Sri Lanka's packed Test schedule: three continents in four months

After hosting England in November, Sri Lanka travel to New Zealand in December, then to Australia in January and finally to South Africa in February

Andrew Fidel Fernando31-Jul-2018Sri Lanka’s Test cricketers will be out of the country for almost three months between December and late February, with three back-to-back Test tours scheduled for the Southern Hemisphere summer. These away tours will also come close on the heels of England’s full tour of the island in October and November, which will end on November 27, so long as the SSC Test runs its full duration. As a result, Sri Lanka will play nine Tests in the space of four months, in three different continents.Graphic: Sri Lanka have a hectic away season ahead in 2018-19•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Although this is an arduous schedule, Sri Lanka are not foregoing practice matches. And while the team does have a window to send its Test specialists back home while the limited-overs leg of the New Zealand tour is ongoing, the team management has chosen instead to send those Test players early to Australia, so they can begin acclimatising to Australian conditions as early as possible.”We would definitely be playing warm-up matches in New Zealand and Australia,” said SLC CEO Ashley De Silva. Those matches are not confirmed yet, but are both likely to be three-dayers, with the one in Australia set to be a pink-ball encounter, ahead of the day-night Test in Brisbane. “Once the New Zealand Tests finish, our Test players will go straight to Australia.” Provided the second Test in New Zealand ends on December 30, the Test specialists will have more than three weeks in Australia before the Tests begin there on January 24.Sri Lanka’s busy schedule

October-November: England in Sri Lanka – Five ODIs, one T20I, three Tests (Galle, Pallekele, SSC)
December-January: Sri Lanka in New Zealand – Three-day warm-up, two Tests (Wellington, Christchurch), three ODIs, one T20I
January-February:Sri Lanka in Australia – Three-day warm-up, two Tests (Brisbane, Canberra)
February-March: Sri Lanka in South Africa – Two Tests (Durban, Port Elizabeth), one-day warm-up match, five ODIs, three T20s

Then, once the Australia Tests conclude, there is again no time to return home before the South Africa Tests begin. The match in Canberra is scheduled to conclude on February 5, and the Test in Durban set to start on February 13, which means there are only eight days for the team to fly to South Africa and acclimatise there. Understandably, there is not likely to be a practice match ahead of the Test series there, but SLC has negotiated full use of practice facilities from Cricket South Africa, virtually from the moment they arrive. That Test series will conclude on February 25, before Sri Lanka play five ODIs and three T20Is, in addition to a single one-day warm-up match.Counting England’s hectic tour of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka play nine Tests, 13 ODIs and five T20s between October 10 and March 24, with two three-day warm-up games and one one-day practice game thrown in. It is possible that all-format players will be rested at various points through this season, particularly with the World Cup in June next year. Fast bowlers are likely to be rotated as well.

Leeds United set price tag for "leader" to leave the club on permanent deal

Leeds United could be set to lose one of their senior players next year, with a fresh report revealing that club chiefs have already set their price range.

Leeds' summer departures

Daniel Farke sanctioned the sales of 15 players over the summer, Tyler Adams, Rodrigo, Tyler Roberts, Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles being the ones to leave on a permanent basis, whilst the remaining ten were sent out on a season-long loan to increase their game time.

The Whites will be aware that the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville attracted significant interest during the previous transfer window, so there’s a strong possibility that they could be on the move in the coming months, but they aren’t the only ones to have been linked with an exit.

Maximilian Wober joined Borussia Monchengladbach back in July until the end of the campaign, following the club’s relegation to the Championship, and it’s fair to say that he’s made a fantastic start to life on the road in the Bundesliga.

The Austrian centre-back has firmly established himself as Gerardo Seoane’s overall best-performing player so far this season with a match rating of 7.04 (WhoScored – Borussia Monchengladbach statistics), and the 25-year-old’s form means that his loan club are keen to retain his services next year.

Leeds open to Maximilian Wober sale

According to Fussball News (via The Yorkshire Evening Post), Leeds have named their price for Maximilian Wober.

Borussia Monchengladbach reportedly know how much they will have to pay if they want to keep Leeds star Max Wober. Much will likely depend on whether the Whites can return to the top flight, but Fussball News have reported a vague asking price.

"They say Monchengladbach will have to pay a ‘low-end double digit figure’ (eight figures) to land Wober permanently amid his comfortable adaption to life with his loan club. Wober only joined Leeds in January.”

Leeds United defenderMaximilian Wober.

Whilst Leeds understandably wanted to get Wober off their wage bill after making the drop down to the second tier, he can be a true “leader” at the heart of a backline, according to former manager Jesse Marsch, so selling him for good may be the wrong decision.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Vienna’s native currently ranks in the 99th percentile for blocks per 90 minutes by players in his position (FBRef – Wober statistics), and he's made 19 tackles so far this season, which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Borussia Monchengladbach statistics), displaying his desire to get stuck in and clear the danger for his team.

The German outfit’s left-footed ace is also capable of getting involved at the opposite end of the pitch having clocked up 32 contributions, 17 assists and 15 goals, since the start of his career (Transfermarkt – Wober statistics), so the fact that he can make an impact in both boxes is a huge bonus for Farke.

Furthermore, Wober has the versatility to operate at left-back and higher up in two midfield roles alongside his usual position at centre-back, so keeping him in the building upon his return from his loan really is a no-brainer of a decision to make should the club be able to afford having him on the books.

Howe could bench Bruno for "special" Newcastle talent with 0 starts this season

Bruno Guimaraes is a player that Newcastle United supporters could only dream of prior to the PIF takeover in 2021 but the Brazil international has gone from strength to strength at St James' Park, quickly becoming a fan-favourite in the Gallowgate End.

The former Lyon midfielder joined the Magpies for £40m back in January 2022 and was key to the club's surge from being relegation candidates to contenders for the top four in the Premier League over the course of his eighteen-month spell in a black-and-white shirt.

Guimaraes is one of the first names on Eddie Howe's teamsheet before a game but the head coach will need to keep him fit and fresh, particularly for Newcastle's crucial upcoming bouts against Arsenal in the league and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Thankfully, there is one man back and raring to go ahead of tonight's EFL Cup clash away at Manchester United, having recovered from two long-term injuries which kept him out of the side for the guts of five months.

Joe Willock injury update

Like Bruno, Joe Willock has been a key player for Howe during his spell as Newcastle United boss, although the latter was already at the club when the ex-Bournemouth manager was appointed, having moved to the North East permanently in 2021 for £25m following an initial, successful loan spell.

Joe-willock-Newcastle-Sheffield-united

Willock even matched the record for scoring in seven consecutive appearances with the Geordie outfit back when Steve Bruce was in charge, a feat he shares with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer. This led ESPN journalist Roberto Rojas to call the former Arsenal player a "special" talent.

The 24-year-old made 43 appearances for the Magpies last season, helping the side to finish fourth in the Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in two decades, while also reaching the final of the EFL Cup.

Unfortunately, at the business end of last term, Willock suffered a "serious" hamstring injury which forced him to miss pre-season and the start of the current campaign. Nevertheless, the midfielder returned to training back in September but was handed another setback in the form of an achilles problem, keeping him out of the first team for even longer.

However, Willock has now been eased back onto the pitch by Howe who handed the player 38 minutes of game-time in total over the last week during Newcastle's 1-0 defeat to Dortmund on Wednesday night and a 2-2 draw with Wolves on Saturday. The recent news of Sandro Tonali's ten-month betting ban means Willock could feature quite heavily for the team this term.

Perhaps tonight's bout versus Erik ten Hag's struggling Red Devils could be the perfect opportunity for the manager to hand Willock his first start in 167 days.

Willock's stats last season

Willock is a "box-to-box midfielder" who excels in the final third and is even more of a goal threat than Guimaraes due to his innate, attacking prowess in the final third. According to FBref, the Englishman registered 0.31 goals and assists per 90 last season for Newcastle United while Guimaraes boasts 0.21 per 90 in the current campaign. Furthermore, Willock achieved a combined expected goals and assists rate of 0.45 per 90, double Bruno's numbers.

emile-smith-rowe-joe-willock-newcastle-opinion

The former Arsenal academy star averaged 3.99 touches into the opposition's penalty area per 90 in the previous campaign to Bruno's 1.56, as well as 19.7 touches in the final third per 90 while the Brazilian's tally for this season stands at 16.4 per 90.

The two players possess a similar pass completion rate too, with Willock completing 81.5% of his passes to Guimaraes' 86.4%, although the latter is far more suitable to making his side tick in possession, averaging 74.4 touches per 90 to Willock's 46.9 while attempting 29 more passes per 90 than his midfield counterpart.

There is no doubt that Bruno makes Newcastle far better at maintaining possession and building attacks, whereas Willock is more attack-minded. However, tonight's clash at Old Trafford will likely be more transitional which could suit the returning star's overall game and be a better fit for the Magpies, while also allowing Howe to give some much-needed rest to Guimaraes ahead of Saturday's fixture against Arsenal.

Australia batsman Steven Smith will miss the rest of this year’s CPL with a side strain. The injury was revealed by his Barbados Tridents captain Jason Holder at the toss ahead of their game against St Lucia Stars on Sunday at Kensington Oval.A subsequent interview with the side’s head coach Robin Singh revealed that Smith has left for home to receive treatment for the injury.Smith was signed as replacement for Shakib Al Hasan after he became available to play in the CPL for the first time following his one-year suspension from international cricket for his role in the ball-tampering scandal during Australia’s tour of South Africa. The 29-year-old had fared modestly before the injury, scoring 185 runs in seven innings while also taking three wickets, though he was Man of the Match in one of the only two wins this year for the bottom-placed Tridents by scoring 63 and taking 2 for 19 against Jamaica Tallawahs in Florida.

> Confira a tabela completa do Brasileirão

Could cost £0: Monchi and Aston Villa eye move for "magnificent" defender

Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing the acquisition of a "magnificent" defender on a free transfer next year.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans are absolutely flying under Unai Emery this season, having recovered so well from the shock 5-1 defeat away to Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Emery's men now sit fifth in the Premier League table, and only four points behind current leaders Tottenham, and there is no reason why they can't mount a genuine push for Champions League football given their ability to score goals so freely.

Villa have been linked with a move for a number of players recently as the look to add even more attacking quality, including Besiktas forward Semih Kilicsoy, but they may also need to add to their defensive departments, with the likes of Alex Moreno and Tyrone Mings suffering long-term injuries.

It looks as though the Midlands side are now eyeing a player who is already plying his trade in British football – one with plenty of experience at both club and international level.

Aston Villa eyeing Borna Barisic as a free agent

According to a new report from Italian publication Calciomercato, Villa are interested in signing Rangers defender Borna Barisic in the near future. The Villa target is out of contract at the end of this season, at which point he will be available on a free transfer, and Emery could be ready to pounce.

Barisic's statistics for Rangers show what a consistent player he has been for them down the years, with 215 appearances coming his way and an overall tally of 52 assists. He has also won 35 caps for an impressive Croatia team, during a generation that has seen him play alongside the likes of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic.

This all outlines why the left-back could be a really shrewd signing by Villa in one of the next couple of transfer windows, bringing plenty experience to the squad, as well as attacking quality, all without a transfer fee.

At 30 years of age, Barisic wouldn't necessarily be seen as a long-term option for Emery, but he still has enough years left in him to be an important figure for a while, especially at a time when footballers can often tend to peak later.

Journalist Quentin Gesp has lauded the Rangers ace as "magnificent" in the past, and he could come in and provide good competition for Lucas Digne and Moreno at left-back, allowing Emery to shuffle his pack more often and have even more depth at his disposal.

It could be that next summer is the most likely time for Villa to sign Barisic, with a January switch likely to require a transfer fee, but either way, he would be an astute addition if he does complete a move to Villa Park.
