Limited-overs captain says no chats with team management in England about player selection have happened yet

Dhawan: This tour a ‘great platform’ before T20 World Cup
Competition for the opening slot is a good thing, and the Sri Lanka tour will be a step towards narrowing down on a few options ahead of the T20 World Cup, according to India’s stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan, ahead of the first ODI in Colombo.”Every series is big when you play for India and all the players know how important every game is,” Dhawan said. “There is competition for the opening slot and it’s a very good thing. Whoever plays, the goal is to do well as a team. Along the way, if we also do well, then these things [selection] take care of themselves.”Related

Dhawan also stated he hasn’t had any specific conversations with the Virat Kohli or Ravi Shastri ahead of the Sri Lanka series, in terms of looking out for certain players. At the same time, he was open to the idea of fielding certain players through a mutual understanding with the Indian team management in England.”As of now, I haven’t had any specific chat with Virat or Ravi ,” he said. “I’m sure they may have spoken to Rahul , or the selectors and that message will be conveyed to us. Whoever it is, the focus is on the T20 World Cup. If selectors or team management come to a mutual understanding that we need to play someone specifically, this is a great platform to have a look at them.”Dhawan was asked about his thoughts on India being labelled a second-string XI by Arjuna Ranatunga, the former Sri Lanka captain. “If they feel it is a second team, that is their feeling,” he chuckled. “We are here to play Sri Lanka, it counts as an international match, and we are here to seize the opportunities.”The Indian captained was coy when asked about his opening partner. India have Prithvi Shaw, Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad to choose from. It’s likely Shaw could get the first opportunity, having come into the tour on the back of a prolific run in white-ball cricket this year. The 837 runs Shaw made during Mumbai’s title-winning run, including three 150-plus scores, is the most in Vijay Hazare Trophy history, and Shaw continued his sparkling form in the IPL too. Padikkal, the tall left-handed opener, finished second in the Hazare Trophy with 737 runs, courtesy four consecutive List A centuries. He followed that up with an excellent IPL season for Royal Challengers Bangalore before the season was postponed due to the pandemic. All Dhawan gave away, however, was that the player had been identified and will only be revealed on match day. The Indian captain was also hopeful of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal bowling well in tandem. The two haven’t played together since the 2019 World Cup in England.”They both share great chemistry and have won so many matches and series for us,” he said. “They are bowling really well. Even Rahul Chahar, he’s a great spinner. We have a bunch of very good spinners, all of whom are bowling well and are on top of their game and fitness.”Dhawan was then prodded a bit about India’s six spin bowling options – the others are Krunal Pandya and the uncapped duo of Varun Chakravarthy and K Gowtham – and if they intended to give all of them a look-in at some stage.”We haven’t really discussed who gets how many games,” he said. “The first goal is to win the series and we will play the best XI to win. We will pick whoever we feel can do well [on a given day]. it’s not like we have to play everyone just because we have brought them here. That is not the thought process.”Dhawan was most happy about having gotten to spend time with the younger players. The group spent two weeks in Mumbai and have spent three weeks in Colombo, having bonded on and off the field, apart from playing a few practice matches. In a video put out on social media, Dhawan was even seen playing flute with Shaw singing along.”I’ve interacted with all my younger colleagues,” he said with a smile. “It’s good to know them personally, see their skills in the nets. It’s great to be connected to them – [Sandeep] Warrier, [Ishan] Porel, Akshdeep [Singh] and all other youngsters . There is great vibe in the team. It’s been a month now [that they have been together].”

“We, as CSA, literally killed the careers of these two gentlemen”

Cricket South Africa is to blame for the decline in the coaching careers of Geoffrey Toyana and Paul Adams, who were both on the radar to take over the national team in 2017, but missed out in favour of Ottis Gibson. Former CSA CEO Thabang Moroe, speaking at the Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings, detailed how Toyana and Adams were overlooked and held CSA’s administration responsible for their fate, saying the pair should have been involved at international level.”It is testament to how we, as administrators, have behaved over the years. This is how people of colour have kept missing opportunities that could have been afforded to them by us,” Moroe said. “We, as CSA, literally killed the careers of these two gentlemen. These are the inequalities that are glaringly there if you look at the landscape of South African cricket.”Moroe, who served as CSA’s vice-president from 2016 to 2018, revealed how the board agreed that after Russell Domingo, who was South Africa’s first head coach of colour from 2013 to 2017, South Africa would have another head coach of colour. A sub-committee on the board, the cricket committee, earmarked Toyana and Adams as candidates to succeed Domingo.Related

“When Russell’s tenure ended, CSA’s cricket committee identified two coaches we would need to look at to replace Russell as the coach of the national team. Those were Geoffrey Toyana and Paul Adams. They were the two most successful coaches in the country,” Moroe said. “It was a no-brainer that either both would be hired, with one as an assistant, or one would definitely be made coach. At board level, we discussed the cricket committee’s paper and the one thing the board agreed on was that we would hire a black coach.”An adhoc committee, which did include Moroe, was instated to advertise, shortlist and interview candidates and make a recommendation on Domingo’s replacement. “During that period, even at board level, we were talking about how Geoffrey Toyana was head and shoulders above other coaches, purely because of his performances,” Moroe said. “When the chairperson of the adhoc committee announced that they preferred Ottis Gibson to be the coach, it came as a surprise to us because we were talking about the short period the coach would have before the next World Cup and how we wanted a coach that was familiar with all our players in the system, with the South African environment and somebody who was going to be able to hit the ground running. Choosing somebody who didn’t even live in this country came as a surprise given all these things we had listed as concerns.”It also raised questions specifically about Toyana, who was the first black African coach in the franchise system. He had overseen the Lions to four trophies in as many seasons and was considered the frontrunner to succeed Domingo.”Some board members, including myself, asked where Geoffrey Toyana’s shortcomings were because we were all sure Geoffrey would be the coach,” Moroe said. “The chairperson of the adhoc committee then told us they were not happy with how he articulated himself and they were not happy with his presentation skills. That was concerning feedback because we were not hiring him to do presentations or public speaking. We wanted somebody who knew how to coach the crop of players we had at the time and somebody who could give us good results. Although we were going through the formal process, we all felt Geoffrey was the guy, only to be told he would not be the guy.”Although unhappy, the board accepted the recommendation to appoint Gibson but, “we said we should ensure Paul Adams or Geoffrey Toyana becomes the assistant,” Moroe said. “The majority felt Geoffrey should be the one we push for with Paul Adams coming in as a spin-bowling coach.”Moroe was tasked with welcoming Gibson into the country and informing him about the board’s decision on the assistant coach position, which Gibson did not support. “Immediately Ottis Gibson raised concerns and one of the concerns he raised was that we were specifically hiring him to win the World Cup and if we wanted him to win the World Cup, we needed to give him leeway to choose his support staff,” Moroe said. “He felt he can only win the World Cup with a support staff that believed in him which, we felt, was a fair point.”According to Moroe, Gibson wanted to hire someone, whose name Moroe could not recall, who was demanding a salary higher than Gibson’s. CSA refused. Then, Gibson asked for Dale Benkenstein, but CSA refused again. “Benkenstein was a high school cricket coach at the time and did not have the necessary qualifications to be coaching in the national team, let alone being assistant coach,” Moroe said.Thabang Moroe: We, as CSA, literally killed the careers of Geoffrey Toyana and Paul Adams•Getty Images
Benkenstein was later brought on as a batting coach, and split those with his responsibilities at Hilton College. Gibson, meanwhile, went on to ask for “one-on-ones with all professional coaches in the country so that he could choose who he felt was the guy who could take over as assistant,” Moroe said.”He met with all the coaches in the franchise system, had one-on-ones with them, watched them coaching their teams and some during live games and he had come to a conclusion in terms of who he felt was suited to be assistant coach. He said he would prefer Malibongwe Maketa to be his assistant. That surprised me. At the time we had Paul Adams and Geoffrey Toyana and Malibongwe had only been a franchise coach for one season. He hadn’t really been tested in the system to say he has got what it takes. He hadn’t built [up] enough track record. I told Ottis of my concerns but supported his decision.”Maketa, who was the Warriors coach at the time, went on to work as Gibson’s assistant coach but lost his job when Gibson was fired after the 2019 World Cup. Maketa is now the South Africa A coach. At the time of Maketa’s appointment, Toyana and Adams continued as franchise coaches, but not for much longer.”If you look at Geoffrey Toyana and Paul Adams’ careers, immediately after the announcements were made of appointing Ottis and his support staff, they somehow started having misunderstandings with their own players in their franchise teams, started fighting with their own boards and then they were not coaching in franchise cricket.”Toyana was moved sideways at the Lions after 2017-18 season and then replaced by Enoch Nkwe. His most recent work was as assistant coach for the Titans. Last year in a radio interview, former CSA president Chris Nenzani said Toyana being overlooked for the national job was “unfortunate.” Moroe said it was “just wrong,” for Nenzani to say that when he was in charge of the board at the time. “We had an opportunity as a board to do what we knew was right at the time,” he said.Adams lost his job at the Cobras to Ashwell Prince and has since been appointed head coach of Border, who will play in the second division of the restructured domestic scene. Adams has also given testimony at the SJN, in which he spoke about being nicknamed, “brown s***” by his team-mates, while Toyana is due to appear at the hearings later this week.Moroe moved on from vice-president of the board to CSA CEO, and it was under him that Gibson was dismissed and Nkwe made interim team director. When Moroe was suspended for misconduct, CSA underwent an administrative overhaul and Nkwe was replaced by Mark Boucher. Nkwe is now Boucher’s assistant, while Moroe was sacked last August after being found guilty.
Leeds United’s summer transfer window was full of ups and downs as they lost several key players and were able to snap up new recruits to bolster their squad.
After the Whites lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley in May, the likes of Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, and Glen Kamara all left on permanent deals to join top-flight clubs.
The West Yorkshire outfit finished third in the Championship in the regular season but were unable to secure promotion via the play-offs, which resulted in a number of their top performers moving on.
Those exits did allow the club to swoop for the likes of Joe Rodon, Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell, and Jayden Bogle, among others, though, to strengthen the playing squad.
Leeds did not, however, decide to strengthen their goalkeeping options, beyond the addition of Alex Cairns as a veteran third-choice, after Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow spent the 2023/24 campaign as the first and second-choice.
You could argue that their decision not to bolster that position could turn to be a mistake, as Meslier’s form in the Championship over the past 14 months or so has been far from perfect.
Illan Meslier's Championship form
The French shot-stopper was the club’s number one in the Premier League for three years before they were relegated from the top-flight in the 2022/23 campaign, as the goalkeeper let in 12.4 more than expected based on the post-shot xG value of the efforts on his goal.
Relegation to the Championship provided the players with a chance to dominate matches and showcase the best of their abilities whilst winning games on a regular basis, rather than scrapping it out at the bottom of the table fighting for survival.
For Meslier, however, it meant that he faced fewer shots and did not have as many chances to show off his shot-stopping quality, which meant that his mistakes were far more noticeable.
The 24-year-old dud ranked within the bottom 31% of goalkeepers in the division for percentage of crosses claimed (4.9%) and ranked within the bottom 36% for post-shot xG minus goals allowed per 90 (0.07).
Meslier ended the season with 3.1 more goals conceded than expected based on the post-shot xG of the efforts against him, which shows that the Frenchman underperformed as a shot-stopper whilst also being underwhelming when it came to coming off his line to collect crosses.
This season, the left-footed titan ranks within the bottom 28% of goalkeepers for post-shot xG minus goals allowed per 90 (0.10) and his colossal error against Sunderland plays a part in that.
As you can see in the clip above, Meslier had a howler against the Black Cats in the 97th minute on Friday night, and his error cost his team two points at the Stadium of Light.
The French colossus needs to improve to show that he can be a reliable shot-stopper for Leeds moving forward, as he is now in his fifth full season as the number one and is still making plenty of mistakes.
Things could have been so different for the Whites, though, as they once had a goalkeeper who is now better, and more valuable, than Meslier – Elia Caprile.
Elia Caprile's Leeds career
In January 2020, midway through the club’s promotion-winning season under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds swooped to sign the teenager from Chievo Verona.
Caprile went on to keep five clean sheets in 19 matches for the U21 side at Thorp Arch before joining Pro Patria in the third tier of Italian football on loan in the 2021/22 campaign.
The young stopper kept 12 clean sheets in 36 league matches during that loan spell but that was not enough to convince Victor Orta or Bielsa that he had a long-term future at the club.
They cashed in on the promising talent in the summer of 2022, as Serie B outfit Bari came in and secured his services for an undisclosed fee, which Transfertmarkt reported to be around €1.75m (£1.5m).
In the subsequent season, Meslier conceded 12.4 more goals than expected based on post-shot xG as Leeds were relegated from the Premier League and Caprile kept 14 clean sheets and saved 77% of the shots against him in 37 Serie B games.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.
His form for the second division outfit earned him a big move in the summer of 2023, a year on from his exit from Elland Road, to Serie A champions Napoli, and he has developed into a player Daniel Farke would love to have in his team.
Elia Caprile's current market value
At the time of writing (07/10/2024), Football Transfers has the Italian goalkeeper’s current Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at a whopping €16.7m (£13.7m).
Meanwhile, Meslier, who was backed by the club instead of Caprile, has a current xTV of €15.4m (£12.8m), which means that the former Whites man is currently worth more than the Frenchman.
The Napoli star, who was once lauded as a “superstar” by scout Jacek Kulig, has made three appearances in the Serie A so far this season for Antonio Conte’s side, saving 75% of the shots against him, after impressing enough on loan with Empoli last term to earn a place in the first-team squad.

As you can see in the table above, Caprile prevented 0.96 goals in 23 appearances for Empoli in the Italian top-flight during the 2023/24 campaign.
Whereas, Meslier struggled at times in the Championship, letting in 4.49 more than expected, in his 44 appearances for Leeds under Farke.
The Empoli loanee also ranked within the top 11% of goalkeepers in the Serie A for percentage of crosses stopped (7.9%), whilst Meslier – as aforementioned – ranked in the bottom 31% for percentage of crosses stopped (4.9%) in the league last term.
These statistics show that Caprile significantly outperformed the Frenchman as both a shot-stopper and a dominant box presence, whilst playing at a higher level.
Therefore, Farke would love to have the 23-year-old Italian available to him as he appears to be an upgrade on Meslier, who the club kept hold of whilst allowing the former Chievo youngster to leave.
Leeds signed Meslier instead of a GK who Messi now thinks is "the best"
The Whites once wanted to sign a goalkeeper who now stars in the Premier League.

This is why Bielsa and Orta messed up by selling the youngster to Bari as they did not give him a chance to prove himself at Elland Road. If they had, Leeds may have had a better goalkeeper available to them right now.

Newcastle United had a curious summer transfer window in 2024.
They made five signings, although two of those were free transfers, namely experienced goalkeeper John Ruddy and defender Lloyd Kelly. On top of that, the signing of Lewis Hall was an obligatory agreement with Chelsea, following clauses met in his loan contract from the 2023/24 campaign.
The two other signings made by the Magpies were Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and exciting young centre-forward William Osula, whom they acquired from Sheffield United.
Whilst the Magpies did not exactly spend big, compared to previous windows since the Saudi takeover, they have been linked with a big addition in the summer of 2025.
Newcastle target Premier League attacker
The player in question here is Crystal Palace and England international attacker Eberechi Eze. The 26-year-old, who is a crucial player for the Eagles, and made England’s squad for Euro 2024, was linked with a move away from Selhurst Park in 2024, but that did not materialise.
However, according to Football Insider over the weekend, Newcastle are among the clubs interested in prising the Palace star away from London.
Newcastle will not be alone in their quest to sign Eze next summer. The North East outfit are likely to go up against two longstanding Premier League rivals for Eze’s signature with the report noting that Tottenham and Liverpool want him too.
The England international had a £68m release clause in his contract in his contract over the summer which is inactive at the moment but can be activated again in the summer of 2025. That would see Eze become the Magpies’ all-time record signing, beating that of Alexander Isak in 2022, who cost £63m.
Why Eze would be a good signing
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has been superb for the Eagles during his time at the club. He has so far played 133 times for the South London outfit, scoring 29 times and grabbing 18 assists.
Ebere Eze against Manchester United
The former QPR man was particularly excellent last season, scoring 11 goals and posting four assists in 27 Premier League games. This term, he has one goal in the first seven games, as well as two in the Carabao Cup to go along with an assist.
He was described as a “superstar” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, who explained that he thinks Eze thrives with less responsibility. He would certainly not be shackled by such an issue in a team that includes the likes of Isak and Anthony Gordon, to name two of the Magpies’ attacking options.
One player who the Eagles’ number 10 could replace in the Newcastle squad is Miguel Almiron. The Paraguayan was in talks to leave St James’ Park last season according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, but ended up remaining at the club. He since has just 30 minutes in the Premier League under his belt this term.
Miguel Almiron
There is no doubt that the signing of Eze would be an upgrade on Almiron, and that is something that is backed up by the stats, courtesy of Squawka. Last term in the Premier League, the England international outperformed the Newcastle number 24 in several key metrics.
Last term, he averaged 2.4 chances created per 90 minutes, compared to just 1.1 from the Paraguay attacker. Not only that, Eze played slightly more forward passes than Almiron, with 8.3 each game, as opposed to 8.1 from the Newcastle man.

Eze is a spellbinding dribbler, who is a master in tight spaces. He is superb at using his quick feet to evade pressure and ride tackles. Last term, he completed 3.1 take-ons per game, with the Newcastle winger far less, just 1.1 each match.
Crystal Palace midfielderEberechi Eze.
There is little doubt that the Crystal Palace superstar would be an upgrade on Almiron. Whilst £68m is a steep fee, he would improve the side and the Saudi PIF did not exactly spend heavily at St James’ Park in 2024.
There is certainly scope for such a signing, and Eze would be a brilliant way to upgrade the side as Howe looks to guide Newcastle back to Europe.
