ACC hopeful of breaking deadlock

Ashraful Haq, chief executive of the Asian Cricket Council, has said that today’s meeting in Colombo will be crucial in breaking an evident stalemate between India and Pakistan

Cricinfo staff05-Dec-2008Ashraful Haq, chief executive of the Asian Cricket Council, has said that today’s meeting in Colombo will be crucial in breaking an evident stalemate between India and Pakistan. Leading figures from the ACC will meet in Colombo on Friday with the impact of the Mumbai terror attacks, and the consequences for subcontinent cricket, set to be a focal point.”We are hopeful that the ACC Development meeting in Colombo and then the finance committee meeting in Chennai will help the officials of the two Boards to interact and alongwith the ACC officials we can help convince India to send its team to Pakistan,” Haq was quoted as saying by the .The January tour has been thrown into further jeopardy after the Indian government’s charge that the terrorists who attacked Mumbai had Pakistani links – a charge Pakistan has denied. Pakistan themselves have suffered from the postponements this year and if India refuse to tour, it could leave Pakistan without a Test from December 2007 to June 2009, when they are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka.Ijaz Butt, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, is expected to meet his opposite number Shashank Manohar on December 12 in Chennai to discuss India’s tour of Pakistan.Haq said he requested Butt to also attend the first day of the Chennai Test between India and England to show solidarity to India. “I have always said that cricket is beyond terrorism and Asian cricket should not be hurt by such dastardly acts,” said Haq. “Asian cricket thrives on Indo-Pak series and we hope that these ties are not stalled as were in the past. Pakistan and India playing each other is a great thing for cricket in Asia in general and for world cricket in particular.”

Nahitan Nandez open to joining Spurs

According to a report by Centotrentuno (via Sport Witness), Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez is now ‘at the top of [Fabio] Paratici’s wishlist’ and it is believed the player is now open to joining Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Nandez chase…

There have been no shortage of claims over the past week linking Tottenham with a swoop for the Uruguay international.

Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports are just two reliable sources who say Spurs are indeed eyeing a swoop for Nandez as they make an approach to Calgliari.

Meanwhile, Calciomercato state that Paratici has even made an offer to sign him on loan with an obligation to buy – an operation totalling around €30 million (£25.5m).

Now, another claim from Italy has emerged with Paratici now seemingly pinpointing Nandez as a priority target.

The Latest: Nandez ‘top of Paratici’s wish list’…

As per Centorentuno (via Sport Witness), the Italian transfer chief has placed Nandez at the top of his wishlist this summer and a Tottenham bid could come soon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Spurs are apparently very keen on signing the 25-year-old this summer and ‘confirmations from London are constant’ over the player.

It is said that the Lilywhites are ‘attracted by the versatility and characteristics’ of Nandez that ‘perfectly match the style of the team’.

In another enticing claim, Centorentuno believe that the midfield ace ‘would like’ Spurs as a viable destination and wouldn’t say no to a move.

The Verdict: Get it done…

The 41-cap star could certainly come as a real bargain for Spurs and Paratici, especially considering he can also play as a right-wing back and solve their lack of depth defensively on that side.

This report claims Spurs could seal a move to sign Nandez for just a paid loan of €10 million (£8.5m) with a future fee of €15-20 million (£12.7m-£17m) – arguably pocket change for a player who has been called ‘powerful’ and a ‘machine’ by Serie A critics (Conor Clancy to This is Futbol).

At just 25, Nandez also holds the potential for plenty of sell-on value in years to come.

Phillips urges Newcastle to sell Longstaff

Kevin Phillips has urged Newcastle United to sell Sean Longstaff after a transfer update emerged.

The Lowdown: Longstaff price revealed

As per The Liverpool Echo, Rafa Benitez is considering a move to sign the 23-year-old for Everton, as he has entered the final year of his current contract in the northeast.

The Daily Mail have now reported that the St James’ Park club have put an asking price of £10m on the central midfielder, with both Southampton and the Toffees interested in his signature.

The Latest: Phillips on Longstaff

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa striker Phillips has urged the Tyneside club to sell Longstaff if they can get the £10m transfer fee quoted for him. He said:

“It’s a lot of money for a player who hasn’t played an awful lot of games.

“£10million for Steve Bruce to strengthen another position in the squad – you’d get that deal done.

“Everton seem to be going down that British and English route with players like Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray.

“He’s got that relationship with Benitez as well. If you’re Newcastle – why not let the kid go?”

The Verdict: Agreed

It would certainly be a good idea for the Magpies to sell Longstaff for £10m, considering that he only has a year left on his deal and could therefore leave for free next summer.

The Englishman was limited to 27 games in all competitions across the entire 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt), and he may see his time on the pitch become even more limited by the permanent signing of Joe Willock from Arsenal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Therefore, to cash in on a squad player who has a year left on his contract would be smart business, and the sooner the better, given that Transfer Deadline Day is slowly edging ever closer.

Daminda fires Ragama CC to top spot

A round-up of the seventh-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Ragama CC roared back into contention in Premier League Tier A when they pulled off a stunning three-wicket win over Bloomfield at Reid Avenue to regain top position, as the race for the championship hotted up.In a top-of-the-table clash, Ragama were indebted to a magnificent bowling spell by 25-year-old right-arm seamer Dinesh Daminda and seasoned campaigner Indika de Saram for steering them to an important victory.Daminda returned the season’s best figures for an innings and for a match, to sink the table toppers who had held the upperhand throughout the match until the final day. He picked up 8 for 51 in the first innings, and then added a further three in the second innings to end with match figures of 11 for 77 – bettering the 11 for 123 by Saracens SC left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara against Lankan Cricket Club last month.Bloomfield struggled to 218 despite having Sri Lankan batsmen Chamara Silva and Saman Jayantha in their ranks. However, despite Daminda’s outstanding bowling, Ragama’s batting failed as they managed only 142 in reply. But they fought back to dismiss Bloomfield for 159 in the second innings and leave themselves with a target of 235.Going into the third day, Ragama were rather shakily placed at 164 for 6, requiring a further 71 for victory with only four wickets intact. The final day was poised for a tense finish, but Ragama had an ace up their sleeve in the in-form de Saram, who resumed from his overnight innings of 75. The 35-year-old Saram forged match-winning partnerships of 70 for the seventh wicket with Kaushalya Weeraratne (42) and an unbroken 53 for the eighth with Malinga Bandara (31 not out) to see Ragama through.de Saram scored 102 off 118 balls – his third century in four innings – which included 11 fours and a six, making him the leading run-getter for the season with over 500 runs.Defending champs Sinhalese SC moved to their highest position for the season with their first win – a crushing innings and 32-run victory over newcomers Army SC who are struggling at the bottom of Tier A with no wins in five matches.SSC’s win was fashioned by captain Tharanga Paranavithana who scored his second hundred of the season to enable them to get to 355, a total which proved to be a match-winning one as the soldiers were bundled out for 193 and 130, succumbing to SSC’s bowling line-up comprising Shalika Karunanayake, Sachitra Senanayake and Thilina Kandamby.Sri Lanka’s Under-19 World Cup captain Ashan Priyanjan distinguished himself in the domestic club circuit with a splendid batting double to steer Tamil Union to a six-wicket win over Colombo Colts at Havelock Park. Priyanjan made a compact 88 to guide Tamil Union to a narrow first-innings lead of 12 and followed it up with another impressive knock of 58 not out during Tamil Union’s 192-run chase. In a high-scoring game at Braybrooke Place, Moors SC drew with Badureliya CC despite a 223-run stand by Nadeera Nawala (142) and Wesley Fernando (68).Three centuries were scored at Maitland Crescent where the match between Colombo CC and Chilaw Marians ended in a stalemate. For CCC, Charith Sylvester scored 111 in the first innings and Bathiya Perera slammed a hundred off 82 deliveries in the second. Janaka Gunaratne ensured that Marians, who conceded a first-innings lead of 127, did not lose the match as he stroked an unbeaten 122, after Marians had lost half the side for 101 while chasing 327.In Tier B, Seeduwa Raddoluwa Cricket Club were the only club to emerge victorious in a high-scoring weekend of matches, defeating Sebastianites by two wickets to keep their title ambitions on course. They lie second behind Saracens SC who were held to a draw by Air Force but managed vital first-innings points. Seeduwa’s match-winners were offspinner Umesh Karunaratne, who picked up nine wickets in the match, and batsman Buddhi Samarawickrema who top scored with 113.Two centuries from Heshan Tillekaratne and Raju Gayashan could not help Lankan Cricket Club to a win against Singha Sports Club at the Premadasa.Police Sports Club were lucky to escape with a draw after Burgher Recreation Club had held the upper hand for most of the clash at the Police Park Ground. While captain Gihan Perera scored a composed 122 in the first innings, it was the bowlers, Romesh Eranga and Charith Keerthisinghe who nearly pulled it off for Burgher. An unbeaten 98 from Milinda Sepala ensured Moratuwa Sports Club avoided defeat against Panadura Sports Club at the De Zoysa Stadium. His fighting knock which came off 143 balls, ensured the few points for the hosts after Amila Perera’s spell of 5 for 45 in the first innings had swung the momentum towards Panadura.Player of the Week – Dinesh Daminda
Five years ago Dinesh Daminda would have given up hopes of continuing his career as a cricketer when he suffered a nasty knee injury at practice and was confined to crutches. The incident occurred at the Bloomfield nets when Daminda, bowling with a pair of rubber soled boots, slipped and fell twisting his left knee. He had screws inserted in his knee to keep it intact and through a six-month period of rehabilitation recovered remarkably well to be ranked among the ten best fast bowlers in the country clocking speeds at around 135 kph. However last season, he had a recurrence of the injury which again pushed back his ambitions of playing for his country. Thankfully he recovered and went to England to play in the Lancashire league but had to fight for his place in the Ragama team as they had already found suitable replacements. Daminda missed the first few matches at the start of the season but in his third game produced a superb piece of seam bowling. His career and season’s best figures helped Ragama regain the top spot in Premier Tier A. “That nasty knee injury was a definite setback to what would have been a promising career for Daminda,” said Ragama CC president Roshan Abeysinghe. “If not for the injury he would have been among the top flight fast bowlers in the national squad.”Points tableTier A

Franchises strategise for best buys

The player auction for the second IPL is expected to be a much more cerebral and focused exercise than last year’s inaugural event

The player auction for the second IPL is expected to be a much more cerebral and focused exercise than last year’s inaugural event, with franchise officials saying they would enter the bidding hall in Goa on February 6 with a maximum of four or five players on their list and hope to take home a maximum of two.Like the first auction, allrounders are expected to be the most valuable picks but the big difference this time is that the focus will be on players who have shown Twenty20 form in the last season.IPL rules specify that teams can have only a maximum of ten foreign players – Delhi Daredevils have already reached the limit with the signing of Dirk Nannes, the Victoria fast bowler. With most of the franchises having around eight players each from the last auction apart from a sprinkling of uncapped foreign players signed this year, even officials are expecting only about 15 players to attract any serious interest next month. However, a preliminary list – accessed by Cricinfo – of players who would be available at the auction shows that almost 70 players are in queue for the US$16 million that the eight franchises are eligible to spend together. The list is now being pruned and updated by IPL officials, who hope to ideally have around 50 players in the mix.As expected, Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff are two players who will be auctioned though the eligibility of England players is still a matter of discussion between the ECB and the IPL, which wants a two-year availability commitment. The preliminary list also includes 15 Australians, including seven internationals, and five players from South Africa including JP Duminy, who is being seen as a ‘hot pick’ after his recent performance in Australia. There are 14 Sri Lankans listed too, two from Pakistan, five from the West Indies, including Andre Fletcher, who starred in the Stanford Super Series, and nine from New Zealand (see box for select names). Shakib-al-Hasan, No 1 on the ICC ranking for ODI allrounders, tops the list of seven from Bangladesh and his outstanding performance against Sri Lanka has meant that franchise officials now value him “at around US$500,000″.No Indian players figure on the list but some of the Under-19 players who were picked up on one-year contracts last year may be made available, though most of them, like Rajasthan Royals’ Ravindra Jadeja and Bangalore Royal Challengers’ Virat Kohli, have already been snapped up again.According to IPL officials, the deadline for franchises to send their nominations for players to be put for the auction is January 28 – February 1 for English players at the latest. This would give the IPL just enough time to get clearances from various national boards and sign player consent forms by February 5, the auction eve.On the IPL radarInteresting names from a preliminary official auction list that is being pruned and updatedAustralia: Brad Haddin, Michael Clarke, Nathan Hauritz, Stuart Clark, Brad Hogg, Beau Casson, Jason Krejza and Shaun Tait.England: Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Owais Shah, Stuart Broad, Samit Patel, Shaun Udal, Darren Gough, Ryan Sidebottom, Ravi Bopara, Monty Panesar, Robert Key, James Foster.South Africa: Gulam Bodi, Charl Langeveldt, JP Duminy, Paul Harris.Pakistan: Asim Kamal, Yasir Hameed.New Zealand: Mark Gillespie, Tim Southee, Jesse Ryder, Jeetan Patel.Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza.Sri Lanka: Thilan Thushara, Nuwan Kulasekara, Jehan Mubarak, Malinga Bandara, Upul Tharanga.West Indies: Darren Sammy, Andre Fletcher.”This year, it is about consolidating the squads,” Joy Bhattacharya, team director, Kolkata Knight Riders, said. “All the other bits are in place and the auction might provide me with what is the last bit that needs to be put in place.”Last year each team was trying to get 13 to 14 players, including Indian cricketers, from the auction. This year, there might be a maximum of two players each team will take. Between the eight franchises, I will be very surprised if more than 15-16 will be chosen. There will be 80-90 odd players in the auction but only 15 will be actually chosen, so it will be a bizarre auction.”Apart from “dual-role cricketers” who have proven Twenty20 records, franchise officials say there is still space for an outstanding cricketer who can bring in the eyeballs. “There will always be space for cricketers who apart from performance will bring with them the aura and the brand image from a sponsorship point of view,” Tim Wright, chief executive, Deccan Chargers, said. “Like Kevin Pietersen.”But another franchise official said this definition would apply to only two cricketers in the current scenario – Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff. “It is unlikely that a Jacques Kallis kind of deal will happen this time,” the franchise official said. Kallis, who is yet to find his feet in the Twenty20 format, was bought by Bangalore for $900,000, purely on his international stature. The South African failed to create an impact and his team, led by Rahul Dravid, finished seventh.Pietersen is being actively sought by Bangalore this time and is expected to fetch around US$1.5m. Mumbai and Chennai are in the fray for Flintoff, the other big draw. A Bangalore official admitted that they would go for Pietersen “because the team right now needs a maverick and a star in the dressing room”.Rajasthan, the inaugural champions, credit a major share of their success last year to a conscious auction strategy of going for performers, rather than big names. “The rest of the franchises have learnt this the hard way and we won’t be surprised if they follow our path this time,” a Rajasthan official said.Interestingly, Rajasthan has considered reversing their strategy this time and go big on one player, possibly Pietersen, who has close ties with the franchise team management, including Shane Warne, the captain, and support staff Darren Berry and Jeremy Snape. But as of now, it is being projected as an “unlikely outcome”.”The ideal case is to have one Englishman to start the season and pick an Aussie who will finish off,” Kolkata’s Bhattacharya said. “Also Pakistan are likely to play an ODI series against Australia between April 20 and May 10. So Pakistan players can start and return to finish the tournament. These are some of the options.”Amrit Mathur, the chief operating officer of Delhi Daredevils, admitted teams would go into the auction with a “limited requirement” as most of the slots were filled last year. “There are two things driving the auction. One is basic team need. The second is if somebody is attractive in terms of sponsorship and who can be sold for a higher price next year. It is like getting someone like David Beckham – he may not play but he has an appeal beyond the field of play. Otherwise, I would go for a promising youngster and make some money on him.”Deccan’s Wright agrees the auction will more focused than last time. “Teams and coaching staff have had time to scrutinise the performances over the last year,” Wright said. “Teams clearly have one or maybe two or a maximum of three components left to fill in. Hence, the focus will be on Twenty20 statistics in terms of strike-rate and so on, rather than a big name.”

Pritchard let Sunderland down vs Blackpool

Sunderland won their fifth competitive match of the season on Tuesday night as they beat Championship side Blackpool 3-2 in the second round of the League Cup.

Lee Johnson’s side were able to overcome going 1-0 down inside the opening 10 minutes to win 3-2, preventing penalties and heading through to the third round of the competition.

Aiden O’Brien scored a superb hat-trick to win the match for Sunderland, having also scored in the first round against Port Vale. The forward caught the eye with his performance and deserves praise for his showing, but one player for Sunderland struggled in the match.

Alex Pritchard lined up in the number 10 position for the Black Cats and failed to put in a display that may lead to some doubts about whether he is capable of mixing it against a Championship opposition. He received the lowest SofaScore rating on the pitch (6.4) for the club, despite picking up an assist for one of O’Brien’s goals – with his corner falling kindly to the attacker in the box to slot in one of his three strikes.

In 73 minutes on the field, Pritchard only managed 36 touches of the ball. Anthony Patterson in goal, meanwhile, had 46 touches, which suggests that the ex-Huddersfield man did not get into the game as much as he should have in midfield. A team’s creative number 10 should be constantly getting on the ball and looking to make things happen, but he was not able to do that against Blackpool.

Although he registered an assist, his corner was the only chance he created in the match and he also missed one big chance to score – showing that his end product was poor, whilst his retention of the ball was not much better. He lost possession 10 times from 36 touches and won one of his four duels. He was not strong enough to retain the ball under pressure and Sunderland were, perhaps, fortunate in the end that his disaster display did not cost them the result.

He let Johnson down with his performance, but it is still early days for the Englishman at the Stadium of Light. Pritchard has plenty of time left this season to get back to his best and show that he can be a difference-maker at League One level, and potentially in the Championship if they can secure promotion to the second tier.

West Ham complete Nikola Vlasic signing

West Ham have officially completed the signing of Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow as David Moyes’ side make another late addition in the summer transfer window ahead of tonight’s deadline.

The Lowdown: Vlasic strongly linked with move

The Hammers have made a flying start to their Premier League campaign, playing some fine football and remaining undefeated so far.

They have been heavily linked with a late-summer move for Vlasic and a major development has now occurred regarding the deal.

The Latest: Done deal

On Tuesday morning, West Ham confirmed that the 23-year-old attacking midfielder is officially a Hammers player, completing his move from CSKA Moscow.

He has 26 caps to his name for Croatia, not to mention scoring 33 goals in 108 appearances for his previous club.

The Verdict: Another exciting addition

Following on from the weekend addition of Kurt Zouma, Vlasic could be another excellent signing in the final days of the summer transfer window, bringing even more quality in the final third.

His aforementioned goalscoring highlights his eye for goal, but he also provided 21 assists for CSKA Moscow, showing that he is also a creative force.

The hope is that Vlasic can take the Hammers up another level, dovetailing with the likes of Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma in terms of creativity while also possibly relieving the goalscoring burden on centre-forward Michail Antonio.

GSB may have been slow to bring in players for most of the summer, but the deals for Zouma and now Vlasic in recent days represent a strong end to the transfer window for West Ham.

In other news, some West Ham fans love one recent transfer update. Read more here.

Opportunity for Australia to reclaim top spot

Australia may have lost their No.1 ranking in ODIs to South Africa after their 39-run defeat in Perth, but they have an opportunity to reclaim that position when their five-ODI series against New Zealand gets underway

Cricinfo staff30-Jan-2009Australia may have lost their No.1 ranking in ODIs to South Africa after their 39-run defeat in Perth, but they have an opportunity to reclaim that position quickly when their five-match ODI series against New Zealand gets underway.South Africa went ahead by a fraction of a point after winning the series 4-1, but a victory in the first ODI against New Zealand in Perth, on Sunday, will be enough to push Australia to the top. Australia are still the top Test team, enjoying a five-point lead over South Africa despite losing the Test series 2-1 this summer.South Africa are back at the top for the first time since April 2008 and held the position for a brief period. The gap between the top three sides is steadily narrowing, with India also in the picture. They are currently five points behind South Africa and Australia in the ODI rankings and a series victory against Sri Lanka will push them further towards the top.Meanwhile, Zimbabwe have also made progress, moving up one place to tenth after winning the opening two matches of the five-ODI series in Kenya.

Leeds must finally unleash Adam Forshaw

After seeing the summer transfer window shut on Tuesday night, Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa will be glad to have gotten one final signing over the line in the shape of Manchester United’s Dan James.

But, one area in which the Whites failed to strengthen is in central midfield, with a move for Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien seemingly falling on its head.

In response to a question from a fan about whether the Whites would pursue a late move for the midfielder on transfer deadline day, The Athletic’s Phil Hay said on Twitter: “Not a matter of time. They’re not stretching to £8m+ for O’Brien.”

While Leeds may have baulked against paying that kind of fee for O’Brien, they may take some comfort in the return from injury of Adam Forshaw.

The midfielder has endured a difficult spell at Leeds for well over a year now, with injuries seeing him miss the entire Premier League season – in fact, his only appearance of 2020/21 came at Premier League 2 level when he was given a runout against Aston Villa’s under-23s back in mid-April.

Speaking towards the end of last season, Bielsa himself said of the 29-year-old: “He has basically been not playing for two seasons and to be able to play 90 minutes at a high competition after being healthy – there is still a while to go before you’re ready for that.

“He’s healthy, and has two months left of the season to prove that he is finally over his issues. We all hope it will be like this, because he is a very important player and he has made a massive effort to overcome the situation that he’s been through.”

With Leeds lacking natural cover for Kalvin Phillips, and a new central midfielder not arriving through the door, Forshaw’s comeback from injury is a timely one.

Writing for The Athletic, Phil Hay backed Forshaw to enjoy a redemption season this year, saying: “Can his body hold up? Could he adapt quickly to the pace of the Premier League? The thing about Forshaw is that he is one of Bielsa’s favourite players at Leeds; someone who Bielsa has genuinely been heard to describe privately as having the right attributes for a Champions League side.”

The £60k-a-week earning midfielder has been dubbed as “class” by former Leeds man Noel Whelan, while Bielsa himself has previously admitted just how influential he can be.

He said: “Forshaw is a player who, when he has played, he is always between the better players of the team.

“He has a feature that is very difficult to get. He defends similar to Kalvin, he attacks similar to Klich. What he does close to Phillips doesn’t impede, it is not a problem for him when he goes close to Klich to attack. You are not going to find a lot of players with this kind of characteristic.”

That is high praise indeed from Bielsa, and he will be hoping that this campaign could be the making of the 29-year-old at the top level.

Now that O’Brien isn’t here and the transfer window has closed, it’s finally time for Bielsa to unleash Forshaw in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay dropped a Leeds United update on deadline day…
