent years, the Seagulls welcomed the Premier League’s youngest-ever manager before watching on as he defeated Ange Postecoglou, Erik ten Hag, Eddie Howe, Ange Postecoglou and Pep Guardiola. In the old vs the new, to say that Fabian Hurzeler has come out on top would be a damning understatement.
Sat as high as sixth in the Premier League, the Sussex club remain one of, if not the most intriguing side to watch in England’s top flight. Their sustainable model is a mere fantasy for several clubs, but even after losing Graham Potter, De Zerbi, Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, the success of that model remains Brighton’s impressive reality.
After losing Caicedo and Cucurella to Chelsea, however, it’s about time the Seagulls get some revenge on the transfer front. According to Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, Brighton could now sign Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on loan from Chelsea in the January transfer window and are one of several Premier League clubs eyeing the midfielder.
Brighton in race to sign £5m "Barella regen" in January to partner Baleba
He could be the key missing piece for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.
ByBen Browning Oct 28, 2024
Since arriving for a reported £30m in the summer transfer window, ironically choosing Stamford Bridge over The Amex, Dewsbury-Hall has played just 43 minutes of Premier League action.
To put that into context, Brighton’s Matt O’Riley suffered an injury on his debut against Crawley Town in the Carabao Cup back in August before only returning – and scoring – against Manchester City last time out. With that league debut, the Dane completed just 10 minutes less than what Dewsbury-Hall has received for the Blues all season.
"Calm" Dewsbury-Hall needs Brighton rescue
Having failed to complete a move to Brighton once during the summer, Dewsbury-Hall must not make the same mistake twice if the Seagulls come swooping in for a second time in the January transfer window. For Hurzeler, meanwhile, the deal would also make sense. Strength in depth is key and there’s certainly a talented player in Dewsbury-Hall, who managed 12 goals and 15 assists for Leicester City in the Championship last season.
Dewsbury-Hall
Chelsea boss Ezno Maresca may be left with little choice but to let Dewsbury-Hall leave on loan, despite heaping praise on his midfielder last season before bringing him to Stamford Bridge in the summer. The Italian told Sky Sports: “He was full of responsibility at first. But since the first international break he has improved a lot.
“He’s calm, fantastic with the ball, he knows when to attack and what to give the team. He is so dangerous near the box, and has the quality to score or assist from anywhere. He could already have had 10 or 12 assists. He is probably the most-improved for us and he’s in the perfect position.”

West Ham contemplate January signings amid Lopetegui struggles
Manager Julen Lopetegui has endured a nightmare start to his London Stadium career, with West Ham struggling to galvanise any kind of winning momentum or clear footballing identity during his early tenure in charge.

West Ham have been slammed under Lopetegui, and they’ve been accused of regressing under the 58-year-old’s watch following the departure of David Moyes, who guided the east Londoners through back-to-back campaigns in Europe and won them their first trophy in decades.
“I don’t think Lopetegui is capable of turning this around,” wrote journalist Roshane Thomas.

“He was the wrong appointment. This team has regressed, has no identity, the players look despondent and the formation/tactics are questionable. Lopetegui wants fans to reserve judgement until May, but there is little encouragement that things will improve. He keeps persisting with out of form Rodriguez, Summerville brought off early again and another game with a different formation. I could go on all day.”
In the past few weeks, reports have claimed that Lopetegui is urging the West Ham hierarchy to make January signings, as the former Real Madrid boss looks to preserve his job at the London Stadium.
A lot of the rumours have surrounded the potential addition of a new attacking option, amid striker Niclas Fullkrug’s struggles with injury, but it is now believed that West Ham are contenders to sign Brighton starlet Tariq Lamptey.
West Ham "well-placed" to sign Tariq Lamptey
According to Football Insider, West Ham are “well-placed” to sign Lamptey over interest from the likes of Everton, and Brighton could push him out the door in January, rather than lose him for free at the end of his contract.
This represents an opportunity for the Irons to bring in a capable deputy for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the long-term, considering Vladimir Coufal is out of contract at the end of this season, although they will also face competition from Tottenham, with Postecoglou keen to find an alternative option to Pedro Porro.
Andy Robertson challenges Tariq Lamptey
“He’s such a level-headed character – I don’t think I’ve met anybody quite like him, in fairness, in terms of how humble he is,” said former Brighton boss Graham Potter in 2020.
“I’ve got no concerns for him in terms of what the outside noise says. He just wants to help the team, he wants to do well for himself and his family. He’s just a fantastic character.
“He’s got such electric pace, but lots of players have that. It’s having the ability to run in behind. The ability to run into space is often what separates players. Tariq does that, but he’s got courage, he does his defensive work. The boys love him and he’s in a good place.”
Not since Gilchrist’s debut in 1999 as an Australia keeper made their Test debut at home

Alex Carey will start his Test career with plenty of international experience•Getty Images
Adam Gilchrist expects Alex Carey to warm to Test cricket, knowing all too well the upside of serving a long-term apprenticeship in the coloured clothes before donning the baggy green.Carey, having captained Australia’s ODI side earlier this year and represented his country in 83 white-ball matches, will replace Tim Paine behind the stumps in next week’s Ashes opener at the Gabba. The catalyst for Carey’s elevation, confirmed on Thursday, is notably different to that which resulted in Gilchrist succeeding Ian Healy as Test wicketkeeper at the same ground in 1999.Related

Carey determined to keep focus in 'the biggest game I'll play' as Test debut locked in
Carey is not as dynamic a batter as Gilchrist; nor has he enjoyed the same stability while batting in every spot from No. 1 to No. 8 for Australia. But Gilchrist, who last month gave Carey a technical tune-up over the phone, says recent years will help the South Australian handle a pressure-laden Test debut against England.”I see a lot of similarities between Alex’s journey and mine,” Gilchrist told AAP at Fox Cricket’s season launch. “When I walked out to bat, Mark Waugh was at the non-striker’s end and I’d opened with him 70-odd times.”Starting my Test career, it wasn’t completely new. There was a really nice settling air of familiarity. That doesn’t guarantee success but it certainly gives you a nice launching pad.”Alex deserves the opportunity, he’s worked really hard in that white-ball set-up. His keeping has been really consistent, I think he’ll warm to Test cricket really nicely.”Carey, who edged Josh Inglis in a selection showdown to replace former captain Paine in a 15-player squad for the first two Tests, will be the first gloveman to be presented with a baggy green on home soil since Gilchrist.Carey, whose head is still spinning after breaking the news to a tearful mum, dad and wife, hoped previous experience keeping to Australia’s Test attack would help settle any nerves in “the biggest game I’ve played”.Carey passed 50 in just one of eight Sheffield Shield innings this season but posted a timely one-day century on Sunday. In the previous three seasons, he has celebrated four Shield hundreds from nine games while routinely missing red-ball cricket to play ODIs and T20s.”The focus has never really been on his keeping. As is always the way in this day and age, it’s all about the runs if you’re a keeper,” Gilchrist said. “He reached out a couple of weeks ago just to have a chat about a few things.”He will often touch base – whether it’s around little technical things, bat and gloves, approach or just what I’ve seen. There aren’t many of us keepers, so you have to try to stick together.”
