Joe Denly and Matt Henry put Kent on course for victory

Kent played positively to make up for lost time although Richard Gleeson managed to follow Matt Henry with career-best figures

ECB Reporters Network06-Sep-20181:55

Surrey make it eight and promotion race hots up

ScorecardKent will need to mop up Northamptonshire’s seven remaining wickets on the final day at Canterbury to secure their eighth win of the Specsavers County Championship campaign having reduced the visitors to 54 for 3 by stumps on day three.Batting for the final time in the match and facing an improbable victory target of 320, Northamptonshire started their second innings as they had their first and were soon deep in trouble against the pace of Matt Henry, who has already taken nine wickets in the match – including a career-best seven-wicket haul.Left-hander Ben Curran followed one going across him to be caught behind then, five overs later, his opening partner Luke Procter went leg before to one that darted in off the seam to give Henry his ninth of the match.Kent’s first-change seamer Grant Stewart swung one through the gate of Ricardo Vasconcelos to peg back off stump, but Alex Wakely and Richard Levi dug in to bat out the remaining 10 overs through to the close. They require a further 266 on the fourth day for an unlikely win.Kent had started their second innings with a slender overall lead of 32 and extended their advantage to 55 when a double-wicket maiden from Ben Sanderson briefly altered the course of the morning session. He had Sean Dickson snaffled at second slip then, three balls later, Kent’s experiment to promote Grant Stewart backfired, when the allrounder glanced a catch to the keeper to depart without scoring. With licence to keep the game moving, Kent’s third-wicket partners Zak Crawley and Joe Denly continued to go for their strokes in adding 111 in 25 overs either side of lunch. But, after posting a 72-ball 50, Crawley became bogged down after the interval and departed leg before for 63 when an in-swinging Brett Hutton yorker hit him flush on the boot. The impressive Richard Gleeson then enjoyed the day’s second double-wicket maiden. After clipping Denly’s off stump with an excellent leg-cutter that sent him packing when only 19 runs short of his fourth championship ton of the summer, Gleeson extended Daniel Bell-Drummond’s batting woes by trapping him leg before when off balance for a third-ball duck.Heino Kuhn fell for a cameo 34 just before tea, leg before when working across the line against Gleeson, then, soon after tea and with Kent 287 ahead, the same bowler induced Darren Stevens to chop on.Harry Podmore followed suit to give Gleeson a deserved five-wicket haul in only his fourth appearance of the season, which became a career-best of 6 for 79 when Henry, in trying to drop his hands to a short one, gloved a catch through to the keeper.Amongst the carnage, Sam Billings, the Kent captain, scored his first half-century of the season in his fifth appearance from 63 balls and with seven fours, beating his paltry season’s best of 29 before becoming last man out for 56, after an extraordinary hook from well outside off stump that flew straight to first slip.Kent needed only 25 minutes at the start of the day to mop of Northamptonshire’s two remaining first innings wickets.Henry had Richard Gleeson caught by Ivan Thomas at square leg to end a ninth-wicket stand of 49 to give Henry career-best figures of 7 for 42. Thomas then polished off the innings in Henry’s next over, running out Hutton with a direct hit from square leg, allowing Henry to walk off with the match ball.

Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada complete South Africa's 3-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe

The two quicks picked up three wickets each before fifties from Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen steered South Africa home

The Report by Liam Brickhill06-Oct-2018AFP

Reeza Hendricks added to his debut hundred with an assured 66 and Heinrich Klaasen registered his maiden ODI fifty as South Africa chased down Zimbabwe’s 228 with four overs to spare in Paarl. On the best pitch so far seen in the series, South Africa’s frontline bowlers shared the spoils to bowl Zimbabwe out three balls short of a full innings. An inexperienced batting line-up then put in their best performance of the series as South Africa strolled to a four-wicket win.Dale Steyn’s successful return to ODI cricket continued and he led the charge with 3 for 29 in the afternoon, once again bowling with menacing pace. South Africa’s opening pair of Hendricks and Aiden Markram then shared in an opening stand of 75, setting the platform for Klaasen’s 59 and the unbeaten 25 from Khaya Zondo that guided South Africa to a 3-0 series victory. While Klaasen marshalled the latter end of South Africa’s chase, Hendricks and Markram were in complete control throughout the Powerplay, aided by erratic lines from Zimbabwe with the new ball. Tendai Chatara fed Markram’s whips through the leg side and then overcorrected on the off to leak five boundaries in his first two overs.Hamilton Masakadza cycled through his seamers and then turned to his spinners as early as the eighth over. But on a benign pitch the visiting attack lost their bite. There was accuracy, but not deception from Sean Williams and Brandon Mavuta tried to do a little too much with his variations of legspin, losing control of his length. Hendricks swatted boundaries whenever the young legspinner erred, while Markram skipped out to hit Williams twice down the ground before he was unluckily given out lbw for 42 – there is no DRS in this series, and Umpire Chris Gaffaney missed an inside edge.Faf du Plessis, returning to action after recovering from the shoulder injury he picked up in the field against Sri Lanka in August, eased himself in with a couple of confident strokes off the front foot but then picked out Craig Ervine at midwicket, pulling at a Mavuta half-tracker.The dismissal of the South African captain in the 20th over allowed Zimbabwe to build a little pressure in the field, and they might have had an opening when Hendricks was trapped in front of his stumps by Donald Tiripano for 66. Klaasen made sure they didn’t. Playing the pull with particular power, he raced to fifty from 59 balls and added 66 with Zondo to put South Africa within a couple of shots of victory.Klaasen laced two of fours off Kyle Jarvis, but fell attempting a third. Phehlukwayo then fell for a nine-ball duck as Zimbabwe delayed the inevitable, only for Steyn to arrive at the crease and thump the third ball he faced down the ground to end the match. On a pitch not dissimilar from those South Africa might expect to find at the World Cup in England next year, the hosts had finally flexed their batting bench strength a little. They also got the chance to try out an exciting combination with the ball, with Steyn and Imran Tahir sharing the new ball duties. While there was very little turn for Tahir, his variations of wrist and pace kept the Zimbabwean openers guessing, and soon did for Solomon Mire. When Craig Ervine feathered his third ball, from Steyn, through to Klaasen and Rabada set Masakadza up with a reverse three-card trick that went yorker, yorker, bouncer Zimbabwe were once again three down in close proximity to the Powerplay. Another low total loomed, but Williams and Taylor went on the counterattack in style. They added 73 for the fourth wicket, Taylor reaching a significant milestone in the process as he became the third Zimbabwean to reach 6,000 runs in ODIs, after the Flower brothers. Some brilliantly sharp keeping from Klaasen had Taylor stumped for 40, but Williams continued to attack and raced past his previous best of 55 against South Africa. He eventually played too early to be caught and bowled by Rabada for 69, and with Peter Moor and Elton Chigumbura falling cheaply it was left to Donald Tiripano and Mavuta to boost the score beyond 200. Zimbabwe didn’t have quite enough left in the tank to bat through their innings, Tiripano falling for 29 in the pursuit of quick runs with three balls to go. They did at least offer South Africa a reasonable target to chase under lights, and the hosts’ top order responded with their most compelling performance of a 3-0 whitewash.

A partida estava 1 a 1.

Ninguém me falou não, eu ouvi! Vergonha. O jogador do Inter (Rodinei) já tinha cartão amarelo. Vergonha – escreveu.

Ange could forget about Dier by unleashing Spurs academy star

Tottenham Hotspur have been flying this season but have now fallen to successive defeats in the Premier League after going ten matches without losing in the opening phase under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

Despite this, it's fair to say that there has been a resounding turnaround given the malaise that had crept in last season, with Antonio Conte's dismissal in March preceding a lumber to eighth place and the summer departure of Harry Kane, the club's record goalscorer.

Postecoglou has put a clear emphasis on bringing talented academy players to the fore – also a clear trend from his Celtic days -and given that Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are among the raft of absentees at present due to injury and suspension respectively, teen titan Alfie Dorrington might now be deserving of a chance, with Eric Dier not cutting the mustard.

Eric Dier's statistics this season

Since Postecoglou's Tottenham squad started competing in the Premier League this season, it's been perfectly clear that Dier is not in the 58-year-old's plans, having failed to earn a single minute before disaster struck against Chelsea.

The £85k-per-week defender's contract is also up for expiry at the end of the season, and while he has been called upon of late, it is unlikely that terms will be agreed for renewal.

That being said, he did perform admirably off the bench against Chelsea – who had a two-man advantage but failed to break down the compact Spurs defence until the later stage of the match-winning 100% of his duels, making three clearances and one interception, as per Sofascore.

The home loss against Chelsea was followed up by a defeat at Molineux against Wolverhampton Wanderers, having led for most of the match before a late double sank the visitors and piled on more misery.

While Dier wasn't objectively bad in that game, he didn't assert himself or slot into Postecoglou's system as neatly as Van de Ven or Romero.

Former Tottenham defender Eric Dier

Writing in his post-match ratings, the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick did note one excellent piece of defensive play, but lamented Dier's fault for the Old Gold goals, handing him a 5/10 match score and saying: 'Made a crucial tackle on Matheus Cunha as the midfielder prepared to shoot from close-range but both goals came from midfield runners not being tracked.'

As such, Dorrington, who is aged only 18, must now be provided with his senior debut in a golden opportunity to prove his worth among the seniors, continuing the transformation.

How Alfie Dorrington compares to Eric Dier

Dorrington has now completed 74 matches for the Lilywhites' respective youth sides and will have built much experience at the heart of a successful youth crop in preparation for a time such as this, when injuries might call for his involvement.

Dorrington might only be 18-years-old but he is considered one of the finest defensive prospects of his age group and has even been described as a "real talent" by football.london's Alasdair Gold.

Not only is Dier not the ball-playing presence at the back to fit Postecoglou's system, but he is also not the most robust and reliable in the backline, ranking among the bottom 14% of centre-halfs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles and the bottom 20% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

Given that Tottenham shipped 63 goals in the Premier League last season – a tally bettering only the relegated trio and newly-promoted teams Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest – Dier's output is hardly the stuff of solidity to have stemmed the flow.

And having started 31 matches in the Premier League last year, it's safe to say that he had ample opportunity to pump some resilience into the leaky backline.

He had even been branded a "liability" by writer Mitch Fretton, and while he has been something of a stalwart for the Lilywhites since signing from Sporting Lisbon for £4m in 2014, making 362 appearances, it certainly seems that his ship has now sailed.

Dorrington, in comparison, has been labelled a 'commanding' defender by Spurs' official website, having performed with composure and strength in age-belying style, and is now likely to make his senior debut in the coming months after earning a place on the bench against Wolves.

Last season, it was said that Dier was "nowhere near the required level", now, Postecoglou has instilled confidence and cohesion into the side, and Dier must now be ditched, opening the door for Dorrington to start earning his stripes.

Chelsea target "incredible" £120m star who’s like Kane & better than Jackson

Chelsea have continued to fulfil their status as a big spending juggernaut since the arrival of Todd Boehly in May 2022.

During his time at the club, the American businessman has attempted to take a shortcut in their pursuit of success by arming the Blues with a war chest of funds to spend on emerging young talents.

Whilst accruing over £1bn across three transfer windows hasn't brought the requisite success, the recent 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and the captivating 4-4 draw with Manchester City implies that their plan is slowly coming to fruition.

Mauricio Pochettino is beginning to get the best out of a few of his summer arrivals, including Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, who have contributed to 15 goals between them this season.

The Argentine has also been responsible for breathing confidence in and getting high-level performances out of Raheem Sterling following the Englishman's struggles at Stamford Bridge.

That said, the Blues boss is still on the lookout for more talented youngsters to add to their plethora of attacking options.

Unsurprisingly, one of their targets is Brighton & Hove Albion's Evan Ferguson, who they've raided in the past for Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez and record-signing Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea transfer news – Evan Ferguson

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are huge admirers of Brighton striker Ferguson, despite the talented teenager recently signing a lucrative contract that will keep him at the Amex untill June 2029.

The report states that the Blues could use the connections they have towards the Seagulls following their raid of the club last year.

It is believed they are monitoring his situation with a view to using that inside knowledge to seal a potential deal in the future.

Director of Global Talent and Transfers Paul Winstanley and chief analyst Kyle Macaulay are among the ex-Brighton staff to hold a key role behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.

Despite having the edge over any other club in that regard, Brighton did slap a £120m price tag on his head previously to warn off interested clubs in the summer.

With financial fair play (FFP) breathing down their necks, it's unlikely the Blues are going to break the £100m mark on one player for the third time in the space of a year, however, the 19-year-old has already shown he's supremely talented, hence why a three-figure sum has been touted.

Evan Ferguson's goalscoring record

Brighton captured Ferguson from Irish club Bohemians in January 2021 and the striker quickly established himself as a goal machine in the underage groups.

With an impressive 18 goals in 39 appearances for the Seagulls U23s, the Republic of Ireland international was ready for a shot in the senior side and he took that chance emphatically.

Evan Ferguson celebrates scoring for Brighton & Hove Albion.

Having become the club's fifth youngest-ever player when he made his debut in the Carabao Cup in August 2021, Ferguson made his Premier League debut in February 2022 against Burnley before becoming a key figure in the 2022/23 campaign.

Dubbed by Robert De Zerbi for his "incredible" impact in first-team last term, his rise – like his valuation – was rapid, and the teenager demonstrated that between December 2022 and January 2023 where he bagged three goals in two assists in four matches, including his first Premier League goal in a 4-2 defeat against Arsenal.

A record of ten goals in 25 appearances for Brighton across that season unsurprisingly warranted interest in the 18-year-old from several big clubs, who witnessed the world-beating talents of the youngster unfold before their eyes.

After watching the Irishman score a delightful hat-trick against Newcastle in September – and become the most prolific teenager in Europe at the time – interest in Ferguson reached an all-time high.

This is mainly down to the fact there isn't a goal he cannot score: outpacing and bullying William Saliba before slotting underneath a despairing Aaron Ramsdale, the touch, turn and finish against Grimsby in the FA Cup, towering headers and accurate low finishes.

Ferguson has every type of goal in his repertoire and he's proven that he's a more complete forward than most – despite his tender age – including Chelsea's Jackson.

Nicolas Jackson's Chelsea statistics

Jackson took his goal tally for the season from three to seven – in the space of two matches – after scoring a fortuitous hat-trick against nine-man Tottenham Hotspur and a rebound goal against the reigning champions, Manchester City.

Prior to those two matches, the 22-year-old's confidence was on the floor, missing gilt-edged opportunities and crumbling under the weight of expectation on his young shoulders.

Yet, the Senegalese striker now boasts a respectable record of seven goals in 14 appearances this term and his previous struggles in front of goal have all been forgotten about.

Despite his upturn in goal-scoring form, Ferguson has still shown how supremely clinical he is when the opportunities arise in contrast to Jackson.

Whilst Ferguson is outperforming his xG by 2.29 and scoring at a rate of 118 minutes per goal, Jackson has underperformed by a whopping 1.79 and is only scoring once every 142 minutes.

Despite his age, it is remarkable how composed and clinical the Irishman is in front of the goal, drawing comparisons to arguably the best finisher on the planet, Harry Kane.

The future Harry Kane

Whilst goalscoring is any striker's bread and butter, one of Ferguson's great strengths has been the variety in his game, stemming from learning different positions in his formative years with a special focus on midfield.

This is why the Irishman has been compared to Kane. He possesses exceptional link-up play and passing vision, akin to the Englishman, which allows him to drop deep and impact the build-up phase of attacks.

Harry Kane celebrating for Bayern Munich.

In an interview with Sky Sports News, Ferguson underscored the importance of being comfortable at receiving the ball in a midfield position, admitting that he moulds his game off the sensational marksman.

He said: "I think it's helped me sort of just be more natural as a modern striker. You see strikers now, like Harry Kane, the way they drop in… I wouldn't be surprised if he played midfield as a kid.

"I can understand the kind of run to make or when to delay a pass. It's helped me be more complete."

A complete striker in the modern game is a necessity and the three-figure sum being planted on Ferguson's head reflects his true value and incredible potential.

At the age of 19, he's demonstrated physicality and technical brilliance well beyond his years, which is why Chelsea should empty their pockets and raid Brighton once more for their brilliant striker.

Nos últimos tempo vem tendo sequência como titular com Vagner Mancini e é peça importante no elenco.

Moises Henriques stands tall before New South Wales collapse

Queensland lost an early wicket in reply and will face Australia’s Test attack on the second day

Moises Henriques scored a stunning 152 in a lone hand for New South Wales on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland in Canberra.Henriques entered at 2 for 43 in the 15th over after his captain Peter Nevill had won the toss and elected to bat. He smashed 20 fours and a six in 178 balls before falling caught and bowled to Mark Steketee. He was the eighth man out with the score at 274, having scored 152 out of the 231 that were scored while he was at the crease. Nevill was the next highest contributor with just 29.It was Henriques eighth first-class century. He has been particularly savage on the Bulls this year after scoring 134 not out against them in the JLT Cup.Steketee did the bulk of the damage for the Bulls with 4 for 38 as the Blues tail fell apart slumping from 4 for 263 to be all out for 279.Test hopeful Joe Burns was done no favours in the Bulls reply. He was given out caught behind trying to pull a delivery from Josh Hazlewood in the fourth over. Replays suggested he missed the ball by some margin.Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne got to stumps unscathed and will face the likely first Test attack of Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon on day two.
