Leeds fans delighted to see Wiedwald leave

Leeds United confirmed on Tuesday that German goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald had left the club for Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 28-year-old joined Leeds from Werder Bremen in last summer’s transfer window, and started the season as the Championship outfit’s number one.

Wiedwald lost his place in the team following a string of errors, however, which led to criticism from a number of Leeds supporters.

It became clear in the early stages of 2018 that Wiedwald would be leaving Elland Road this summer in search of pastures new, and it seems that Leeds have agreed to rip up the goalkeeper’s contract to allow him to move on.

The former Germany Under-20 international arrived with a big reputation, but the move to Leeds, who are now under the management of Marcelo Bielsa, simply did not work out, and his exit makes sense for all involved.

McCarthy signs new four-year deal, Southampton fans react

Alex McCarthy has likely cemented himself as Southampton’s first-choice goalkeeper after signing a new contract at the club.

The Premier League club confirmed via their official website on Wednesday that the 28-year-old has put pen to paper on a fresh four-year deal.

In December last season, McCarthy overtook Fraser Forster in the pecking order, and after this contract news was announced, questions have been raised over his teammate’s future.

During the 2017-18 campaign, McCarthy made 23 appearances in all competitions, conceding 29 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.

In the latter stages of the season when it looked as though the Saints would drop into the Championship, the shot-stopper pulled off some crucial saves to help Mark Hughes and the team stay afloat.

McCarthy’s form sparked transfer rumours of a possible exit, but Southampton fans can now relax.

On Twitter, plenty of the club’s following posted their thoughts on the news, and it is safe to say that everyone is delighted.

"The Jamie Vardy Stories that nobody hears about" – The Underdog’s academy

Meet the man who has created his own football academy for promising young footballers that are looking for a career pathway in to professional football.

Academy president, Morris Pagniello, believes that “only one percent” of young players make it down the conventional academy route meaning that a lot of promising young footballers become discouraged from pursuing their dream career.

To stop this from happening Pagniello has started up the Genova International School of Soccer (GISS).

GISS is a residential academy that provides a full program to aid player development for young footballers from ‘under developed football nations’.

The academy provides training of the highest professional standards for players that don’t have a clear pathway to becoming a footballer.

Over 82 players who have joined or passed through the GISS Residential Academy doors have signed to professional clubs in the past 6 years.

Nottingham Forest fans delighted by arrival of former Liverpool defender Jack Robinson

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka has been in desperate need for a left-back, and he finally has one.

On Saturday, the Championship outfit announced via their official website that Jack Robinson has joined the club on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old, who began his career at Liverpool, spent the last four years at Queens Park Rangers, apart from during the 2014-15 campaign where he was at Huddersfield Town on loan.

Robinson was a promising talent at Anfield, but he was unable to hold down a regular spot in the first team.

He did, though, win the League Cup with the Reds in 2012, but he now finds himself taking on a new challenge at the City Ground.

Robinson, who made 34 appearances for QPR last season, has penned a two-year contract.

The deal was a no-brainer from Forests’s point of view given that Robinson was available for free.

Judging by the reaction on Twitter, the fans are delighted by the news, and some think the left-back’s arrival has boosted the club’s Premier League promotion hopes.

Arsenal fans are absolutely fuming, admit they’re not winning anything

As things stand, Arsenal are set to be the only club across Europe’s top five leagues to have failed to sign an outfield player this summer.

Ok, so we’re not surprised about it, but you can forgive the Emirates faithful for being extremely angry with what’s going on at their club at the moment. Or rather what’s NOT going on.

The Gunners have been quiet all summer and have only signed Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech this summer and despite being linked with several of the world’s best strikers, look likely to be left with a front line of Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and makeshift ‘striker’ Theo Walcott until January at the very earliest.

Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to vent their anger towards Arsene Wenger, while everyone else have taken the opportunity to laugh at the Gunners, who haven’t exactly looked lively during the opening four weeks of the new Premier League season.

Here are some of the best tweets…

The Chelsea tactic that isn’t working for Manchester United

Chelsea’s defensive issues this season have been nothing short of catastrophic, with last season’s impregnable back four looking like one of the shakiest rearguards in the Premier League so far in 2015/16.

With Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry the two first-team players receiving the most criticism for their displays, one defensive member of the contingent continues to hold his head up despite the poor showings of the team. Cesar Azpilicueta is one of the most understated players in a star-studded group at Stamford Bridge, and there is an argument to suggest that the Spaniard is one of the most important stars at Jose Mourinho’s disposal.

The former Osasuna and Marseille full-back’s impressive performances are all the more significant given the fact that he has been operating at left-back for the last year or more, playing out of position to help the team. A right-back by trade, Azpilicueta has looked equally as comfortable on the other flank and continues to be one of the most committed and able defenders in the Premier League. This ploy of playing a right-back on the opposing wing is something that has been forced on Manchester United to some degree following the unfortunate, and sickening, leg break of first choice Old Trafford left-back Luke Shaw.

With the England international set to miss the remainder of the campaign as he looks to rehabilitate, Louis van Gaal has a decision to make over just who will fill in while the ex-Southampton defender is unavailable. Despite the fact that both Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are fully capable of fitting in at left-back, the experienced Dutch trainer seems committed to keeping this duo as options at centre-half. As such, summer addition, and usual right-back, Matteo Darmian and Ashley Young have found themselves at left-back in recent games in an effort to nullify the impact of Shaw’s injury.

The Italy international does have some experience of playing on the left from his Torino days, but there is no questioning the fact that he is more comfortable and effective operating from his natural right-back position. Young, a winger by trade, filled in at times as a wing-back or full-back last season, but is still to fully convince the Old Trafford faithful of his merits as a defender.

While Chelsea’s experiment of fielding Azpilicueta on the opposite flank may have reaped dividends, the early signs are that United will not have the same level of success with right-footed pair Darmian or Young in a makeshift role. In United’s last game, a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Darmian started in his natural right-back role, but was tormented by two-goal hero Alexis Sanchez and subsequently substituted at half-time.

Young did not fare much better at left-back against Aaron Ramsey and positionally suspect. A liability more than an asset.

Given the fact that Rojo has spent the majority of his international career as a left-back for Argentina and Blind is naturally left-footed and played in the role excellently at times last season, ending the experiment and playing one of these two in the trouble position surely makes more sense.

Do Newcastle have what it takes to avoid the drop this season?

After recently beating both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League outings this month – and subsequently failing to win against bottom placed Aston Villa on home turf last time out – the St. James’ Park faithful certainly seem to be playing host to a rather unpredictable outfit right in the here and now.

The 2015/16 campaign has so far turned out to be a rather tiresome one for the Tyneside support in truth. Although recent results may have very well raised the spirits in and around the team of late, major question-marks still nonetheless surround the managerial exploits of Steve McClaren and his supposed inability to get the best out of his players.

So then, with roughly half of the current season already recorded and documented for future onlookers to behold – are Newcastle looking set to avoid the once impending threat of relegation this season, or do more tough times ultimately await the Magpies in 2015/16?

[ffc-gal cat=”newcastle-united” no=”5″]

Well, as the Tynesiders currently sit just outside realms of the dreaded relegation zone, maybe there is, in fact, hope for Steve McClaren after all. His side may represent one of the least capable outfits operating in the Premier League at the moment, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t still three worse teams also in and aroundt the relegation dog-fight.

Each of Sunderland, Aston Villa and potentially either of AFC Bournemouth or Norwich City, arguably represent inferior starting XI’s that what Newcastle United presently have at their disposal. The St. James’ hierarchy famously spent close to £50million on new players this summer, so Steve McClaren’s side really should be too good to go down.

And whilst such an analysis doesn’t always come up trumps, the Magpies do in-fact possess enough technical quality to get them out of their current predicament.

The likes of Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum seem to have what it takes to successfully score goals in the English top-flight, Siem de Jong could very well make a meaningful impact upon finally returning to full fitness for Newcastle this season – and although the Magpies back-line has traditionally been the cause for great concern down at St. James in seasons past – Fabricio Coloccini and co. have nonetheless improved their overall organisational levels in the club’s last few league outings at least.

Yes, Steve McClaren doesn’t quite seem suited to the massive task currently on his hands, with several of his first team players looking equally out of their depth within the Premier League in 2015/16 – but as several other English teams have also failed to excel in the goal-scoring department this term – Newcastle may eventually find themselves with an escape route from the bottom three by the time the current season comes to a close.

The former England boss will nonetheless have to improve the overall mental toughness of his unpredictable outfit however, for when the Magpies have invariably gone behind this season, McClaren’s side don’t exactly portray all the hallmarks of a team confident of coming back and claiming all three points. Barring a few isolated exceptions of course, the Newcastle players have let their collective heads drop far too often this season to be considered genuine top-ten hopefuls.

In the end, it remains incredibly difficult to assess Newcastle’s chances of staying up in 2015/16. This is a team that have underperformed for so long now, it really is becoming somewhat difficult to remember just how impressive the determined Magpies once were many moons ago.

However, because Steve McClaren’s side seemingly have what it takes to survive the drop on paper this term, perhaps that will ultimately be enough for Newcastle when the 2015/16 campaign finally comes to an end. If Mike Ashley sees fit to spend once again this January, the St. James’ faithful could very well experience some all-round improved fortunes throughout the remainder of the season.

10 Tweets that best summed up Watford vs Man City

Manchester City fans on social media have expressed their delight at the fact their team came from behind to beat a stubborn Watford away at Vicarage Road. Here are the TEN tweets that best sum up Watford vs Manchester City.

The title chasing Manchester outfit giants were second best for swathes of the encounter and fell behind to an Aleksandar Kolarov own goal after old foe Ben Watson produced a tricky corner.

The Serbian came under fire for putting through his own net just after the interval, though the exploits of teammates Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero spared his blushes.

Toure drew the visitors level with a wonderful finish to connect with Kolarov’s corner with a thumping volley, while a pacey attack led to Aguero nodding home with an excellent header.

Now, fans are expressing their delight in what could be a major boost to their title assault having fallen six points behind leaders Arsenal following their 1-0 win over Newcastle United earlier in the day.

Gutting for the home side, who were more than holding their own.

Man United boss adamant of title challenge following 1-0 Liverpool win

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is adamant that his side are still in the title race following their 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, Mirror reports.

Van Gaal’s side were second best for most of the fixture, but the Merseyside club couldn’t break the deadlock and were punished when Wayne Rooney’s half volley found the back of the net in the 78th minute.

The England international is on a fine goal-scoring run and with league leaders Arsenal only managing a draw against Stoke City, Van Gaal believes the Red Devils can still catch up to the Gunners in the second half of the campaign.

He said: “To beat Liverpool is always important, and today it was important because our competitors have lost points.

“When you get it like this, then maybe it is seven points off the top of the table – and seven points you can oversee that. That’s what I’m thinking.”

Regarding the title race, he added: “It depends on results. We are seven points behind and there are a lot of matches still to go. We started 2016 very well with a lot of wins, and we haven’t lost.

“This game shall give a big boost to the players, fans, everybody at Manchester United. We have to continue of course and it’s not so easy, but we showed we can do it – we have shown every week we can do it.”

On the other hand, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was irritated that his team were unable to finish off their chances, while also criticising their lack of awareness in defending set pieces.

“It’s really bad. It’s a derby and in a derby you only have one job to do – to win it,” he said.

“That’s the only possibility to be satisfied after the game. United at this moment will be happy. You can talk about their performance and it wasn’t that good, but they can be happy.

“It’s frustrating, because there were many things that were good, but our finishing was not good, because we would have scored a goal. And three mistakes around their goal were too much, against a team of the quality of Man Utd was too much.

“The set-piece, we didn’t defend it well, we reorganised before it.”

Next weekend, Liverpool will travel to Carrow Road in their next Premier League fixture, while Man United host Southampton at Old Trafford.

Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 27: Forecasting Good Fixtures

Hello internet! Welcome to another edition of Forecasting Good Fixtures, in which we try to predict which clubs will have an easier set of games that could increase the probability for points in our Fantasy Premier League teams.

Last weekend we had some incredible action in the English top flight, with Arsenal breaking Leicester City hearts with a last-gasp winner in the 94th minute, while Tottenham have become real title contenders after beating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad.

Also, Manchester United were their normal mediocre selves by almost being outplayed by 19th place Sunderland, whose local rivals Newcastle United were dismantled 5-1 by Chelsea.

While there may not be any Premier League action this weekend, we will take a look at which teams to consider ahead of Gameweek 27, which as FOUR TEAMS without a game due to cup duties. These are the definite clubs to avoid for now, but which teams have players we should all be snapping up?

So without further ado, here are Three Teams with Good Fixtures ahead of Gameweek 27.

Leicester City

After their 2-1 loss to Arsenal, many are starting to believe that Leicester City’s fairy-tale ending could fall short of becoming Premier League champions, but the Foxes are set to go on a very winnable run of games that could make their dream come true.

Claudio Ranieri’s men play Norwich (Home), West Bromwich Albion (Home), Watford (Away), Newcastle United (Home), and Crystal Palace (Away) in their next five… with the home games extremely enticing in regards to Fantasy points.

And the team have a plethora of players to choose from, starting with Kasper Schmeichel (4.9) in goal, defenders Robert Huth (4.6) and Christian Fuchs (4.8), star midfielder Riyad Mahrez (7.2), and the league’s top scorer Jamie Vardy (7.5). Three of them for this run-in could be a very decent option.

Tottenham Hotspur

Previously considered as an outsider to finish in the Top Four, Tottenham have now blossomed under Mauricio Pochettino into one of the most solid teams in the Premier League this season, and have become real challengers in the title race.

And like Leicester, the Lilywhites have a great chance to pick up the points in the upcoming games, although they do have a crunch clash against the Gunners in Gameweek 29. Spurs play Swansea (Home), West Ham United (Away), Arsenal (Home), Aston Villa (Away), and Bournemouth (Home) in their next five.

West Ham could also provide a tricky test, but with their form, not many will bet against Tottenham at the moment.

A smart investment could be Kevin Wimmer (4.6), who will deputise for the injured Jan Vertonghen for at least another few months. Christian Eriksen (8.5) and Dele Alli (6.0) offers good midfield options, while Harry Kane (10.1) is their main man up front.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth were the fairy-tale team that came up from the Championship last year, and although they’ve held their own in the Premier League this term, they are still firmly in the relegation battle four points away from 18th place.

However, if they are to stay up, their next run of somewhat easier fixtures will be games they will need points in to survive the drop, with the Cherries playing Watford (Away), Southampton (Home), Newcastle United (Away) and Swansea (Home) in their next four. The Saints resolute defence may hold off Bournemouth’s charges, but the other fixtures are extremely winnable games indeed.

Charlie Daniels (4.7) is the pick of the bunch, with the defender supplying three assists in the last five games, scoring one goal. You can also consider Benik Afobe (6.1) for the striking role, but we believe there are better centre forward options elsewhere.
