Like his idol Lara, Alick Athanaze bursts into the spotlight

West Indies batter smacks joint-fastest half-century on ODI debut to help whitewash UAE

Deivarayan Muthu10-Jun-2023Alick Athanaze has admitted to being nervous before making his international debut, but he shook it off quickly and went onto make it a memorable one by slamming the joint-fastest half-century on ODI debut. Athanaze’s 65 off 45 balls, including 51 which came in the powerplay alone, set the tone for West Indies’ successful chase of 185.”I was a bit nervous actually, but the nerves went away when I got my first runs and it was good,” Athanaze told CWI media after West Indies swept UAE 3-0 in Sharjah. “It was a really good experience [on debut]. [I] haven’t batted much in the night, so it was a first for me actually. But normally that’s how I play in the powerplay – I always look to get the team off to a good start.”Athanaze grew up idolising Brian Lara and more recently when he was with West Indies’ Test side in South Africa, he worked with Lara, who was on tour as the team’s performance mentor. Athanaze said that the conversations with Lara have had a positive influence on his batting approach.”For me, it has been really good,” Athanaze said. “Basically, what we spoke about was judging lengths and trying to get ahead of the bowler. It worked really nicely, and I got myself into some good positions and it was really good to bat out there tonight.”Athanaze put left-arm fingerspinner Aayan Afzal Khan out of the attack in the powerplay with a brace of sixes. Then when UAE’s seamers bowled into the Sharjah pitch, Athanaze countered them with a variety of pulls, including the short-arm jab.Related

Athanaze's joint-fastest fifty on debut helps West Indies sweep UAE 3-0

Athanaze was the top run-getter in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, ahead of Shubman Gill, but it has taken him five years to make the step-up to international cricket. Athanaze isn’t part of West Indies’ ODI squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup Qualifier but could get a run in the following home series against India. Spinner Kevin Sinclair, who had been part of the Under-19 and West Indies A set-ups with Athanaze, was impressed with Athanaze’s fearless strokeplay on debut.”For me, I’ve always known Alick since Under-19 [cricket],” Sinclair said. “He’s a good player and a good batsman. To watch himself express himself tonight at a higher level is something really good to see from the sidelines. I always knew he could bat and he did bring form from Bangladesh and he did very well.”Athanaze also spoke of how the new team management, under the leadership of Daren Sammy and Shai Hope, has encouraged the youngsters to play with confidence and freedom.”The team did really, really well,” Athanaze said. “One thing the captain stresses about is always improving and as you saw right throughout the series, we improved – not just on the batting but fielding as well and bowling. As a young player, it’s always good to be in a winning team and it gives you the confidence to go out and express yourself.”Kevin Sinclair brought out his signature celebration during his four-wicket haul•AFP/Getty ImagesSinclair dedicates Player-of-the-Match award to his grandfatherFriday’s match was a special one for Sinclair, too, who marked his international return with figures of 4 for 24. Carlos Brathwaite, who was on TV commentary, noted that Sinclair is now getting his offbreak to grip and turn more than he did in the past. This has in turn made his slider more effective and put him in West Indies or West Indies A contention across formats.”We were in a bit of a bother, so my thing was just to keep it simple and keep it as tight as possible,” Sinclair said. “Hence, getting a breakthrough as well, and that was really good for myself.”Sinclair credited former Guyana allrounder and coach Esuan Crandon for his recent progress. During the Headley-Weekes tri-series, Sinclair also benefitted from working with Nikita Miller.”As I mentioned I couple of weeks ago, Esuan Crandon,” Sinclair said. “The support he has given me and every time I step out [onto the field], I try and do what I can do with the bat, ball and in the field as well.”It’s all about consistency and I just want to take that moving forward and try to be consistent in what I do.”After winning the Player-of-the-Match award, Sinclair dedicated it to his grandfather Carlton, who was employed as a security guard. Carlton has doubled up as Sinclair’s mentor over the years.”Just want to mention that two days ago was my grandfather’s birthday,” Sinclair said. “It was his 75th birthday. He has been behind me since my tender age of seven, so I want to say this performance is for him.”

Shamima, spinners steer tricky chase to hand Bangladesh win

India lose 6 for 11 before the hosts keep their head in chase and deny the visitors a clean sweep

S Sudarshanan13-Jul-2023Two days after coming close to upstaging them, Bangladesh defeated India in the final T20I to register a consolation win and finish the series 2-1. Chasing 103, Shamima Sultana kept Bangladesh in the hunt with a 46-ball 42 before a brief collapse in the middle threatened to undo the good work. But Sultana Khatun’s eight-ball 12 and Nahida Akter’s calm unbeaten six-ball 10 helped Bangladesh register their third win over India in 16 T20Is.Spinners continue to trouble IndiaLike in the second T20I, India were once again bogged down by the Bangladesh spinners. Smriti Mandhana’s troubles against offspin continued as she was dismissed off Sultana’s first ball. Mandhana was early on an attempted flick and managed to get a leading edge behind the wicketkeeper, where Fahima Khatun pouched it after running to her right from slip. In Sultana’s next over, Shafali Verma danced down the track and whipped the ball straight to long-on. This was after Shafali was kept quiet by seamer Marufa Akter – who, along with Sultana – had two fielders deep on the leg side to cut down boundary-scoring options and denied width outside off.Shorna Akter then struck in her only over, getting a set Jemimah Rodrigues stumped before India collapsed from 91 to 3 to 102 for 9. While Yastika Bhatia failed to connect with an attempted heave and got trapped lbw by legspinner Rabeya Khan, Pooja Vastrakar, Deepti Sharma and Minnu Mani all fell to spin, in an attempt to force the pace at the death. Vastrakar was knocked over by a straight ball from Nahida while trying to hit across the line, while Mani was cleaned up attempting a scoop. Then Deepti holed out to deep midwicket on the final ball of the innings to hand Rabeya a three-for.While Bangladesh bowled 16 overs of spin in the second T20I, they had spinners on for 17 overs on Thursday with India facing 44 dots against them.Harmanpreet or bustComing on the back of a first-ball duck on Tuesday, Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the ship for India after finding herself in the middle, inside the powerplay again. She looked at ease against an on-song Sultana. In the company of Rodrigues, Harmanpreet calmed proceedings, often tapping the ball in front of cover and point for quick singles. She also used the sweep to good effect in an attempt to put the spinners off their lengths.Harmanpreet first added 45 off 49 balls for the third wicket with Rodrigues and then another 26 with Yastika. She also hit the only six of the game, when she slinked down the track against Fahima’s legspin to deposit her over wide long-on. The legspinner went on to have Harmanpreet stumped in the 17th over to severely dent India’s progress at the death. In the end, India managed only 12 runs for six wickets in the last four overs to be restricted to 102 for 9.Ritu Moni and Nahida Akter sealed the win for Bangladesh•BCBShamima holds the chase togetherAfter failing to chase down 96 in the second T20I, Nahida had called for more responsibility from the top five. Shamima took it upon herself to take the chase deep. She hit only three fours in her knock and ran well between the wickets. She used the sweep to find the gap in the arc between deep midwicket and fine leg and kept Bangladesh abreast of the asking rate. She found an ally in captain Nigar Sultana, and the duo added 46 for the third wicket. That partnership put them on course to not repeat the errors from a couple of days ago. But in an attempt to cut Devika Vaidya – brought in for Harleen Deol – Nigar edged one to the wicketkeeper to briefly send jitters in the home dugout. From 62 for 2, Bangladesh were reduced to 85 for 6, with Shamima being run out in the 17th over. However, Ritu Moni and Nahida ensured there were no further hiccups – they were aided by a 13-run over from debutant Rashi Kanojiya, who was brought in for B Anusha – as Bangladesh ensured their bowlers’ good work for a second successive game did not go to waste.

Coventry will not receive a penny if Gyokeres leaves Sporting this summer. The striker is in demand, with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United all supposedly keen to secure his signature, but he is said to have been left furious by the Portuguese club's asking price of €80 million (£67.5m/$92m) and is willing to go on strike to force a move through. Coventry, despite negotiating a sell-on clause, do not stand to benefit.

According to journalist Alex Crook, Coventry sold their clause to Sporting last summer, as they funded a transfer overhaul. They spent £18m ($24m) to strengthen their squad, and it now appears that part of that was paid for by Gyokeres' clause being waived.

DID YOU KNOW?

The sell-on clause was reported to be worth 10 per cent of any deal, so Coventry face missing out on a substantial windfall. Gyokeres made 116 appearances for Coventry, scoring 43 goals.

Bedingham brilliance proves just enough as Ed Barnard's 161 falls one run short for Warwickshire

High-scoring thriller comes down to final-ball scramble as Durham seal gripping victory

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Aug-2023Durham ended Warwickshire’s 100 percent record in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with an exhilarating one-run win from a wonderful, run-soaked game at Edgbaston. The match featured two brilliant centuries. David Bedingham’s 152 (108 balls), supported by Alex Lees’ 66 (77 balls) and Tomas Mackintosh (53, 47 balls) lifted Durham to an imposing 338 for eight. Oliver Hannon-Dalby took three for 54 and now has 23 wickets at 10.43 apiece in this year’s One-Day Cup.Bedingham batted beautifully but his innings was then matched by Ed Barnard who struck his maiden List A century (161, 152 balls) as Warwickshire replied with 337 for eight. Will Rhodes (66, 93) and Ethan Brookes (31, 26) helped Barnard take the Bears close but Durham’s bowlers dug deep, led by Migael Pretorius (four for 50) and Jonathan Bushnell (three for 56) who bowled the last two overs with high composure and skill.Their ice-cool nerve earned Durham’s third win of the group. Warwickshire, meanwhile, already through to the knockout phase, can still book a home semi-final if they beat Sussex at Hove on Tuesday.Put in, Durham lost Michael Jones to the fifth ball when he inside-edged Hannon-Dalby to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess. Lees then gave the innings a solid platform with stands of 55 with Scott Borthwick and 67 with Bedingham.Lees departed furious with himself when, having taken ten from successive balls from Henry Brookes, he lifted the next to mid-off. Bushnell fell first ball, to a fine leg-side catch by Burgess, and when Liam Trevaskis edged Hannon-Dalby to the keeper, Durham were wobbling at 156 for five.Bedingham and Mackintosh played with freedom and verve to add 116 in 92 balls. Mackintosh struck four fours and two sixes in his maiden List A half-century while Bedingham passed his previous best in the format (104) with a six crunched over long on off Hannon-Dalby and then hit overdrive. He crashed 40 from his last ten balls, including three successive sixes off Craig Miles.Warwickshire soon lost Rob Yates when he top-edged Pretorius to mid-off but Barnard and Rhodes added 148 in 23 overs to keep the big home crowd interested.Barnard posted his first List A ton from 106 balls but after Rhodes lifted George Drissell to long off, a cluster of wickets cranked up the pressure. Alex Davies spooned Pretorius to long on and Jake Bethell top-edged a slog at a good-length ball from Bushnell who then had Burgess caught at short third man.Barnard needed help and Ethan Brookes supplied it perfectly with intelligent, skilful batting which no doubt had a few watching home fans wondering why on earth Warwickshire are allowing such a highly talented player leave for Worcestershire at the end of the season.Barnard and Brookes added 85 in 53 balls and the latter departed caught at deep mid-wicket, with his team back in control. Forty needed from six overs came down to 20 from three. When Barnard was caught at extra cover, 15 were needed from 13 balls. Pretorius bowled Jake Lintott in an excellent over which left Warwickshire needing nine from the last. Bushnell bowled a fine last over of full length which denied the Bears the two boundaries they needed and closed out a truly memorable victory

Musonda retires at 28

Was at Chelsea for 10 yearsWithout club since 2024Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Musonda has now decided to put an end to a difficult career, announcing his decision himself on the Rising Ballers podcast as reported by Belgian outlet. Musonda had been without a club since departing Cypriot side Anorthosis last year.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Musonda was earmarked as a star in the making from a young age in his native Belgium, signing for Chelsea for €2.5million (£2.1m/$2.9m) as a 16-year-old in 2012. stated in their report that the attacking midfielder was formerly viewed as "the greatest Belgian talent" in his youth – but he would make just seven appearances for Chelsea, three in the Premier League, scoring one solitary League Cup goal for the club. Loans to Real Betis, Celtic and Vitesse Arnhem would follow, before his release from Stamford Bridge in 2022 and subsequent spells with Levante and Anorthosis. He struggled to find a true home away from Chelsea, hit by injuries across his career.

WHAT MUSONDA SAID

Musonda said on the Rising Ballers podcast: "I've got a big announcement today. It's not easy but it's something I've been thinking about for a long time. After reflecting on my experiences and who I am, I've realised I want to live with purpose to inspire and motivate others."

He added: "The exit [from Chelsea] killed me. It killed me mentally. It was the worst thing. I was obviously with the reserves at that time so the plan was to pick up with the reserves, get some training in and if there were a few games where I could fit in toward the back end of the season, that was the plan.

"Because I literally had just gotten better. I came back in December-January and was training with the reserves. Feeling amazing, happy to be back—obviously it was a long way for me to be fully fit, but just being able to train was amazing.

"The first team was doing really well. It was COVID, so the buildings were split and you wouldn’t really see the first team. Then toward the back end of the season in the car park I ran into Thomas Tuchel, the manager. It was my first time meeting him. He said, 'I’m looking forward to seeing you back and I said, 'Don’t worry, I’ll be back for pre-season'. Because in my mind, it was always pre-season and I’d be back with the first team and we’d see from there. So I came back for pre-season and that’s where things got tricky. That was the end of my time at Chelsea."

Georgia Adams' all-round show helps Vipers to big win over Thunder

Emily Windsor fifty, Lindsey Smith three-for help strengthen bid for knockout spot

ECB Reporters Network09-Sep-2023Georgia Adams went past 400 runs and 15 wickets in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy as Southern Vipers continued their march for a knockout spot with victory over Thunder.Adams scored a classy 71, during a pivotal 114-run stand with Emily Windsor – who scored a boisterous 59 to help shore up Vipers before another collapse saw them post 237. Linsey Smith ripped out the Thunder top order as they slipped to 33 for 5, with Adams getting two wickets, before eventually losing by 64 runs – despite Fi Morris’ 52.Vipers moved up to second in the table, having played a game more than those around them, while Thunder’s hopes of progression took a massive hit with two games to go.Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove set a platform after Vipers had won the toss and chosen to bat first. But after reaching 45, Vipers lost three wickets in eight overs as Hannah Jones’ introduction swung the momentum towards the visitors. The left-arm spinner struck with her first delivery to bowl McCaughan for a spritely 29 off 33 balls before the more sluggish Norgrove was lbw for 16 off 44. Jones also got her fingertips to an Adams straight drive to run out Georgia Elwiss while backing up.But Adams and Windsor righted the ship with a counter attack to lay the foundations for a score which had the potential to get close to 300, especially after Jones quickly completed her 10 overs.Adams was particularly strong running between the wickets in the Arundel heat, while Windsor showed uncharacteristic power – having worked on her hitting at Welsh Fire during the Hundred.Adams brought up her fifth half-century of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 53 balls, while Windsor followed with her second of the competition in 63 deliveries. The duo put on 114 to boost Vipers to 193 for 4 with 14 overs to go, but after Adams clipped Ireland international Laura Delany to midwicket they collapsed.Windsor skipped past Morris in the following over before Smith, Alice Monaghan, Rhianna Southby and Ava Lee all fell as the hosts lost seven wickets for 44 runs in 60 balls – Morris and Olivia Bell both taking three wickets. Vipers ending up on 237 in 47.5 overs.Thunder’s slump was even more severe as their top order disintegrated. Smith was the main instigator as she had Liberty Heap lbw in the second over, Naomi Dattani caught at backward point and Ellie Threlkeld sweeping to backward point. The spinner’s first six-over spell result in in 3 for 17.Mary Taylor picked up Southern Brave team-mate Seren Smale with an in-ducker while Delany was bowled by Adams.Morris and Daisy Mullan dug their side out of the hole, while still staying in touch with the required run rate in a 57-run stand. Morris struck a run-a-ball 50 but both fell in quick succession as Morris was bowled by talented young offspinner Lee and Mullan was caught and bowled by Adams.Phoebe Graham and Tara Norris slowed up Vipers’ hunt for victory, they saw off Smith – who ended with 3 for 29 – but Graham was cleaned up by Taylor.Taylor’s slower ball accounted for Norris, who picked out long-on, and Bell lobbed to midwicket to give Taylor best figures of 4 for 39.

I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles; he has that experience. He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper. He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn’t old for a goalkeeper. I think he’d link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club.
