Richard Gleeson four-for sets up tense final-day battle

Dieter Klein puts up stubborn resistance with half-century as Leicestershire trail by 156 runs

Countrymen are wont to refer to a skulk of foxes but you will never find a side coached by Paul Nixon hiding itself away. Defeat is one thing; gutless capitulation another. So on an afternoon when Glamorgan went top of Division Two it was heartening to see another less fancied side taking to the barricades against the very warm title favourites.Everywhere you looked in the final two sessions of this day you found foxes whose courage would have inspired John Masefield. Desperately placed on 82 for 5 at lunch, a score which had some home fans pondering a three-day finish, Leicestershire’s lower order scrapped for every run and sold their wickets so dear that George Soros might have baulked at the price. The resistance was led by Dieter Klein, who was ninth out for 87, seven short of his career-best score, at the very point when his team had become favourites to save the follow-on. Klein was uncontroversially leg before to Richard Gleeson, and Leicestershire still needed another dozen runs to avoid one of cricket’s most unpalatable invitations when Mohammed Abbas was caught behind by Dane Vilas without scoring.Rather worse was to follow in the day’s very last knockings as nightwatchman-opener Chris Wright was bowled by Graham Onions, playing no shot, for nought. All the same, if Paul Horton’s men bat with the similar courage on the final day of this fine game they will collect five points for the draw and they will deserve them. We are set for another fine finish and another excellent advertisement for four-day cricket.Yet such a prospect seemed distant indeed at lunch after a morning session in which the visitors had lost five wickets and may even have been comforted by the notion that things could have been so much worse for them. Both openers and Neil Dexter were removed by Onions and Tom Bailey with the new ball in little more than the first half hour of the day and suddenly the game became an 11 v 1 contest. Every shot, however secure, was accompanied by a cacophony from the slips, whose comments rang out across the bitterly cold air. This was a session for the game’s devotees but they needed to be properly insulated. Those at the River End huddled together like long-tailed tits on a branch in winter. It looked as though each spectator was giving his fierce attention to the game; well, either that or rigor mortis had claimed another scalp. Gradually Mark Cosgrove and Colin Ackermann began to make something of the innings, both batsmen punching fours through midwicket when the seamers searched too eagerly for an attacking length. It remained cold. One fellow was seen unpacking a picnic and was generally judged to have lost his wits. This was a rug and Bovril day. After an hour’s resistance Ackermann drove at Gleeson but only edged a catch to Vilas. Bury-born Harry Dearden lasted half an hour for his two runs but edged Liam Livingstone’s final ball before lunch to Keaton Jennings at slip. The players went in and the sun came out. Aigburth became cricket’s answer to the weather house.Lancashire made further breakthroughs in the afternoon session but never as frequently as their supporters expected. The visitors’ determination was epitomised by a 20-year-old debutant, Harry Swindells, who put on 50 for the sixth wicket with Mark Cosgrove. Swindells is slim, innocent and athletic, three adjectives which are rarely used in connection with Cosgrove. Yet the pair combined well and repulsed every Lancastrian challenge. The youngster’s first runs were edgy in both respects but he soon warmed to his new environment and seemed unfazed by the yakking of Lancashire’s close fielders. Indeed, Cosgrove was the first to depart when Onions brought one back off the pitch and had him lbw for 70. Swindells’ first innings in his new surroundings lasted another half hour and he had accumulated a very respectable 37 when the ball ballooned off bat and pad and Keaton Jennings plunged forward from short leg to grab the catch which gave Livingstone his second wicket. At that point Leicestershire were 150 for 7 and Lancashire had re-established their ascendancy. But the main battle had yet to be joined. It was led by Klein but he was ably assisted by Callum Parkinson, the twin brother of Lancashire’s Matthew. For while Matt may be the better spinner, Callum has clearly secured a monopoly of the family’s batting genes. In company with Klein, he added 119 for his team’s eighth wicket. Neither the tea interval nor the taking of the new ball disturbed the pair; indeed it required a slightly generous leg before decision in favour of Gleeson to get rid of the other Parky for 37 when Leicestershire still needed 31 to avoid batting again tonight.Lancashire’s bowlers had become frustrated in the afternoon; perhaps they, too, were considering the attractions of a day off. But Gleeson recovered his discipline sufficiently to finish with 4 for 58 and set us up for a tense battle tomorrow. That is, if frostbite doesn’t get us all first; but fingers are overrated anyway.

Rangers monster who won 10 duels starred alongside Matondo & Cantwell

Glasgow Rangers moved to within goal difference of the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

The Light Blues secured all three points thanks to goals from Rabbi Matondo and Todd Cantwell, either side of an equaliser from Bojan Miovski, as Philippe Clement's side moved to 58 points – level with Celtic ahead of their game on Wednesday.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Whilst the two goalscorers will get the plaudits, and rightly so, for their strikes to win the match for the Scottish giants, they were not the only impressive performers for the Light Blues.

Central defender John Souttar was brought into the starting line-up for the injured Leon Balogun and showed what he is all about with an excellent display for the Gers, as he was the real hero on the night.

Matondo and Cantwell's match-winning contributions

Ross McCausland took advantage of a slip from a defender and drove towards the box before lashing an effort at Kelle Roos, who was forced to parry the ball straight to Matondo for the opening goal.

However, the Welsh whiz then missed a huge opportunity to make it 2-0 before half-time. He skipped past two defenders with a brilliant piece of skill but took far too long to get his shot away, with Cyriel Dessers in space to his right, and slipped at the vital moment.

Cantwell was the eventual match-winner as the former Norwich City star was the quickest to react to a save from Roos to bundle the ball into the back of the net on the rebound.

The English whiz also created two chances for his teammates but did lose 100% (3/3) of his duels throughout the game, as Aberdeen found it too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

John Souttar's defensive dominance

Souttar's centre-back partner, Connor Goldson, had a nightmare for the away side's goal as Miovski got the better of him far too easily from a long ball but the Scotland international avoided any such issues.

The former Hearts titan was colossal at the back for the Gers as he dealt with the majority of the problems that Aberdeen caused through their attackers.

As you can see in the table above, the Light Blues monster dominated the opposition in physical battles as he won two of his three on the deck and eight of his 12 in the air.

His ability in the air was needed towards the end of the match as the Dons piled the pressure on after Dujon Sterling's red card reduced the hosts to ten men, as the towering defender won his duels to prevent flick-ons and knock-downs around the box.

Souttar was also composed in his use of the ball. He completed 87% of his attempted passes (74/85), six of his ten long passes, and 100% of his attempted dribbles (1/1).

The 27-year-old enforcer's vital defensive work played a key role in the win as the Gers won by a slender one-goal margin, which meant that any slip-up at the back could have resulted in points being dropped.

Instead of slip-ups, Souttar's footing was assured throughout and that is why he was the real hero of the night for Clement with his outstanding performance, starring alongside Matondo and Cantwell.

Surging Pakistan look to sustain momentum against Afghanistan

Pakistan need to win to give themselves the best chance of upstaging England and clinching a semi-final berth

The Preview by Umar Farooq28-Jun-20192:53

Hussey: Beating Pakistan can bring great joy for Afghanistan fans

Big PictureAfghanistan came with a promise to upset at least two teams in this World Cup but they have spent their campaign dogged by one issue after another, on and off the field, and are winless in seven games. They are rooted to the bottom of the table, with the high point of their campaign the game against India, where they came within two blows of a historic victory. However, they slipped back into old ways in the game against Bangladesh, in which they fell short by 62 runs. They will now play for pride against Pakistan, a neighbouring country with which the rivalry is more intense than just a cricketing one.The Pakistan camp, in the meantime, has suddenly found its best form, buoyed after inflicting a first defeat upon New Zealand. Their World Cup dreams are well and truly alive, and comparisons to the 1992 World Cup campaign have now reached fever pitch. All of that will fade, however, if Pakistan fail to beat Afghanistan and Bangladesh, two sides who did not play the 1992 version of this competition. There are still lots of ifs and buts but for now the proposition is simple – Pakistan needs to win their remaining two games to have a realistic chance of a place in the semi-finals.Afghanistan on the other hand are living a dream in playing the World Cup a second time – a decade earlier, that would have been hardly within the realms of probability. Their bowling has given them a belief and confidence enough to pose a threat to any batting line-up, but the batting hasn’t quite lived up to that standard. Even when they did get close to inflicting an upset or two, the absence of a finishing touch was notable. However, they should remember they beat Pakistan in a warm-up game in Bristol before the start of the tournament, and coach Phil Simmons will be assuring them they can repeat the feat in the World Cup proper.Form guideAfghanistan LLLLL (Last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WWLLWIn the spotlightPakistan have already offloaded Shoaib Malik and brought in Haris Sohail. The move proved vital in making the middle order work and gave much needed stability to the batting line-up. The spotlight remains on another senior hand: with Mohammad Hafeez stuttering and unable to capitalise on his decent start, he will feel the pressure. He fell to part-time spinners in three of Pakistan’s last four games, playing poor shots, requiring his team-mates to bail the side out.Rashid Khan struggled to pick wickets•Getty Images

Rashid Khan has been off-colour, despite his high billing. The legspinner has averaged 78.5 with four wickets in six bowling innings so far. In his ODI career, he averages under 18 and he was meant to be a key campaigner for Afghanistan this tournament. But ever since the assault he suffered against England, conceding more runs than any bowler ever has at a World Cup, he appears to have lost confidence. At Leeds, the conditions seem unfavourable for spinners, as they average 45.7 with an economy of 5.4 in the last five completed ODIs at the venue. Can Rashid overcome?Team newsPakistan wouldn’t want to break up their winning combination, so an unchanged team is expected.Pakistan (probable): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Haris Sohail, 6 Sarfaraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Shaheen AfridiAfghanistan have tried almost every possible combination, with 16 players used. One change here and there in the batting or bowling hasn’t made a significant difference; they dropped Aftab Alam to recall Dawat Zardan in the last game against Bangladesh, but the bowler conceded 64 in nine overs for one wicket. Samiullah Shinwari in place of Hazratullah Zazai made a difference, as the batsman scored a useful 49 at No. 6 to offer much needed resistance. They are most likely to take on Pakistan unchanged from their previous outing in Southampton.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Gulbadin Naib (capt), 2 Rahmat Shah, 3 Hashmatullah Shahidi, 4 Asghar Afghan, 5 Samiullah Shinwari, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Najibullah Zadran, 8 Ikram Alikhil (wk), 9 Rashid Khan, 10 Dawlat Zadran, 11 Mujeeb Ur RahmanStrategy punts Najibullah Zadran averaged 51.5 runs per dismissal and struck his runs at 101 per 100 balls since 2018. It wasn’t, therefore, a surprise to see him score heavily in the first two innings (51 against Australia and 43 against Sri Lanka) despite batting at No. 7. Him coming up higher in the order could offer stability but he seemingly fell prey to mismanagement, being pushing down in the order to play at Nos. 7 and 8 when the game is all but over. He was also dropped from one game. He is more than a slogger, averaging 57.7 in overs 11-40. His strike rate since 2018 against pace is 98.8 and against spinners, its 101. Time for a promotion? Mohammad Hafeez’s demotion from No. 4 to 6 may create a difference if Haris Sohail is promoted to No. 4 to bat alongside Babar Azam. Besides, Hafeez is effective as an improvisor and, since 2017, averages 64.67 with a strike rate of 137.5 between overs 41-50. Pakistan need an assured presence in the death overs to push their total beyond par to complement their bowlers, so the switch could be a win-win.Pitch and conditionsIt’s expected to be the hottest day of the year, with the temperature exceeding 30 C. The pitch is expected to be slow, but recent games here have had fast bowlers achieve success, which should play into Pakistan’s hands.Stats and trivia Pakistan and Afghanistan have played each other three times, with Afghanistan yet to win Pakistan’s win percentage at Leeds is 44.4%, having won four and lost five matches Mohammad Hafeez needs 63 runs for 500 runs in World Cups Samiullah Shinwari needs five wickets for 50 wickets in ODIs

No Jackson & "incredible" ace starts in predicted Chelsea lineup v Man City

Chelsea are one of the most entertaining sides to watch in the Premier League this season; if you're neutral, that is.

One week, they might lose 4-1 to Liverpool and 4-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers, only to win at Villa Park and Selhurst Park 3-1 the following week.

Mauricio Pochettino has a talented core of promising youngsters at Stamford Bridge, and while that might be good for the long-term, it has hindered them this season as they currently sit in tenth, with the eighth-best attack and the 13th-best defence.

However, everything can change off the back of a great result, and the Pensioners have the chance to shock the rest of the league this evening as they travel to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

If it's anything like the pair's last meeting, fans will be in for a treat, and with a win in the previous game, Pochettino won't look to make more than three personal changes to the XI from Monday.

1 GK – Đorđe Petrović

One of the first names on the teamsheet currently is Serbian goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

The 24-year-old has been the team's number one since Robert Sanchez injured his wrist against Everton just before Christmas.

However, with some reasonably impressive performances between the sticks, he might just keep his place in the team, even with the Spaniard now supposedly back to full fitness.

2 RB – Malo Gusto

Another player in the team due to an injury is French right-back Malo Gusto.

The former Lyon ace was signed in the summer to act as cover for the increasingly injury-prone Reece James, and while he's had some shakey games this season, notably against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he's generally been a solid member of the squad.

He's started six of the last seven Premier League games, so it would be a big shock not to see him in action from the first minute against City.

3 CB – Thiago Silva

Axel Disasi will also almost certainly keep his place in the side, as the Frenchman has been reasonably impressive in the last couple of games.

He certainly hasn't had the smoothest of rides since joining the club in the summer, but considering he has started 92% of league games under Poch, it seems he has the manager's backing.

4 CB – Levi Colwill

ronald-araujo-levi-colwill-liverpool-opinion

The second centre-back spot brings with it the first change in the lineup, as Cobham graduate Levi Colwill comes in for the injured Thiago Silva.

The young Englishman came off the bench in the 61st minute against Palace on Monday night, so he should be fit enough to start at the Etihad.

A pairing of the 20-year-old "Rolls-Royce", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, and Disasi is likely the Blue's best chance of holding the marauding Erling Haaland at bay this evening.

5 LB – Ben Chilwell

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

With Colwill playing in his natural position of centre-back, Pochettino will almost certainly start Ben Chilwell at left-back.

Since recovering from his hamstring injury, the England international has started the previous three Premier League games, and while he certainly hasn't been at his best, he is Chelsea's best left-back.

6 DM – Moises Caicedo

Moises Caicedo

The first midfielder in this XI is the £115m man himself, Moises Caicedo.

It has been a tough first season in west London for the Ecuadorian international, but he has shown glimpses of quality here and there, and while he was underwhelming on Monday night, he'll start this evening.

Poch has started the 22-year-old in 83% of league games this season, and he started for Brighton & Hove Albion last season when they drew with City at the Amex.

7 DM – Enzo Fernández

Starting alongside Caicedo is the man of the moment, Enzo Fernández.

Like his midfield partner, the World Cup winner has not had the easiest of rides since joining the Blues last year, but in recent games, he has stepped up a level.

He bossed Villa off the park in the FA Cup and scored an unreal free-kick, and while he wasn't quite as effective against Palace, he still scored another goal.

8 RM – Cole Palmer

The right-wing brings with it the second change in the lineup as Noni Madueke is benched for Cole Palmer to come in and fill the vacancy.

Madueke failed to deliver against Palace, and it was his mistake that led directly to the opening goal.

On the other hand, Palmer was quite impressive at Selhurst Park – delivering two assists – but considering the quality of the opponent tonight, it makes sense to try to bring him into the action more by starting him slightly deeper.

9 CAM – Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher Chelsea

Keeping his place as the most attacking midfielder in the XI is Conor Gallagher.

The fan-favourite has been reasonably impressive for most of the season and has finally added goals to his game with a strike against Aston Villa in the FA Cup and another couple against Palace on Monday.

The Englishman has started 96% of league games this season, so it's a sure bet he'll start this evening.

10 LM – Raheem Sterling

The third change to the team comes out on the left as Nicolas Jackson makes way for the experienced Raheem Sterling.

Jackson was impressive against Villa last week but was rather underwhelming against Palace on Monday – making just 26 touches – and with chances likely to be in short supply this evening, it makes sense to drop him to the bench.

Moreover, the "incredible" Sterling, as dubbed by former manager Guardiola, was unreal in the last game against City.

He scored Chelsea's second goal of the game and was given a 9/10 for his performance by the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella.

Zimbabwe not to travel to Bangladesh for T20I tri-series

The FICA has urged the ICC to consider the effect the suspension will have on Zimbabwe’s players who have ‘endured years of hardship under the previous board’

Zimbabwe will not be able to stage their domestic competitions in the coming season, or fulfil their Future Tours Programme (FTP) itinerary and other international obligations, including the tour to Bangladesh for a T20I tri-series that was to include Afghanistan in September, according to a statement released by Zimbabwe Cricket on Saturday. For their part, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has suggested that Zimbabwe’s participation in the tri-series is up to ZC, and they themselves remain fluid in their response to the situation. If Zimbabwe do not travel, as seems likely, the tri-series will turn into a bilateral affair.Zimbabwe’s suspension from the ICC this week has also jeopardised both the men and women’s teams’ participation in the T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019.”The ICC had also awarded Zimbabwe the right to host another global qualifier event next, but that now hangs in the balance,” ZC’s statement read.”In all this, players and staff are bearing the brunt of the standoff and they might be forced to go for months or forever without their salaries and match fees,” the statement continued.Sikandar Raza had said that the ICC’s actions had brought an end to both his and several other cricket careers, while allrounder Solomon Mire has already announced his retirement from international cricket.Zimbabwe’s isolation has also thrown the women’s side, which won the Africa Region T20 qualifying tournament in May, into disarray. Their tour to Ireland was cancelled at the last minute, while it appears impossible that they will appear at the T20 Qualifier tournament in Scotland, starting next month.”A chance for a ticket to different life, for millions of women out there in Zimbabwe,” national captain Mary-Anne Musonda tweeted. “For generations of girls and women to come. Vanished in 3 weeks. Okay. Life. I’m sorry Lady Chevrons. I led. I tried.”Meanwhile, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has urged the ICC to consider the effect that Zimbabwe’s suspension will have on the players in that country.”The Zimbabwean players have endured years of hardship under the previous board of ZC,” FICA executive chairman Tony Irish said. “This has included many instances of non-payment and frequent breaches of their playing contracts. We have asked ICC to consider some mechanism to enable player contracts to be honoured despite the unfortunate suspension of the new board of ZC.”Some of the domestic players in Zimbabwe live a hand-to-mouth existence, and there is an important ‘human’ element to this situation which we believe needs to be addressed.”ZC has offered to submit a new financial audit and set aside their differences with the Sports and Recreation Commission, which in June suspended the entire ZC board and set in motion the chain of events that led to Zimbabwe’s suspension, “in an effort to find amicable solutions that will avert expulsion and the total demise of the game”.”We would like to see our teams playing again as soon as possible and the ZC board is ready to cooperate with the SRC and other stakeholders to get Zimbabwe back to operating within the confines of the ICC statutes again,” ZC’s statement read.
