Leeds United have agreed a deal to sign Swansea City striker Joel Piroe this summer, and a reliable journalist has revealed when the move is likely to be completed.
Where is Joel Piroe from?
Piroe was originally born in Wijchen, Netherlands, but made the move to the Championship when he joined Swansea from PSV Eindhoven back in 2021, and he’s since gone on to become a regular feature of Michael Duff’s first team having made a total of 96 appearances to date.
However, the 24-year-old’s contract is set to expire in less than a year, meaning that now would be the perfect opportunity for his side to cash in, and he won’t have any problem attracting potential suitors having established himself as their top-performing offensive player last term.
According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Daniel Farke’s side were one of the clubs firmly in the mix to sign the Dutchman, and it wasn’t long before Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas confirmed that talks were ongoing regarding a switch, and there has now been a significant development if the following update is to be believed.
Swansea City striker Joel Piroe.
When will Leeds sign Piroe?
According to The Daily Mail, Piroe is "heading" to Leeds to start undergoing his medical tests after the club "agreed on a fee" of £12m to sign him from Swansea.
Southampton, Leicester City and Everton have also "shown interest", but it was the LS11 outfit who held "key negotiations" on Monday and have "worked hard to convince the forward of a move" over the past couple of days.
Fabrizio Romano has also since revealed that the centre-forward is expected to put pen to paper on the necessary paperwork to fully finalise the move by the end of the week.
How many goals has Piroe scored?
In the Championship last season, Piroe racked up an impressive 21 goal contributions (19 goals and two assists) in 43 appearances, form which saw him receive five man-of-the-match awards, but the striker also posed a constant threat even when he didn’t hit the back of the net.
The Roebbers client, who is naturally left-footed, recorded a total of 140 shots over the course of the previous campaign which was more than any other of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, not to mention the strong link-up play that he has with his peers, ranking in the 96th percentile for pass completion.

Swansea’s “clinical” forward, as hailed by journalist Josh Bunting, is also a versatile operator having been deployed in five different positions over the pitch since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even in attacking midfield.
After missing out on a deal to sign Aston Villa's Cameron Archer, who has reached an agreement to join Sheffield United, Farke will have no doubt felt a sense of disappointment, but the imminent arrival of Piroe should lift his spirits. He's arguably a better option than the less experienced Archer considering his proven track record in the second tier.
Despite the twin collapses in Wellington, the West Indies captain backed his batsmen to bounce back in the second Test in Hamilton

West Indies had a solid build-up to the New Zealand tour, having chased down 322 in Leeds and sealed a 1-0 series win over a full-strength Zimbabwe side. Captain Jason Holder was optimistic the team could secure their first Test victory in New Zealand in 22 years. Instead on Monday, they succumbed to an innings defeat in the first of two Tests, after the batting line-up collapsed twice in Wellington. In the first innings they careened to 134 all out before tea, and watched New Zealand pile up 520 for 9 declared. In the second, the visitors made a better start, moving to 257 for 3 but they lost their last seven wickets for 62 runs to be dismissed for 319.Holder conceded that the lack of a healthy first-innings score hurt the team, but said there was no need to “panic”. He backed his team to bounce back in Hamilton, where the conditions are usually more favourable for batsmen.”To get 300 odd [in the second innings] is still very good but we probably wanted it in the first innings,” Holder said. “We always speak about a good first-innings total; it always sets the game up. We din’t have that in the first innings and obviously faltered.”We shouldn’t panic.I think we have done reasonably well in the year. We have done some good things in this Test match as well. So, there is no need to panic. Just one Test match gone – we have lost the first match obviously – but there is a chance to put things right in the second Test match. Hamilton, probably, will have similar conditions to what we had here in the second innings. I have played there and it is a good batting surface, and hopefully the batsmen can put a good first-innings total and we try to control the game from there.”West Indies’ batsmen went for their shots on the fourth morning and lost wickets in a heap, but Holder defended their approach, saying that was the only way they had to try and make New Zealand bat again.”We just tried to be positive. There was no point just staying out there, there were two days left in the game and we had to knock off the deficit,” Holder said. “The only way to do that was by being positive. I don’t think anybody was reckless at any stage. It was just a matter of us not being able to overcome the New Zealand bowling attack today.”West Indies had a few silver linings in the innings defeat: each of their top four had starts in the second innings with opener Kraigg Brathwaite and No.3 Shimron Hetmyer making fifties, with Hetmyer’s innings particularly punchy and attractive. Sunil Ambris, the debutant, managed only 18 in the second innings after being hit wicket for a duck in the first, but Holder wasn’t too perturbed. Instead, he chose to draw confidence from the talent in the batting line-up. Ambris himself had cracked 153 off 145 balls in the middle order in the tour game against a New Zealand A attack that contained seven international bowlers.”I am really pleased with the progress of our side and if you look at Kraigg Brathwaite he is very young as well – he just turned 25 – and he has led our batting in the last three years,” Holder said. “We’ve got guys like Roston Chase, Shai Hope, and now Hetmyer coming into the side. There is a lot of talent there, Ambris, the debutant, didn’t get runs in this game but he has shown in the past what he can do. I wouldn’t sit and single out one or two players, and I would not let this Test match put down our spirits. We just have to put this behind us and it is important we put it behind us as quickly as possible. We have to learn from it and try not to make the same mistakes in Hamilton.”

Former spearhead Glenn McGrath, however, prefers that Australia play the left-arm quick only if he is “100% fit”
Daniel Brettig in Sydney02-Jan-20181:11
‘Play Starc only if 100% fit’ – McGrath
A recovering Mitchell Starc is a strong chance to return to Australia’s team for the fifth Ashes Test at the SCG, though he would be doing so over the objections of the former spearhead Glenn McGrath, who believes the left-arm quick should only resume bowling when he is “100% fit”.Having failed to recover from a bruised heel in time to take part in the Boxing Day Test, Starc bowled off his full run for about 30 minutes in the SCG nets on Tuesday, and is clearly eager to front up on his home ground alongside fellow New South Welshmen Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon. The captain Steven Smith, meanwhile, took a rare day off the nets due to some back soreness but is expected to be fine to play.SCG Pink Test marks 10 seasons
When Glenn and Jane McGrath founded a breast cancer charity in 2005, they intended to raise awareness about the affliction and also to help ensure sufferers were afforded as much support as possible. The first “pink” day three of the SCG Test followed, and in 2018 the Jane McGrath foundation marks 10 years of that day. “Great to be back here and to think 10 years have gone by is amazing,” McGrath said. “The SCG was my home ground, my favourite cricket ground in the world, so anytime I get to come out here is pretty amazing. But to be the Sydney Pink Test as we call it now makes it that much more special and for 10 years to have gone past is incredible – each year it seems to get bigger and bigger. The way the cricket community has got together and supported the foundation is amazing, I think we’ve got 119 McGrath breast care nurses, supporting more than 160,000 individuals and families going through breast cancer.” The foundation’s fundraising goal for this match is A$1.3 million equivalent to the employment of 10 full-time breast care nurses over 12 months, who can provide support for 1000 individuals. This year’s events will also feature a “pink picnic” at the Sydney Football Stadium for those unable to get into the SCG, with the cricket to be played on a big screen, and pink picnic rugs and a hampers provided.
With nearly two months between this match and the first of Australia’s tour of South Africa, Starc has the opportunity for a break in between, even if he is named in the squad for the ODI series against England. The announced is due on Wednesday. McGrath, who was famously averse to any sort of resting or management during his long and durable career, said he would prefer to see Australia be cautious with Starc, given the niggardly nature of heel injuries and the looming South African assignment.”You want him playing but you want him at 100% and you want to make sure next series he’s ready to go at 100%, so if Starcy’s not 100% I’d be tempted to rest him, unfortunately for the Sydney public,” McGrath said. “They want to see him performing on his home ground and he wants to be out there as well, but you’ve got to think ‘ok, South Africa’s important’, so we’ll wait and see.”As a player you want to play every game, you really only think about the next game and do whatever you can to get through it. When you’ve got important series, South Africa coming up, Australia have won this series here, he’s such an integral part of the Australian line-up. I think they missed him in Melbourne more so bowling to the tail, because the pace and the lengths he bowls, he can clean up a tail pretty quickly.”The SCG strip, part of a natural wicket block as opposed to the MCG’s drop-in surface, is another factor for the selectors, as its extra live grass may be more helpful to Jackson Bird, who had little joy when replacing Starc in Melbourne. How much the wicket is shaved and whether it dries out much more ahead of Thursday’s coin toss will also determine whether Ashton Agar becomes a serious chance to join Lyon in a dual spin attack.Cummins, who is expected to play his first Test on his home ground, said Starc’s heel was showing good signs in that it had not worsened at all since the first time the left-armer experienced pain, as opposed to the more serious ailment Cummins had suffered during his 2011 Test debut in Johannesburg. But he agreed that it would not be wise to risk Starc’s ability to take part in South Africa.1:34
Starc confident he’s going to play – Cummins
“I’d say that [South Africa] is probably the big concern. If it was really bad that’s I guess what would keep him out,” Cummins said. “But it’s different to me. He can walk around. Each time I kind of bowled a spell it got worse and worse. The way he was saying, it was almost worse in the first innings and stayed the same for the whole Perth match.”And the last couple of weeks it’s definitely got a lot better. So it’s definitely different to what I had. By the end of my match, or even the first innings, I could hardly walk. It’s like anything. It’s a bruise. If you keep smashing it, it will get bigger and bigger. But he says it’s in a good spot now. I think if he doesn’t think he can get through this match he wouldn’t play but we’ll find out in the next couple of days.”Starc joined Cummins, Hazlewood, Bird, Smith and his deputy David Warner for a conference in the middle of the SCG before training, in which the subject up for discussion was swinging the ball. Both conventional and reverse swing are likely to factor in Sydney, and Cummins said the assistant coach David Saker had been at pains to discuss taking care of the ball to ensure it would be capable of doing both.”We were actually just talking about swinging the ball and the keys,” Cummins said. “Obviously for bowlers our major tool is the ball, batters the bat. It’s about getting our message the same, which side to shine. It’s kind of sometimes a decision of ‘when do we start shining it one side or the other to get it reversing’ and things like that. I thought both teams did it pretty well in Melbourne.”He also assuaged concerns that the Australians needed Starc to be playing in order to take 20 wickets. “We’ve seen Birdy out the back there he’s bowled beautifully on this wicket and all season in the Shield and taken lots of wickets,” Cummins said. “So I think he’ll fit in pretty seamlessly and here at the SCG. Hopefully there’s a bit more spin for Gazza [Lyon] and we saw how important the first couple of games were when the ball spun, how damaging he can be.”I think we’ll be fine, we’ve got Mitch Marsh in as well. The good thing about our group at the moment is we can all get up for a big spell and it feels like anyone can bowl that big spell that can crack a game open. It doesn’t feel like there’s one spearhead.”For his part, McGrath said he was not in favour of allowing fielding teams more latitude in terms of deliberate bounce throws to encourage greater reverse swing, a practice both teams were warned about by the umpires at the MCG. “You try to look after the ball and get it swinging on pitches like in [Melbourne] where there’s nothing happening,” he said.”Sometimes in India where the pitches are quite flat. But I think conditions in India are a little more abrasive anyway. Not sure how I feel about that. If that [bounce throwing] happens naturally fair enough, but if it’s intentionally throwing it in the deck any chance they get, I think there is a bit of a line there.”

A recent social media post by Arsenal player Declan Rice shows just how excited he is to make his Champions League debut after the group stage draw was revealed this week.
Who do Arsenal have in the Champions League group?
This summer, the Gunners splashed the cash to land the English midfielder from West Ham United, agreeing a club-record £100m transfer which could rise by a further £5m with add-ons.
Part of the reason Rice was ready to leave the Hammers was due to his desire to play in Europe's elite competition. Indeed, he made as much clear in December of last year.
Speaking to the press (via the Guardian), he explained: “One hundred per cent I want to play in the Champions League. For the last two or three years I’ve been saying that.
“I’ve been playing consistently well for my club and I feel like I really want to keep pushing. I see my friends here who are playing Champions League and for big trophies.
“You only get one career and at the end you want to look back at what you’ve won and the biggest games you’ve played in.”
Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…
And when he arrived in North London, one of the first things he said in his interview with Arsenal was: “I’m so excited for that. I’ve said for many years now that I’ve wanted to play in the Champions League. I’ve wanted to push myself at the biggest level.
"This opportunity at Arsenal has arisen where Arsenal are in the Champions League, it’s a great club. At the end of the day you get one career, and I want to be as successful as I can with Arsenal, make as many Champions League appearances as possible and hopefully one day get my hands on that trophy.”
Well, the competition is edging ever closer to Rice and co, and the draw was made this week with the Gunners up against
Sevilla, PSV, and Lens in Group B.
In reaction to the news, Rice couldn't hide his excitement as he posted a picture of the group on his Instagram story and wrote: "Cannot wait. COYG."
Who did Declan Rice play for before West Ham?
Rice was at the Chelsea academy before being released as a youngster aged just 14 as he then joined West Ham. Having spent his earlier years at a Champions League club, this may have instilled his desire to play in the competition one day.
Well, he'll soon get to fulfil that ambition and he's not the only Arsenal player excited to make his debut in the tournament with Gabriel Martinelli also taking to Instagram to say: "The Champions League music at Emirates… I'm ready."
Fortunately for the Gunners, the group seems to be pretty winnable too. Indeed, in reaction to the news, The Athletic's James McNicholas (also known as Gunnerblog) took to Twitter to say: "It’s a very kind draw. Even on the practical side, you’d absolutely take Sevilla being your furthest away trip.
"Arsenal should absolutely be aiming to win that group."
No doubt, Rice, Martinelli and their teammates will be hoping they can get out of the group and go far in the competition – it'll certainly be interesting to see how they all get on.
Arsenal have always had a fine reputation of trusting the youth, but not many periods as replicable as the faith displayed by Mikel Arteta in his present army of youngsters.
The Gunners had the youngest average squad age in the 2022/23 season as recorded last October, representing the side that challenged for the Premier League title until the final stages of the season up against Manchester City.
With captain Martin Odegaard only 24-years-old, and orchestrating leadership skills and innate quality, Arteta is displaying just how much trust he has in the younger talents in his side, deploying them to lead the way for one of the biggest clubs in England.
From rearing Bukayo Saka from the Hale End academy alongside the likes of first-teamers Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson, the north Londoners are excelling at giving their youth products a shot in the spotlight.
Saka is now regarded as one of the best players in the Premier League, and arguably one of the most electrifying talents in Europe, however, he is not alone in being one of the standout forwards in Arteta’s side. Step forward Gabriel Martinelli.
How much did Arsenal sign Gabriel Martinelli for?
Martinelli, Arsenal’s left-winger with innate flair, speed, finishing and confidence.
The Brazilian has it all when it comes to what is wanted in a wide player, proving to be a credit to the club and an example of what can come of a gamble in signing an upcoming youngster from abroad with little recognition.
Signed by Arsenal in 2019 at the age of 18, not many knew the name of Martinelli, a footballer born in the city of Guarulhos whose talents had been noticed by fellow countryman Edu.
The Gunners paid a mere fee of £6m to obtain Martinelli’s services from Ituano, and the rest so far has been history.
Many seniors at the club before, and including Arteta are responsible for the rise of the Brazilian, who was nurtured and weaved into the first team from the moment of his arrival in north London.
Not many knew what to expect of the teenager when he was signed, however, his talents quickly became clear as he contributed to a total of 14 goals in 26 appearances in his debut campaign.
Scoring ten and assisting four in 2019/20, a slow start seemingly wasn’t an option for the teen, who made a phenomenal first impression on the Emirates, with the best still ahead of him.
What is Gabriel Martinelli’s market value now?
Previously lauded as a “sensational talent” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Martinelli’s rise has been exemplary to players, clubs and coaches who look to delve into what the youth have to offer away from the lights of Europe.
Signed for £6m, the gem born in 2001 is now valued by CIES Football Observatory at a staggering €150m (£128m), 2033% more, suggesting just how impressive his emergence on the world footballing scene has been.
saka-martinelli-arsenal
Arsenal thought ahead when considering just how quickly the Brazilian’s rise to fame and form has come, tying him down to a new deal earlier this year in February to extend his stay to at least 2027 with an option of an additional year.
Martinelli penned his deal just 48 hours after Saka committed his future to his boyhood club, showcasing just how treasured the two starlets are to the Gunners and the club’s plans for the future.
Speaking after signing his contract, the Brazilian told of his admiration for the club, saying that he loves “everything about Arsenal”, a huge sigh of relief for the north Londoners after years of being seen as a stepping stone for previous stars.
Why is Gabriel Martinelli worth that much?
Every year, Martinelli’s growth has been notable by the improvement of his numbers in play.
In the 2021/22 campaign, the winger cemented himself as being the Gunners’ favoured left forward, earning 29 Premier League appearances in which he scored six goals and recorded six assists.
Following the success of that season, the Brazilian’s role in Arteta’s side became crucial to their success, with last term being the squad’s and player’s high so far throughout their time together.

While the 2022/23 season left a bittersweet taste of what could have been at the Emirates, it was a time to get excited about what has happened and what is yet to come for the young squad.
Martinelli in particular shone, contributing to 20 goals in 36 Premier League appearances, scoring 15 and assisting five in what was a glowing time to be associated with the Gunners.
The success of the 22-year-old is not as surprising for some, particularly those who have seen his rise within the Premier League, with Jurgen Klopp dubbing the winger as a “talent of the century."
While his contributions to goals are applaudable and recognisably improving with age, the former Ituano starlet stands out for his in-game efforts, with his positioning revealing him to be one of the best in Europe.
As per FBref, the Brazil international averaged 7.19 touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 over the past year, a decimal that ranks him in the top 3% of wingers in Europe’s top-five leagues, to put into perspective how highly the devilish forward is rated.
How much does Gabriel Martinelli earn?
When Martinelli first made his dream move to the Premier League, the teen was earning a wage of £30k-per-week, a freakish sum to the average person, however a novelty price for the services of a top-flight star.
Arsenal's GabrielMartinellicelebrates after Newcastle United's Fabian Schar scores an own goal and Arsenal's second
After penning a new deal in February 2023, the boy from Guarulhos saw his weekly paycheck rise to the tune of £180k-per-week, a sum more notable of a superstar, and a figure telling of his value to Arsenal.
What is next for Gabriel Martinelli?
While there have only been four games in the 2023/24 campaign, the 22-year-old has already had a hand in two goals, assisting twice so far in the bid to improve his tally last term.
The Brazilian will finally get his first taste of Champions League football in red and white this month, as well as an opportunity to take his name to the next level and follow suit in bolstering his figures year by year.
Martinelli may feel like the winner in securing his move to the English capital, however, Arsenal are the real winners for facilitating a £6m move for a teenager and raising him to be the talent he is today.
