Trouble in paradise as Noosa tightens on England's Ashes hopes

It came after a member of England’s security staff made contact with a Seven Network cameraman on Saturday at Brisbane airport, trying to block him from filming the team.Cricket Australia (CA) media directives state that teams are not available for interview while in transit, but can be filmed “from a respectful distance”.England captain Ben Stokes was also unhappy with an Adelaide journalist who breached those guidelines on Saturday, annoyed he had been recorded from close distance. The tourists have been heavily scrutinised since touching down in Australia, at times becoming the butt of jokes while going 2-0 down in the series and with their aggressive style of play not working.Stokes went as far as to pose for a photo with a radio duo during the team’s highly-publicised break in Noosa, as they held up signs referencing “moral victories” and “Bazball”.”I didn’t see [the airport incident], but obviously it wasn’t ideal,” McCullum said on Sunday. “But hopefully it’s been dealt with and everyone’s able to move on.”Obviously, we know coming to Australia, there’s a lot of eyeballs, there’s a lot of intensity and scrutiny on everything we do. I feel like we’ve managed ourselves pretty well throughout this tour. I thought the boys were outstanding.”The last week we’ve had, they’re engaging with a lot of the locals and everyone was in good spirits. There was some good banter flying both ways and I think everyone treated it [well] and respected it.”McCullum also defended England’s decision to go to Noosa, with the trip having been booked well in advance given the gap between the Perth and Adelaide Tests.”It was quite an important period,” the beleaguered coach said. “We could give ourselves a chance to allow some of the lessons we’ve learnt over the last couple of weeks to settle and to recalibrate a little bit. I think now the freshness which we come into this Test match with will hopefully pay off.”McCullum’s comments came as Green admitted he felt sorry for the tourists, admitting he too battled to grow accustomed to the spotlight put on players.”You never like getting filmed, especially when you want to get away from it,” Green said.  “There’s always sympathy for anyone in life that’s getting filmed in public or in a private space. It’s never a nice feeling.”

Arsenal now looking at signing £85m striker called "the best" in his league

Arsenal are now actively looking at signing a striker called "the best" in his whole division, as sporting director Edu Gaspar and co scour the market for a new target man.

Arsenal linked with new centre-forward despite Havertz heroics

Last season, one of the real positives for Mikel Arteta was Kai Havertz and his impressive performances in a makeshift centre-forward role, with Gabriel Jesus even finding himself behind the German in Arsenal's pecking order at times.

Arsenal have looked into signing £205,000-per-week Real Madrid star

He’s very highly thought of.

2 ByEmilio Galantini Aug 16, 2024

Havertz finished 2023/2024 with 14 goals and seven assists across 51 appearances in all competitions, and he looks set to play another big role under Arteta this season, even if Arsenal do manage to sign a new number nine.

It has been reported this summer that Arteta is keen to bring in a striking partner for Havertz, with Arsenal attempting to sign Benjamin Sesko for the role earlier this window. While the Slovenian has a proposal from the Gunners, and other interested sides like Man United and Chelsea, he instead remained at RB Leipzig to better his development.

After missing out on Sesko, Arsenal have been linked with an array of marquee star new forward options, including the likes of Victor Osimhen (Napoli) and Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), but there are a few others they could turn to.

Ivan Toney is still being loosely mentioned in tandem with Arsenal, as the England international is still no closer to leaving Brentford, despite constant reports in the build up to this summer which suggested he was very likely to leave.

Another who hasn't been floated that much by the press for a while is Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez. The Mexico international racked up a total of 26 goals for the Dutch giants last term, and has started this campaign in rip-roaring fashion with two goals and two assists in as many games.

Arsenal looking into signing Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord

According to journalist Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport, Arsenal are looking into signing Gimenez from Feyenoord as an option, alongside the likes of Gyokeres and Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

The 23-year-old is Feyenoord's star frontman, and as a result, the Eredivisie side won't let him go on the cheap. Reports earlier this year claimed Gimenez commands a price tag of around £85 million, which would be the most Arsenal have ever spent on an out-and-out striker.

"He’s back here in the middle of the defenders and he’s really fast," said former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt on one of the striker's performances. "Watching the keeper before he shoots, the rest. In my opinion, he is currently the best striker in the Eredivisie."

Fulham struck gold on "insane" star who’s worth more than Smith Rowe

Fulham have had a busy summer transfer window once again. The Cottagers have brought five new faces to the club as they look to strengthen Marco Silva’s side to improve on the 13th-place finish last campaign.

A large aim for the window for Fulham this summer has been to strengthen things at the back. To help with that task, Silva has brought back two former players to the club.

The first is academy graduate Ryan Sessegnon, who joined on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur. Joachim Andersen, who spent a season on loan at the club in 2020/21, signed from Crystal Palace for £30m.

The other defensive signing saw Villarreal centre-back Jorge Cuenca make the move to Craven Cottage for an undisclosed fee. The Cottagers also signed Sander Berge from Burnley for a fee of around £25m.

It has certainly been a hectic few months for Fulham in the transfer window, and they have added some talented players to their squad. However, their marquee signing this summer has been Emile Smith Rowe, and he has begun to make waves already in his short time at the club.

Smith Rowe’s move to Fulham

The marquee signing at Craven Cottage this summer has certainly been Smith Rowe, who joined the club from Arsenal. The Hale End academy graduate made the move from North to West London for an initial price tag of £27m, although that is a deal that could rise to £34m with add-ons.

Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe

The past few seasons have not been easy for the talented attacker, who has struggled with injuries and regular minutes as a knock-on effect of those fitness issues. Last term, the England international played just 13 times in the Premier League and three games in the Champions League.

However, his season in 2021/22 was phenomenal, with Smith Rowe showcasing his sparkling talent. The Fulham number 32 scored ten goals and registered two assists in 33 Premier League games that season, his best return. It was a campaign that showed off his slick close-quarter dribbling and exceptional control of the ball.

It is certainly an enterprising and ambitious signing from the Cottagers, and Smith Rowe is already repaying their faith. The Hale End graduate scored in his first home game against Leicester City, finishing off a tidy move to give his side a 1-0 lead.

The investment of up to £34m for such a talented attacking midfielder certainly seems like a superb addition to the Fulham squad.

It may also be the case that the club can make their money back on the attacker, through the sale of another highly valued player, who could leave this summer.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Antonee Robinson’s value in 2024

The player in question here is American left-back Antonee Robinson. The 27-year-old has impressed during his time at Craven Cottage, after joining the club in 2020. Football analyst Ben Mattinson called Robinson "insane", and that is certainly a thought shared by Silva.

Antonee Robinson for Fulham.

The Fulham boss played the American, who has 46 caps for his country, in all but one of the 38 Premier League games last term, and he got six assists in that time. He has started this season excellently, too, registering an assist against the Foxes last Saturday afternoon.

That said, he has been linked with a move away from the club this summer, with a report from GiveMeSport in the last few days suggesting Manchester United are interested. As per an earlier report, he is valued at around £40m, meaning the Cottagers would make back the money they paid to sign Smith Rowe.

Perhaps surprisingly, Robinson is not one of Fulham’s highest earners and is in the seventh-highest pay bracket at Craven Cottage, one of four players to earn £50k per week as per Capology.

Data from Capology

Given the fact the full-back is a key attacking outlet and works hard off the ball, selling him this summer is a risky move. However, they have the chance to recoup the fee they paid for Smith Rowe, meaning it could be a lucrative deal for Fulham to do this summer.

Whether he sticks around or does move away, they've certainly struck gold on this signing, one they completed for just £2m.

Sikandar Raza out for an indefinite period after bone marrow infection

Allrounder feared he had cancer until tests came back negative, but his recovery is still expected to take several weeks

Mohammad Isam21-Apr-2021

Sikandar Raza played through the series against Afghanistan in serious pain•Abu Dhabi Cricket

Sikandar Raza will be out of action for an indefinite period after suffering an infection on his bone marrow, which was suspected to be cancerous at one stage. Following surgery on April 2 to remove the tumour, he has been cleared of serious illness but the recovery period is expected to take several weeks.Raza, who is at home going through cycles of medication and injections, said that he first felt a lot of pain in his right arm during the Zimbabwe-Afghanistan series in Abu Dhabi last month. He played both Tests and the three T20Is, which ended on March 20.Returning to Harare, he saw a specialist and tests revealed something more serious than just regular muscle pain.”I had pain in my right arm during the Abu Dhabi Tests,” Raza told ESPNcricinfo. “We treated like it was muscular pain initially but the pain kept getting worse. I remember staying up all night, unable to sleep despite having sleeping pills. That’s how I played the Test matches.”After coming home, the ultrasound showed that the muscles are all fine. The MRI showed that I had a foreign or alien substance on my bone marrow. Seeing this the surgeon told me that this substance could make my shoulder bone so weak that I could fracture it by just throwing a ball. He suggested that I do a biopsy right away. I wanted to wait till the Pakistan series but he insisted otherwise. He said that due to the deformity seen in my bicep bone, they were suspecting cancer.”Raza opted for surgery almost immediately, and only on Tuesday evening found out that it was an infection. “I went under the knife within the next 48 hours. They opened up my bicep by drilling the bone. They created a hole to take out some puss and red substance.”All of this was sent it for a biopsy, and it came back as negative. There was a type of infection but only last night the bone biopsy report ruled out the cancer,” he said.Raza said that his recovery would take a long time. He will definitely miss the ongoing Pakistan series. “I have been ruled out indefinitely. There’s no set date for my return. Of course this not being cancerous has suddenly fast-tracked some of it.”After the lab professor studies my MRI, I will apparently be on medication and jab for the next six months. We want to treat it aggressively so that I don’t get the infection again. I am very sure that I have three to five more weeks of doing nothing, if everything goes smoothly.Raza was thankful to the Zimbabwe Cricket officials including chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani and managing director Givemore Makoni, as well as the team physio Trevor Wambe who took special care of him. Raza also spoke to Dr Sohail Saleem from the PCB and Afghanistan physio Azeem Malik.”was very kind. He gave me a lot of strength but people like our physio Trevor Wambe helped me through this. He was by my side in Abu Dhabi, giving me a lot of time. When we got back to Zimbabwe, he ran around with me with the scans and tests.”When ZC found out what the doctors suggesting seeing my MRI, Givemore Makoni, the MD, and chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani got very worried. They were very supportive, even contacting other boards and telling me that they would send me anywhere else for better treatment.”My family, friends and team-mates were also very supportive. when the report came last night, it put me and my family at ease. There were tears of joy in my family,” he said.

Leeds could ruthlessly ditch Bamford in swoop for "powerful" £8.5m star

Leeds United have endured a difficult start to the season on the pitch in the Championship and League Cup, and off the pitch in the summer transfer window.

Off the field, Daniel Farke has had a lot to contend with as some of his key performers from last season have either left or are about to leave.

Glen Kamara, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville, who were all regular starters last season, have moved on to Rennes, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United respectively.

The German head coach is now set to lose Georginio Rutter as well, after Brighton activated a £40m release clause in the French wizard's contract.

Meanwhile, the Whites are chasing their first win of the 2024/25 campaign after two draws and one defeat in their first three matches of the season.

They lost 3-0 to Middlesbrough in the League Cup last week and that was sandwiched by draws with Portsmouth – 3-3 – and West Bromwich Albion – 0-0 – in the Championship.

The summer transfer window is still open until next Friday and this means that there is still time for Leeds to make further additions to bolster their squad.

Leeds' interest in £8.5m centre-forward

It should come as no surprise to learn that the West Yorkshire outfit are interested in adding more firepower to their squad, with Summerville and Rutter moving on from Elland Road this summer.

Journalist Marc Mechenoua recently claimed that Leeds are one of the teams eyeing up a possible swoop to sign Hammarby IF centre-forward Jusef Erabi.

The reporter stated that the Whites and fellow Championship side Norwich City, who just sold Adam Idah to Celtic, are both keen on signing the talented young striker.

It was revealed that the Swedish club are set to demand a fee of €10m (£8.5m) for the talented marksman, but it remains to be seen whether or not either of the English teams are prepared to pay that.

Mechenoua added that discussions are ongoing between the clubs and that Norwich and Leeds have both been informed of the price that they will need to pay to take him to the Championship this summer.

The Whites have also been linked with Sunderland star and former academy graduate Jack Clarke and Burnley gem Manuel Benson but Erabi is the only out-and-out centre-forward who appears to be an active target for the club.

If Leeds can strike a deal for him ahead of Norwich before the end of the summer transfer window then they could ruthlessly ditch Patrick Bamford.

Why Leeds should part ways with Patrick Bamford

The 30-year-old attacker has found himself behind Mateo Joseph, 20, in the pecking order at the start of this season and the addition of another striker would leave him as the third option in that position.

Per Capology, the former Middlesbrough star is the highest earner in the squad on £70k-per-week and that would not appear to be value for money if he is rarely contributing on the pitch, due to Joseph and Erabi possibly being ahead of him.

Despite his hefty wage packet and vast experience, at the age of 30, the former England international has not been a reliable performer on the pitch for Leeds.

Stretching back to last season, Bamford has now produced one goal and zero assists in his last ten appearances for the club in all competitions.

The left-footed marksman has not contributed with a goal or an assist in three outings so far this term, with his only start coming in the 3-0 defeat to his former club Boro.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Bamford made 33 appearances in the Championship for Farke and racked up eight goals and one assist, which means that he averaged less than one goal contribution every three matches on average.

The English centre-forward scored those eight goals from an Expected Goals tally of 9.52 and missed nine 'big chances', as he failed to make the most of his opportunities in front of goal.

Farke could now ruthlessly ditch Bamford, whether that is from the matchday squad or from the club completely if a team is willing to take him before the end of the window, by signing Erabi as his replacement.

Why Leeds should sign Jusef Erabi

The Whites should swoop to sign the Swedish youngster ahead of Norwich this month because he is a talented young player with potential, who could also make an immediate impact on the pitch.

Firstly, Erabi is a 21-year-old striker with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come, which means that Farke could work to improve his performance and increase his value in the future.

Patrick Bamford in action for Leeds United.

Whereas, Bamford is at the other end of his career – at 30 – and it does not appear as though he has much, if any, development left to go through.

Despite being 19/20 throughout the 2023 season, Erabi showed plenty of promise in his first season of regular first-team football in the Allsvenskan – scoring seven goals in 23 appearances and 13 starts.

As you can see in the table above, the Swedish ace carried that form over to the current campaign, with a return of five goals in nine starts in the division.

This means that the 21-year-old marksman has plundered 12 goals in 22 league starts in the Swedish top-flight since the start of last year, which is an impressive return given his age and inexperience.

Erabi, who was described as "powerful" and "clinical" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has yet to prove himself in England or in the Championship but his form for Hammarby is promising and suggests that he has the potential to be an excellent signing for Leeds.
