The cricketers almost always console you; they invariably bring you peace. That, at any rate, was the curious feeling one had even on this grey Sunday at Emirates Old Trafford as one watched Nottinghamshire’s batsmen build a lead of 64 runs and then Liam Livingstone’s batsmen reduce it to just six before persistent rain prevented any play after tea.Behind Stretford Town Hall a football match rumbled away but inside the home of Lancashire cricket the County Championship has settled in, even in this benightedly wet April. And, it had to be remarked as the day progressed, this Old Trafford was probably the more content.None of which will console either Haseeb Hameed or Alex Davies this bedraggled Sabbath evening. Hameed had put on 49 with Keaton Jennings and had looked in little trouble until he played forward and didn’t quite miss a ball from Harry Gurney. That, at least, was the judgement of Graham Lloyd. Hameed looked at the umpire for a moment and trudged off with 19 runs against his name. No one missed the point that an opportunity to impress the selectors had gone a-begging.Five minutes later Davies attempted to get off the mark by pulling his fifth delivery backward of square. The ball went through to Tom Moores who joined the slips and Gurney in a full-throated appeal. Again Lloyd’s finger was raised. Davies stood his ground and gazed at the official for a couple of long Steinbeckian seconds. One imagines that not since the age of the basilisks has there been such a glance. But there was nothing Davies could do about things except follow Hameed to the pavilion. Jennings, whose straight drive off Samit Patel had been one of the shots of the day, came in to tea unbeaten on 27. Then the rain set in with growing vengeance. Quite soon it was raining at all the County Championship venues except Lord’s, where the game was over, and Headingley, where it hadn’t started. The first third of this day at Old Trafford had been taken up with Nottinghamshire carefully constructing their lead of 64, an advantage which may have been beyond their avarice on the Saturday evening. Riki Wessels’ 44 was the largest contribution but one’s eye was taken by young Tom Moores, a batsman who will never let a bowler settle if he can help it. The heir to Chris Read’s gauntlets, Moores is, like his predecessor, every inch a cricketer and his 143-minute 38 is the longest innings of the match to date.Lancashire’s bowling was willing enough but the home side never looked like taking wickets until the last three fell in as many overs, two of them to Liam Livingstone. The Lancashire skipper had earlier produced a fine off-spinner to remove Wessels but the grey morning session was also illumined by Moores’ cover-driving and his picked-up six off Keaton Jennings, a shot plucked straight from a steamy July evening at Trent Bridge and the pressing needs of T20 cricket.Moores was the only Nottinghamshire batsman not to be dismissed by Livingstone on this third day. He was bowled by Joe Mennie when attempting to make room to pull the ball to leg but he managed to do no more than deflect it onto his leg stump. A few minutes’ later Jake Ball’s heave saw him stumped by Davies and the Lancashire openers dashed off to prepare for their innings.
Despite falling to successive defeats in the Premier League, the feel-good factor is still present for West Ham United, who have ostensibly just faced the toughest teams in the division.
Having won the Europa Conference League last season, the Hammers have continued their European journey and tread the path to glory once more, back in the Europa League in pursuit of more silverware.
Declan Rice, midfield man mountain, was sold to Arsenal for £105m in the summer but scarcely looks missed in east London, as David Moyes has bolstered the squad with a spread of exciting additions.
How are West Ham playing this season?
After six matches in the English top-flight, West Ham have achieved three victories, suffered two losses and completed one draw, perched in seventh place with ten points.
West Ham United manager DavidMoyes
The London Stadium side have also made a successful start to the continental journey after dispatching Serbian side Backa Topola in the opening match of the Europa League.
Rice, unequivocally, is a big miss, but with James Ward-Prowse posting seven direct goal contributions from six matches thus far, he looks to be a bona fide steal; likewise, Edson Alvarez, holding midfielder, has been "absolutely perfect" – according to Joe Cole – since arriving from Ajax in the summer.
West Ham boast a considerable squad more than capable of qualifying for Europe once again, and perhaps even pushing for another major honour, and while optimism prevails despite another setback against Liverpool, centre-back Nayef Aguerd continued his stuttering start to the season, and Moyes must now consider dropping him.
How did Nayef Aguerd perform against Liverpool?
The Moroccan machine has been a rock since joining from French side Rennes for £30m in June 2022 (well, he spent considerable time in the first half of the 2022/23 campaign sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in pre-season) but he excelled once fit.
Completing the term with a European trophy, 30 appearances under his belt and praise for his "superstar" showings by reporter Mohamed Salad, the 34-cap international has been a solid and dependable member of Moyes' thriving outfit, and will continue to play a big part as the season stretches on.
West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd.
However, against Liverpool, the 27-year-old continued an error-strewn start to the season, with The Athletic's Roshane Thomas noting that "defensive errors are holding him back".
On Merseyside, the defender made five clearances and blocked three shots but was dribbled past and committed the foul for Mohamed Salah's opening penalty, as per Sofascore, with West Ham starting the match the better, slicker team.
The £50k-per-week ace also only won one of his four contested ground duels (losing 75%), while completing just 73% of his passes and committing two fouls, hardly the inspiring, resolute display needed against the Anfield din.
As per FBref, the 6 foot 2 titan does rank among the top 5% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 17% for blocks and the top 18% for clearances per 90, but he no doubt needs to ensure lapses in decisive moments are eradicated, especially with a dynamic force in Konstantinos Mavropanos now competing with the Moroccan for a starting berth.
Kurt Zouma has captained the Hammers across every league outing this season and thus will hardly be dropped, and after another display that left much to be desired, his Greek confrere could now be pushing for his maiden Premier League start under Moyes' wing.
Especially after receiving praise from journalist Dan Woffenden for his "impressive" performance in the Europa League last week.
Aguerd is a commanding, iron-fortified centre-half who deservedly has a spot in West Ham's regular starting XI, but having completed a substandard start to the season, he must now be dropped for Mavropanos, who deserves a chance to strut his stuff on Premier League grass.

Rangers continue to look at potential options to come in as their new manager, and it looks as though an up and coming British boss is on their shortlist.
Who is in the frame to be Rangers' next manager?
The Gers made the big decision to sack Michael Beale on Sunday night, with results and performances simply not good enough so far this season. The Englishman only lasted 10 months in role, and while there were hopes that he would be an exciting young appointment at the time, it ultimately didn't work out.
The challenge now is for Rangers to bring in a manager who can turn the club's fortunes around from the off, narrowing the seven-point deficit on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race, and playing good football along the way.
A plethora of names have been thrown into the hat as Beale's potential successor at Ibrox, from Graham Potter to Kevin Muscat, and now a lesser known but exciting individual has cropped up.
What's the latest Rangers manager news?
According to a new report from The Daily Record, Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe is seen as a surprise contender to come in and replace Beale:
"Preston manager Ryan Lowe has emerged as a shock contender for the Rangers job. The recruitment process to find Michael Beale's replacement is well underway with the Lilywhites supremo being identified as the perfect fit for the Ibrox hotseat.
"Record Sport understands Light Blues chief executive James Bisgrove has made tentative enquiries over the financial outlay required to lure the 45-year-old Scouser from Deepdale. North End are riding high in third spot of the English Championship after their best start to a league season since 1928/29 with six wins from nine league games this season.
"Lowe has moulded a no-nonsense reputation for delivering an attractive, attacking brand of football while revamping underachieving squads in a ruthless fashion with that identikit now part of the desired job description at Ibrox. The former Bury striker guided Plymouth Argyle to promotion from League Two before taking the reins at Preston just under two years ago and is a close friend of former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard from the pair's time as youth players at Liverpool."
Lowe may be seen as a surprise candidate to become Rangers' next manager, but he should also be looked at as an exciting option, considering what he is achieving in his career so far.
The 45-year-old is working wonders at Preston, guiding them to third place in the Championship currently, when few saw them as one of the promotion powerhouses at the beginning of the season.
As mentioned in the report, Lowe plays an exciting brand of attacking football that would surely appeal to Rangers supporters, and he is a young manager with fresh ideas, once revealing that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of his forward-thinking mindset and tactics.
Lowe may not a proven option, perhaps making him a little bit of a risk like Beale was when he joined, but what he is doing in the Championship is testament to his ability and long-term potential, and he looks like a top-quality manager.
-O importante é a classificação.

Paul Collingwood’s insertion looked straightforward enough, but it did not turn out as he planned as Leicestershire put up stiff resistance

ScorecardLeicestershire have made an imperious start to their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash against Durham posting 301 for 4 on day one, punishing Paul Collingwood for inserting the visitors at Emirates Riverside.Michael Carberry, Paul Horton and Mark Cosgrove all made fifties as the home side’s bowlers toiled on a flat pitch, leaving them with a huge task ahead of them to get back into the contest. The toss was contested and Collingwood opted to send the visitors into bat, despite the bright sunshine at the Emirates Riverside. Carberry and Horton were watchful at the crease in the early stages of the innings to see off the threat of the new ball. Once Chris Rushworth and Nathan Rimmington were removed from the attack, boundaries flowed off the bowling of Barry McCarthy and James Weighell as Leicestershire coasted into lunch at 80 for 0.Horton remained composed after the break and notched his fifty off 114 deliveries – his second on the bounce in the County Championship. The visitors eased past the 100-run mark before Carberry reached his half-century as he guided a shot down to the boundary, reaching the milestone slightly quicker than his partner in 97 balls. The opening partnership of 146 was broken when Horton played a loose cut off the bowling of Nathan Rimmington, drilling the ball straight to Cameron Steel at point for 75. Carberry followed for 73 when he was adjudged lbw to Barry McCarthy in a tight call. Colin Ackermann found the boundary with regularity, notching five fours and six, and was looking comfortable at the crease as Leicestershire passed 200.However, the South African fell one delivery shy of the tea break when he edged behind a delivery from James Weighell for 36. Mark Cosgrove found his feet and was able to compound his side’s advantage, blunting Durham’s attempts to break back into the contest. McCarthy notched his second breakthrough of the game when he snagged Ned Eckersley lbw for nine.Cosgrove remained composed and reached his fifty with a boundary, nudging a McCarthy delivery through gully. The Australian’s half-century was the quickest of the lot, taking only 80 balls, with nine boundaries in his innings.Durham took the new ball with the hope of making further inroads, but the attempts of Rushworth and Rimmington were in vain as pitch continued to offer little assistance. Cosgrove and Lewis Hill continued to put runs on the board and they took Leicestershire’s total beyond 300 in the final over the day, with the Aussie unbeaten on 66.

It has been reported that a Tottenham transfer target could now leave his club for under £20 million, which may be a more than affordable price.
Who are Spurs signing in January?
The January transfer window is slowly approaching and is set to open its doors in just over two and a half months, with Spurs well and truly preparing for it. Chairman Daniel Levy and Chief Football Officer Scott Munn sought to bring in a new sporting director to replace Fabio Paratici, with Aston Villa chief Johan Lange set to begin his new role on November 1. There is work for the incoming new Spurs employee, as reports suggest that manager Ange Postecoglou wants to strengthen the squad in various areas.
The Lilywhites have just Eric Dier as cover for current centre-back pairing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, so it is believed Tottenham are targeting the likes of Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, Juventus star Gleison Bremer, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba as possible contenders. Meanwhile, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been heavily linked with a departure, with the north Londoners reportedly eyeing both Kalvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher as potential options to replace the Dane.
Jota from Al-Ittihad and Galatasaray star Kerem Akturkoglu have also been linked with moves to Tottenham this week, while they're also reportedly keeping tabs on Brentford star Ivan Toney's situation if the Englishman does depart Brentford in 2024.
Victor Nelsson transfer update
Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.
Going back to Nelsson, who is actually falling out of favour at his club right now, there has been quite a promising update on the reported Spurs transfer target. The defender, who allegedly wanted to join Tottenham over the summer window (Ekstra Bladet), is finding himself nearer and nearer the Galatasaray exit door. Nelsson has apparently lost his place to former Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, and it is believed that the Turkish Super Lig side no longer want him in red and yellow.
That is according to Milliyet, who shared the latest Nelsson transfer news this week. They claim, in some good news for Postecoglou, Lange and Tottenham, that Galatasaray are willing to sanction the 24-year-old's sale for under £20 million. His release clause is actually around £22 million, with the club now entertaining a discounted sale price as they fear Nelsson's value will plummet sitting on the bench.

Other recent Nelsson transfer updates have suggested that the Denmark international defender is an "important" target for Tottenham, so this could come as quite a decent pull for Spurs to make a mid-season move. However, it is surprising that the player may be sold for a lesser price, as he's been a pivotal figure for Galatasaray over the last two seasons.
According to WhoScored, Nelsson was an undroppable member of manager Okan Buruk's starting eleven last season; featuring over more league minutes than any other outfielder in their squad, so a move to north London could be one to keep an eye on.
